Keith’s Bit.
At our April meeting we were happy to welcome
Joyce Marriott and her fateful friend Rory to tell us
about the work of The Stokenchurch Dog Rescue,
our chosen charity for 2008.
Hannah and her staff at The Gate looked after us
very well and we enjoyed a very good meal. The
cars and occupants were suitably attired and with
red and white flags we were very patriotic. After
lunch and a photo call, Arthur led us on a scenic
drive through Princess Risborough, Lane End and
Marlow, then back to his home for a cup of tea.
Along the way Arthur took us on a tour of difficult
down hill bends, the type that are only too common
in the Chilterns, and that the Midget was designed
for.
WAMGOC members turned out in force to enjoy
the Inter Regional event at Cricket St. Thomas,
twenty nine in all attended the weekend and
enjoyed programme that Tim Hipwell and his team
put on for us. The sun shone for us most of the time
and top down motoring was enjoyed by some of us
throughout a large part of the weekend.
Rory and companions.
We learnt about how that with our help they are
continuing to improve their facilities. They are
looking for £300,000 to rebuild their old kennels so
that they can help even more dogs. Let’s see if we
can help them get nearer their target by booking a
place on the Octagonal Run to Blenheim Palace on
Sunday 17 th August.
Our ‘Drive It Day/ St George’s Day’ lunch run,
took place on Sunday 20 th of April.
WAMGOC basking in the sun.
Apart from the two runs to Cheddar and Forde
Abbey, there were many things to keep everyone
occupied at Warners, archery, clay-pigeon shooting,
riffle shooting, boules plus welly wanging
competitions, along with the wild life park, grounds
and gardens to explore.
The highlight of the weekend was the Gala dinner
on the Sunday night, when we all had a chance to
dress up in our best for a final meal together.
Royal Windsor MG Heritage Festival 2009.
Just an advance note about a great MG event that is
going to take place next April. The Rotary Club of
Windsor and Eton with the MGOC are arranging a
Royal Review in the quadrangle of Windsor Castle
for 300 of the best cars of the marque to cover all
models and variants. The owners of these cars will
contribute £75 to The Prince Philip Trust Found,
which provides funds to local children’s charities’.
Then these cars will be parked up on the Frogmore
Parade Ground for viewing by the public who will
pay to see the show. In addition to this 80-90 mile
multi start road runs will arrive at and be parked up
along the ‘Long Walk’ up towards the Copper
Horse. These runs will cost between £25 / £35, this
price will include tulip route book, rally board, MG
Festival grille badge, souvenir programme and
entry to Frogmore Parade Ground.
We as a local Area club will be asked to help for an
hour or so with the marshalling on the ‘Long Work’
and at Frogmore at some point in the day.
Please look out for more details over the next few
months.
Another ethnic joke from Jackie and Trevor.
(Thanks, Ed.)
A Scotsman phones a dentist to enquire about
the cost for a tooth extraction.
£85 for an extraction, sir' the dentist replied.
£85!!! Huv ye no'got anythin' cheaper?'
That's the normal charge,' said the dentist .
'Whit aboot if ye didnae use any anesthetic?'
'That's unusual, sir, but I could do it and knock
£15 off.
'Whit aboot if ye used one of your dentist
trainees and still without
an anaesthetic?'
'I can't guarantee their professionalism and it'll
be painful. But the
price could drop to £40'.
'How aboot if ye make it a trainin' session, ave
It'll be good for the students, mulled the dentist.
'I'll charge you
£5. But it's going to be very traumatic.'
'Och, now yer talkin' laddie! It's a deal,' said the
Scotsman. 'Can ye
confirm an appointment for the wife next
Tuesday then?'
THE FULL MOON, LITTLE KINGSHILL
The Full Moon at Little Kingshill was awarded the
Pub of the Year 2007/2008 award, and on the
Midget’s list to visit. We were surprised to find
that the restaurant was fully booked and we were
told that it was important for us to book whatever
the day of the week. Obviously, this is a very
popular old English pub, and we will look forward
to making a booking and a further visit in the weeks
to come.
SPRIG IS HERE!
With the daffodils in full flower and the primroses
heralding the Spring, the Gourmet Midget decided
on a trip back over “Memory Lane” for lunch.
This time, it was a run to Stokenchurch, and the
King’s Arms, which certainly brought back many
memories as it was 46 years ago, when he got
married and enjoyed a splendid wedding reception
at the King’s Arms. This certainly was a very
special day and it would be interesting to find how
things had changed.
The first change we found was that the inside had
been completely refurbished and redecorated. It
was now under Indian ownership, although the
menu had retained a number of typical English
dishes. The Midget and his wife both chose to have
the beer-battered cod together with some “healthy”
chips, washed down by a very acceptable red non-
French wine. This was to be followed by a sponge
pudding and a large portion of clotted cream.
The cost of the meal was a reasonable £15 a head
and the car parking at the King’s Arms is ample and
very easy.
THE GOURMET MIDGET
Informal Gathering
April and dodging the showers, 13 members met at
the Crown at Burnham. Several of our “usual
diners” were in Ireland finding out about the 40
shades of green, so numbers were down. The pub
was somewhat quieter than our last meeting there,
so Stan could have turned up late and still been
comfortably part of our group. Lunch was good and
cheap, and the service was excellent.
This pub has important memories for WAMGOC,
as they held their first major event, a “car show” in
the field to the rear of the pub, about 15 years ago.
For those members who have not joined the club on
one of these meetings let me explain the format.
Pick a nice pub with good food, and a pleasant run
to the pub, and invite all members to come to that
pub at a certain time, usually lunch time, on a
certain day, Saturday or Sunday. It’s then up to you
to find the best route and join the others at the pub.
Historically 10 – 30 members turn up. As the title
suggests informality is the key. Put these dates in
your diary and come along.
Don't say you're English
Sent by Jannet.
and how you were all fascinated by who was under
the tonneau, well here he is –
From the Queen's Royal Lancer's Website:
Goodbye to my England, So long my old friend
Your days are numbered, being brought to an end
To be Scottish, Irish or Welsh that's fine
But don't say you're English, that's way out of line.
The French and the Germans may call themselves such
May orwegians, the Swedes and the Dutch
You can say you are Russian or maybe a Dane
But don't say you're English ever again.
At Broadcasting House the word is taboo
In Brussels its Scrapped, in Parliament too
Even schools are affected, staff do as they're told
They must not teach children about England of old.
Writers like Shakespeare, Milton and Shaw
The pupils do not learn about them anymore
How about Agincourt, Hastings , Arnhem or Mons
When England lost hosts of her very brave sons.
We are not Europeans, how can we be?
Europe is miles away over the sea
We're the English from England, let's all be proud
Stand up and be counted- Shout it out loud.
Let's tell our Government and Brussels too
We're proud of our heritage and the Red, White and Blue
Fly the flag of Saint George or the Union Jack
Let the world know - we want OUR EGLAD BACK!!
While I’m disappointed it wasn’t Carla Bruni, I’m
sure the ladies will be suitably impressed with
Elbourne Jr.
A note from the Treasurer.
I’m sure that you will be pleased to know that the
bookstall has been doing a fantastic trade and I was
able to bank £50.towards our charity donation to the
Stokenchurch Dog Rescue. Well done and many
thanks to The Elbournes. After last month’s
meeting a “clear out” of the books was undertaken
and these were then donated in turn to the
Scannappeal Bookshop at Amersham Hospital –
Comments from the Bookshop were – very many
thanks and these were just the type of books that
sell well on their stall. I’m sure that you are aware
that Scannappeal hold various fund raising events
at a variety of locations in our area - to find out
more log on to www.scannappeal.org.uk. Ang
