Helen Bellette - Organiser
Helen has returned to the RTBU fold as an Organiser after spending
the past 5 years with the Transport Workers Union as an Organiser /
Campaigner. Prior to that, Helen was a Tranist officer for 5.5 years and
was a delegate on the Operations Committee and various other union
positions.
In her time with the TWU, Helen unionised non-union sites, and
was actively involved in the safe rates campaign and paid waiting
time at the Port Botany area. Her work also included representing
members in the NSW Commission – predominantly owner drivers
for underpayments and Federal Commission under Workchoices and
FWA, and co-ordinated various actions such as the convoy to Canberra.
During that time, Helen traveled to Los Angeles to learn from the
Teamsters and Longshoreman for 2 weeks.
On her return, she then moved to the Federal office for a year
and worked exclusively on Safe Rates until the bill was tabled in
parliament in November. Organised about 1500+ long distance truck
drivers (employees and owner drivers) nationally. Also organised
numerous lobby trips to Canberra with members and one included a road trip that covered 3000 kms with a
truck and activist. This included over 100 media hits in regional and some national media.
Helen is a single mother of 3 boys, and said that “coming back to the RTBU was like coming home and I am
very grateful for the opportunity”. Helen’s expertise and experience will be put to good use on the Transit
Campaign and other organizing and campaigning work in the Branch.
