RTBU Train Guards Update The RTBU Train Guards membership has been involved in a number of industrial issues with RailCorp and some of these issues are ongoing. RailCorp Management Forced into Back Down over Injuries and Relinquished Shifts RailCorp attempted to bring in a new process for the management of relinquishing shifts without any consultation which is a breach of the 2005 EBA. When the RTBU guards and driver members became aware of this failure to consult as required under the EA members placed the matter into dispute. As a result of the good work of RTBU members RailCorp was forced to back down and are consulting with Guard and Driver delegates on the new management process as required under the EA. Lack of Meal Room Facilities The decentralisation of train crew from Central and more relief points at outer depots has created overcrowding in outer depot meal rooms. RTBU guard and driver delegates have been working together to address this issue. RailCorp Management were advised of the possibility of overcrowding well before the new timetable was implemented yet they have done nothing to ensure the availability of adequate meal room facilities for train crewing. The RTBU is advising all train crew who are unable to find space in a meal room to have their meals should advise TCAC of the overcrowding at the location and if directed, go to another location or wait until a space becomes available to start your crib. Members are requested to advise their local delegate and Management of the lack of adequate facilities. RailCorp Forced to Adhere to EA Consultation Guidelines Over Driver Traineeship RTBU driver trainee members in the driver training phase at Petersham or were about to enter this phase were recently advised by RailCorp that they would have to stay in the Guard’s phase of the traineeship due to guard shortages for the new timetable. Again, RailCorp management, who obviously do not have copies of the EA at their disposal, again did not consult on the issue. RTBU guard and driver members organised an urgent meeting with the RailCorp CEO. RTBU delegates demonstrated there were no guard shortages and they were able to ensure our Driver Trainee members were not disadvantaged by having their training interrupted. This was another great win on the ground by RTBU guard and driver members. Assaults on Guards The number of assaults on guards is still an ongoing concern and RailCorp are not doing enough to protect our members. The RTBU Guards Division is encouraging all guards to submit security incident reports whenever they are involved in any type of incident of assault, abuse or anti social behaviour by members of the public. Make sure you also advise your local delegates as we need to have as much information as possible to force RailCorp to provide better training for our members and more security on the network. Guard Trainer Issues The guard trainers have been trying to negotiate a 2% pay increase due to them from the 2001 Functional Agreement. This finally went to the Australian Industrial Relations Commission where both RailCorp and the Guard Trainers Committee agreed resolve the dispute in the Train Guards Functional talks. Train Guards Functional Talks Functional discussions between the Train Guards Sub-Division and RailCorp started on 11th October 2005. The delegates attending these talks are Geoff Quinn, Brian Ready, Paul Collimore, George Tsirkas, Pat O’Shea and Eric Glasson. Members should talk to their local delegates or one of the Committee if they have issue they would like put on the agenda. New Years Eve Members would be aware New Years Eve falls on a Saturday this year and as with every previous year, there is a dispute between guards and Management. After last year’s dispute RailCorp agreed to discuss a special events clause in the Functional Agreement but now management has said there is no need for an agreement. If RailCorp are not willing to negotiate an agreement with guards for special events then guards should claim their book off days as they are entitled to do. 20 Rail and Road - August/October 2005
Good afternoon Nick and Staff, I am writing to advise of my resignation from ARU/PTU & RTBU to take place as of29/7/05. It is unfortunate that this must happen.. Having lost my position within the Rail Industry on4/9/04 upon the ARTC takeover I was placed into a Careers Transition Centre to Job Search. After applying for several jobs I continued with Job Search and Retraining.. It is now official that as of Friday 29/7/05 I am now an employee of The Department of Education and Training.I was recommended for appointment to the DET Finance Directorate Bathurst Accounts Payable position. Career Path change at 51 years of age. My last day with RIC was28/7/05. I will miss the real rail friends I had and the broader rail workings. I met many associates through the railways..I needed an income and VR wouldn’t get me through as I never scaled great heights within the railways and was displaced as a Clerk Grade 2 or Admin Officer/Assistant. I’m not able to sit back and say that I left on a Senior Manager or Managers packet to come and go as I please in Life after Rail. The friendship and events over my 34 years as a rail employee is valued and many memories will live on. Some people will be glad to see the back of me (guess they won’t even see the front now) but I stood my ground and fought for what was right. Workplace employee’s rights and the truth. This all came about by becoming involved with the Union movement upon the request of Mr Lyle Orreal from Bathurst Sub Branch back in my Trackfast Freight days when Lyle was an ASM in Traffic/Operations Branch. I could write a long storyon my movements since starting as a Junior Clerk at Bathurst Booking Office in March 1971, progressing to Bathurst Goods Yard / Trackfast Freight then to Workshops Division and finally across to DE Bathurst (Track Maintenance Engineer’s Office) where I was put to rest (like many) by the result of the ARTC takeover - but I wouldn’t want to put you to sleep. Have not seen much Union Bulletins since my last days at the “Old Office”. But what I did see I must commend the Unions in getting the word out. The Rail & Road from RTBU and the old TransNews from ATOF/ASU I enjoyed reading whenever I saw them laying about loose. Do hope we all meet again somewhere in this wide, wondrous & illustrious world.
