fine hand colouring, on Whatman paper dated 1811. 295 x<br />
435mm Paper toned. At this time Berlin was the capital of<br />
Prussia. <strong>The</strong> seat of the electors of Brandenburg (after<br />
1701, kings of Prussia) from 1486, Berlin suffered from<br />
the Thirty Years War (1618-48), but the reign of<br />
Frederick William (1640-88), the Great Elector, restored<br />
and improved the city. Occupied in the Seven Years War<br />
by Austrian (1757) and Russian (1760) troops and in the<br />
Napoleonic Wars by the French (1806-8), Berlin emerged<br />
from the conflicts as a center of German Culture, rivaling<br />
Vienna.<br />

various artists (largest 260 x 330mm, smallest 235 x<br />
190mm) bound to style into red morocco binding, oblong<br />
folio (300 x 410mm). Binding scuffed and rubbed; damage<br />
to spine. Plates generally good: strong impressions some<br />
with relatively light foxing/staining. Dresden is the capital<br />
city of the German Federal Free State of Saxony. It is<br />
situated in a valley on the River Elbe.<br />

[Painted by Lieut. J. Corbett, R.N.] Watercolour. Sheet<br />
160 x 235mm. Lieutenant John Corbett served with the<br />
Royal Navy from the late 1830s to the 1870s, travelling in<br />
the Mediterranean, Africa & the Far East. In 1851, serving<br />
on the "Penelope", he took part in the storming of Lagos<br />
under heavy fire, spiking the guns of the fort, making<br />
Lagos a British Province.<br />
He was Commander of HMS "Inflexible" during the<br />
Second Opium War (1856-60), which, in 1857, towed the<br />
gun-boat "Starling" 10,000 miles to Hong Kong after it<br />
was damaged in a storm.<br />
