Over The Top – Summer 2013 5

From the President’s Pen
This year has been a challenging one
for the Sub Branch Committee. Firstly
there were no nominations for either
the President nor for the Secretary’s
positions. As a result as the previous Vice
President, I have been fulfilling this role
and the 2012 AGM agreed that if there
no suitable volunteers, the Manager
would be appointed to carry out the
duties of secretary and consequently
has been our Secretary/Manager during
2012. The committee accepted the
services of one volunteer to become
secretary but unfortunately he contracted
health problems and had to withdraw
his offer. Nevertheless, the Committee
has functioned effectively and I believe
provided good direction in Sub Branch
operations during the year. My thanks to
the committee members and in particular
Mark Bremner for the work he has done in
drafting the strategic business plan with
Wayne.
Commemorations
The ANZAC and Remembrance Day
services were well attended and my
thanks go to all who volunteered to
ensure these commemorations were
successful. The cost of staging these
services including the associated
functions in the club was approximately
$14,000.
We are also grateful to the Maroondah
City Council who refurbished the
Ringwood Clock Tower, replaced the flag
poles, replaced the sound system, reset
and painted the howitzer in the Clock
Tower Memorial Park.
Welfare and
Charitable
Activities
The welfare and community support
work of the Sub Branch has continued
apace and during 2012:
• We have helped many veterans with
their claims for support from the
Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
• Provided over $9,000 of welfare
services for mobility aids as well as
minor house and garden maintenance
for a number of our more frail
members and also for others in our
community who need our help.
• Members also provided approximately
10,500 hours of volunteer support
to our members and ex-service
men and women in the Maroondah
area. These volunteer services have
included, assistance in claiming
pension entitlements, home and
hospital visits and the conduct of RSL
eulogies as part of the funeral service
for veterans. Apart from the welfare
benefit provided to individuals, the
value of this volunteer support to the
Maroondah community is in the order
of $210,000.
• Rob and his team of volunteers have
raised over $70,000 in the annual
ANZAC and Poppy Appeals for the
State RSL welfare work.
• We have provided bursaries and
assistance worth $1,500 for children in
local schools.
• Provided a donation of $1,000 for the
6 Over The Top – Summer 2013

purchase of safety equipment for the
local Air Force Cadet Unit.
• Provided sponsorship of $3,000 for
both the Maroondah Brass and the
Ringwood Pipe Bands.
• We have arranged a sponsorship deal
for our members with Le Pine Funerals
who now offer a $500 discount on their
services for all RSL members and their
families.
In addition we have continued to provide
support to members of the Sub Branch
with subsidised meals and refreshments,
sponsorship of sporting sub sections and
other “in club” activities designed to make
visits to the club more enjoyable.
Property Developments
November saw the completion of the
development of the six townhouses
behind the car park in James Street. We
have now sold the three we planned
to and the proceeds have covered
our construction costs. The remaining
three have been tenanted at current
market rate rents which will provide
an additional income stream for the
Sub Branch. Unfortunately, progress on
the redevelopment of the Sub Branch
premises has not progressed as we had
planned due the very tight financial
situation in the general community. All
our potential partners failed to attract the
necessary investment finance required
to allow the major redevelopment to be
authorised. As a result the Committee
has decided to scale back our proposal
with a less ambitious redevelopment
of the club facility to provide modern
amenities for an interim period while
we await an improvement in the overall
economy. We believe this scaled down
redevelopment will coincide with the
major works planned for the Eastland
Shopping Centre as well as the upgrade
of Ringwood station and that we will
achieve an increase in patronage from the
community which will help us sustain our
welfare efforts.
Trading
This year has also been a challenging one
for our commercial trading operations.
Without stealing the Secretary/Manager’s
thunder, I can report that the changeover
of the gaming arrangements has been
successful although there have been
many teething problems with the new
services provider as well as the new
gaming regulator. We have been able
to meet our obligations to pay the
instalments for the new licences for our
gaming machines and we have been
trading at an overall profit. I offer my
sincere thanks to Wayne and his staff
who have worked hard during the year in
support of members and for successfully
navigating their way through the gaming
regime changeover.
Veteran and ADF Member
Support Policies
On the national front, I have been
working to encourage all national exservice
organisations (ESOs) to cooperate
more closely so that the voice of the
ex-service community can be more
unified and effective in submissions
and proposals to governments. We are
8 Over The Top – Summer 2013

From the President’s Pen continued
making progress in this with just about
all ESOs agreeing on the most important
policy issues we would like the Federal
Government to act on. Some of the major
issues we are pursuing are:
• The adoption of an “Australian Military
Covenant” in 2015 to recognise the
contribution made by service men and
women to the nation since federation.
• Military superannuation – fair
adjustment of superannuation
pensions to stop the decline in their
value; the use of up to date “life
expectancy” tables rather than 50
year out of date ones to calculate
repayment of commuted pension
amounts; removal of “maximum
benefit limits” for members of the
current military scheme; extension of
superannuation to all reserve members
of the ADF; and removal of income
tax from Military Superannuation
Pensions in line with the tax free
superannuation benefits allowed most
other Australians.
• Increase to the DVA Disability Pension
amount to match the increase given to
the Age Pension in 2009.
• Preservation of privacy of the personal
records of our service men and women
in the “open access” period which is
being advanced to 20 years from the
existing 30 years.
• We remain opposed to the
Government proposal to form a
“Military Court” to replace the existing
Court Martial system.
• Increased recognition of the effects on
ADF members of exposure to fuel and
other toxic substances in line with the
support given to F111 maintenance
workers.
In addition to these, we are closely
monitoring the new “outsourced”
medical care arrangements for ADF
members with the objective that all
arrangements have the support of
the relevant medical professional
associations, that the quality of
services to ADF members will not
be diminished, and that there are
mechanisms in place to monitor the
effectiveness of the arrangements in
relation to the quality and timeliness
of service provision. We have also
managed to get the Government to
reverse its decision to abolish the
recreational leave travel entitlement
for ADF members over the age of 21.
If this initiative had been allowed to
remain it would have impacted most
severely on members in separated
families where their former spouse had
custody of their children and they were
making maintenance payments.
Thanks
Once again let me thank all the hard
working volunteers who contribute so
much to the life of our Sub Branch. I
would also like to thank members for the
support and encouragement you have
given me in 2012 and wish everyone a
happy and healthy 2013.
David Jamison
Over The Top – Summer 2013 9

Manager/Secretary’s Report
Dear members,
I hope you all had a memorable
Christmas and a joyful New Years Eve; we
were booked out again this year for both
occasions.
2012 has been a very busy and frustrating
year with the changes to gaming. The
loss of our ATM has caused confusion for
members and visitors and has increased
the workload on the staff supplying
money through EFTPOS. The changeover
to Intralot Gaming Solutions (Gaming
Monitoring) has been the biggest
challenge. Although they are a world
renowned monitoring company for
gaming, they are new to Victoria and
have had a steep learning curve at our
expense. Intralot does not have the same
urgency in getting pokies operational,
so our pokies are sometimes down for
long periods of time. Remember, this is
a company that won a tender to monitor
gaming machines in Victoria for the State
Government, they get paid by us whether
the pokies are operating or not. There
has been a long delay for Ringwood RSL
to get new pokies. We were due for our
first deployment of six new machines on
22 nd October 2012 but this was cancelled
due to being too close to changeover
from Tatt’s to Intralot, because it was
cancelled we had to re-apply to get a
new date and this is a 28 day process.
Although we applied straight away we
still have no new pokies as I write this
report. Constant communication with
Intralot, VCGRL and the State Government
has been to no avail. Intralot is still
focused on changing
over every gaming
venue in the state
before putting priority
on pokier machine deployments. Intralot
has a contract with the Government to
have all venues changed over by the start
on March 2013 or they will be penalised;
this has been very frustrating when we
have Tabcorp Gaming Solutions with
27 new poker machines earmarked for
Ringwood RSL.
In 2013 with the success of the FREE live
entertainment on the third Saturday of
each month introduced last year, we have
expanded the entertainment to include
the first Friday as well, please check our
notice boards, web page or our new
phone App to keep yourself up to date on
who is coming up next. If you don’t have
our new app yet (the only RSL in Victoria
to have one) go to the Google Play store
or Apple’s app store and down load it
FREE and have mobile flexibility and
convenience.
If you are a fight fan you will love
watching the UFC fights in the function
room each month on our 140” projection
screen, it’s like being at the fight. The
show starts from 12 noon to 5pm and
don’t miss out on our exclusive Pot &
Parma Meal Deal for just $10.00.
RSL Rewards has now started. Don’t
forget to swipe your member’s card
on entry to the club to receive bonus
visitation points or win a random prize.
10 Over The Top – Summer 2013

You will also receive points for every
dollar spent at the club on food, drinks
and merchandise. When entering the
club on your birthday and you swipe
your member’s card, you will receive a
FREE drink and meal voucher. As you
accumulate points you will be able to
redeem them back or pay part off your
food and drink bill. These points can be
earned or redeemed at any participating
RSL throughout Victoria. During the year
there will be RSL Rewards members only
promotions, so look out for them in the
coming months.
We have traded better this year than last
year and I anticipate it will continue to
grow, but at a slow pace, until the overall
confidence comes back in our economy
in Australia.
Thank you members for your support of
the Ringwood RSL “Your Local Club” and
have a great 2013 and to the Committee
(especially David Jamison and Mark
Bremner) and the staff of the RSL, thank
you for all your support and hard work
over the past year.
Wayne Chisholm
Dear Members,
Did you know that if your relatives wanted to join the Ringwood R & SL
they can? They can join as an Affiliate Member or if you have friends that
would like to join, they can join as a Social Member.
We are looking to increase our Membership and have more people
interested in our Sub Branch. So if you know anyone who is interested,
then advise them to call the club and enquire about our facilities and
benefits of being a Social Member.
Treasurer’s Report
As the Treasurer can report to the
members that trading overall for the
calendar year 2012 was both better than the
previous year and better than the Manager’s
budget for the year though the second half
of the year trade was not to the level that we
were budgeting for.
It might be opportune to touch on some
the individual trading areas to gauge the
Manager’s, the Committee’s and the Club’s
performance between 2012 and 2011:
2012 2011 Change
Net Result $196,338 ($48,170) Up by $244,508
Bar Sales $843,557 $789,135 Up by $54,422
Bar Cost of $293,860 $268,930 Up by $24,930
Goods Sold
Food Sales $648,818 $805,770 Down by $156,952
Food Purchases $262,927 $281,360 Down by $18,433
(Net) Gaming $1,935,826 $1,157,730 Up by $778,096
Please note that these figures have been
produced prior to the annual audit and may
be subject to change as a result of the audit.
As can be seen from the figures above, we
have traded significantly better in 2012 than
we did in 2011, with a turnaround in the net
result of $244,500 - from a 2011 deficit of
$48,170 to a surplus in 2012 of $196,338.
Analysing at the figures closer we see that a
good positive result was made in the areas of
the Bar and Gaming Income, but of concern
is the downturn in trade in the Bistro. Gaming
has seen an increase over the previous year,
but having said that, the Club was denied its
due quota of new machines due with the first
deployment in October 2012 which would
have had a detrimental effect on the ‘bottom
line’.
The change in the taxation arrangement
brought about by the new Gaming regime
that came into effect in 2012, and assisted
in the good result,
it is envisaged
that further
improvements will
be made during the year 2013.
During the year the Club lost the services
of one of its long time Administration
personnel in Helen Norton. Helen’s
position was outsourced to an Accounting
firm. With a new firm, with the complexities
of bookkeeping incorporated in a gaming
venue and newly introduced software,
there have been some teething problems
throughout their tenure; but these
difficulties shall be minimalised as their
familiarity with the Club’s requirements are
enhanced .
In the Military, it was drummed into us
that anything is ‘only as good as its weakest
link’. We, all the Committee and the
Club’s members, can be thankful for the
outstanding level of competence, loyalty
and dedication displayed by all staff to the
Club whether Administration, Gaming, Bar
or Bistro, and for that I thank them.
Finally my heartfelt thanks go to the
Manager and Secretary, Mr Wayne
Chisholm. Throughout the time that I have
been Treasurer for the Ringwood RSL Sub-
Branch I have been continually amazed
with his knowledge of the hospitality
industry, the manner in which he goes
about the performance of his dual roles, his
willingness to assist staff in the furtherance
of their knowledge, and the additional
time ‘above and beyond’ dedicated to
sub-committees of ANZAC House in
developing the brand RSL.
Women’s Auxiliary Report
hope Christmas 2012 was enjoyed my
I all and all are now looking forward to a
happy, healthy and safe 2013.
The women’s auxiliary meet on the first
Wednesday of the month at 11am.
Sad to say our members are dropping, due
mainly to health and age etc.
We now have Mrs. Nell Burns in a Nursing
Home, also Mrs. Dorothy Whitehead; both
of these ladies are Life Members. Mrs. Louisa
Enright has recently gone into care. Doris
Blokkeerus also a life member has had some
time in hospital and respite, thankfully is
now home, we hope to see more of her this
year.
Mrs. Betty Tarr suffered a heart attack and
spent quite a while in hospital, she is now
recuperating at the daughter’s home and
hopes to return to Bingo by the end of the
month.
Sorry to report Ms. Ethel McLear after a long
illness passed away in April, some of our
ladies attended the funeral service.
Also Mrs. Norma Murray passed away, she
was remembered for being Treasurer for a
short time, she also ran regular Police Trips,
which were very successful.
In July 23 people lunched at Natalie’s
Restaurant, and enjoyed Christmas in July –
a pleasant day was had by all.
Our Easter and Christmas Hampers Special
Effort (Raffle) were both very successful. The
attractive hampers were, as usual, the best!
Thank-you to all who donated goods for the
hampers.
On Sunday 11 th November, members
of the Women’s Auxiliary were present
at the Clocktower for a short service for
Remembrance Day; the weather was kind
to us, a beautiful day for the many people
who attended. A wreath from The Women’s
Auxiliary was placed with many others out
of respect.
On the 7 th of November the market people,
known as “All the Rage” set up their goods
for sale, good variety and useful giftware,
we were pleased with the result as we were
given quite a few goods which were used in
our hampers.
On Wednesday 5 th of December, The
Women’s Auxiliary enjoyed their Christmas
Luncheon, which was help in our RSL
Function Room.
Margaret from the Bistro, did a really great
job of setting up the tables and a big thank
you to her as it was a really classy effort.
We enjoyed some fun, good food, and some
Christmas Cheer.
We were also fortunate in having our Sub
Branch President – Colonel David Jamison
AM and our Welfare Officer – Ms Kyme Ryan,
as our guests.
David gave a brief talk regarding the
running of the RSL and how much he
enjoyed being at out luncheon; Kyme is
always happy to give help, she is in her office
Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Two of our long serving ladies were
celebrating their 90 th Birthdays just a
week apart. Mrs. Liz Wells, who had been
President of The Women’s Auxiliary for
more than 20 years and Mrs. Ellen Eade had
been Secretary for many years as well. Both
of these ladies are still very active and are
happy to help at any time, we have to say
“Well Done”.
I would now like to thank all who have given
their support over the past year, no matter
how small, it is very welcome!
Welfare & Charitable Report
2012 the year that was.
After a changing of the guard and a rename,
the Ringwood RSL Welfare and
Resource Office has been busy as ever.
With 132 clients currently on the books,
who are contacted on a regular basis
to check on their welfare, this doesn’t
include the numerous daily phone call
enquires, there is never a dull moment as
a lot of work is generated from these calls.
Welfare Patriotic funds have been
accessed to assist a member in obtaining
an electric scooter due to declining
health, financial assistance to help reduce
debt for a member, and the purchase of
a paediatric wheel chair for a member’s
grandchild who is fighting cancer.
A regular newsletter page dedicated
to Welfare which provides information,
updates and articles every month.
Veteran Assistance Program which offers
assistance with a range of veteran related
issues.
Linking isolated veterans and war widows
into other organisations who offer
support services, for example Wesley Do
Care Telelink Program.
The Welfare and Resource Office has
also established a working relationship
with The Ringwood Private Hospital who
offers health professionals who specialise
in their field to attend the Ringwood
RSL to give presentations to the War
Widows and Ladies Auxiliary groups on a
range of topics. These specialists include
orthopaedic surgeons, cardiologist, and
gynaecologists.
PACE Strengthening and Mobility
classes are now here at the Ringwood
RSL. The classes are run every Tuesday
morning at 10.00 am for 45 minutes by
qualified physiologists. This has been
a great success. There is a lot of fun,
laughter and socialising. The class has
only been running since October and
the participants have noticed great
improvement especially with their
mobility/balance. We are looking for
more members to start a second group,
so if you are over 65 hold a DVA Gold/
White card please drop by the Welfare
and Resource Office for more details and
come and join the fun.
The Welfare and Resource Office
volunteers have been quite busy over the
last 12 months. Just some of the fantastic
work they do needs a mention.
• 1019 veterans and war widows were
visited in hospital regardless whether
members of the Ringwood RSL or not
(The Ringwood RSL is the only RSL that
visits the Maroondah Public, Ringwood
and Know Private Hospitals on a
weekly basis)
• 107 nursing home residents visited
• 30 home visits with isolated veterans
and war widows
• and of course attending funerals
Bingo Report
A big thank you to Judy Mays, Fred
Bottrell, Maurice (Blackie) Blackwell,
Len Polkinghorne, Jack Westhorp, Mark
Manelski and Shirley Tipple.
Christmas parcels were delivered once
again this year. This year was the first
year something different was tried. Small
hampers of toiletry items for both men
and women were hand delivered to 41
veterans and war widows in nursing
homes/aged care facilities. These were
greatly received and appreciated. One
comment made from a war widow was
“This gift is so thoughtful as I can no
longer go and buy body wash, nice body
spray or powder for myself any more
these days and with no family I have to
use the horrible stuff they have here”. The
isolated veterans/war widows that still
reside at home were presented with a
small food hamper filled with Christmas
goodies which were also greatly
appreciated.
So that was the year that was. This was
just some of the amazing work carried
out during the year.
Kyme Ryan
Welfare Coordinator
2012 has not been our best year,
numbers down, which means prize
money is also down. We hope our regular
players return, which will make everyone
happy. We have a good Trade Table which
brings in good dollars.
We also have a weekly Special Effort
(Raffle) consisting of 3 prizes – meat
tray, biscuits and chocolates, and a
food or drink voucher. This brings in
approximately $100.00 each week.
We have our Bingo game every Thursday,
1 st session at 1pm and second session at
2pm. These are run by our volunteers.
We have 3 Special Efforts, being Easter,
Mother’s Day and Christmas. Each of
these have a very attractive hamper as
the prize – we hope this year will be as
successful as past years.
I would like to “thank” all of our workers,
very special people, always there every
week to help, also, may I wish all a safe,
happy and healthy New Year.
Thank you,
Pension Office Report
The Pension Office will be closed until
the first Wednesday in February
(6 th Feb) to let the staff recharge their
batteries – the past few months have
been very busy and included the annual
DVA luncheon which for the first time was
attended by section leaders only, in the
past we have had the general staff attend,
but this time only the senior members
represented the Department. Some
valuable information was shared – and
reliable contacts made.
For the past 12 years this RSL has opened
the Pension Office on a Wednesday
only, with Committee approval we are
prepared to operate on a Thursday as
well. The past 13 years have seen me
appear at Noble Park RSL Pension office
each Thursday and for personal reasons
I have resigned my voluntary services at
that location and am prepared to ply the
trade twice weekly
at Ringwood – as are
most of the other
pension officers.
Some advice for those keen to apply for
the EDA above General Rate of pension
– it must be understood that if the
applicant can still drive a car, EDA rate
will be refused – this is all to do with the
Lifestyle Questionnaire scoring system.
We look forward to assisting our
brotherhood of veterans, War Widows
and Ex Service personnel who reside in
the Outer Eastern boroughs on and from
6 th February, 2013.
Until next issue – I leave you with my
standard dictum:
Special Events
Once again I would
like to give a very
special THANK YOU to
our fantastic drivers who
always say ‘yes’ when I ask
them to drive the buses on
these trips, i.e. Jan, Fred,
Phil (who has not been
very well lately) and a new
driver – Bruce.
Without these drivers
these bus trips would
never eventuate. They
volunteer their time and effort without
any hesitation.
The members who go on these bus trips,
thank you one and all, have donated
$10.00 each on each trip towards
Welfare.
Trips from July 2012 have been to the
following:
July
EPPING RSL $170.00
August
CARIBBEAN GARDENS & $150.00
DANDENONG MARKET
September
CRANBOURNE RSL $120.00
October
WERRIBEE MANSION & $220.00
YARRAVILLE CLUB
November
EMERALD LAKE
$150.00
(This was a Christmas picnic)
There are no trips in December and
January.
The amounts donated to Welfare may not
seem much to some people, but they do
add up and every bit helps when it comes
to helping Welfare.
The Women’s Auxiliary do a raffle on
each of these trips with great prizes. The
money raised through these raffles go to
the Women’s Auxiliary which in turn goes
towards Welfare. Thank you very much
Ellen Eade for your continuous running of
these raffles.
Once again, thank you to all the members
who take the time to go on these trips
and the fantastic and wonderful drivers
who don’t mind helping the RSL and
myself.
Please check out the notice board near
reception for the next bus trip.
Anglers’ Report
Our 2012 /13 angling season
commenced in October when a
group went on a week long trip to “The
Snowies” and fished Lake Eucumbeen for
trout. A few good size fish were caught
but not as many as previous years. Jeff
Aurisch caught the biggest trout and
won the trophy.
We hope to arrange another week long
comp around Easter.
A new trout fishery has been opened
at the old Devils Bend Dam, Melbourne
Water no longer uses this reservoir for
water distribution and over the years
thousands of trout have been released
into the dam making this an ideal day
trip for the angling section.
Our saltwater season got underway
on the 27th October with a trip into
Westernport with Reel Adventure
Charters, although the snapper was
sparse Terry McCormack won the trophy
for the first snapper for the season
Our trip into Port Philip Bay on
November 17 was the most prolific
snapper trip.
We welcomed aboard new angling
section members Dorian Turner and his
son, also Dorian.
Leaving Mornington at 5am we headed
north- west and fished in 22 metres of
water it wasn’t long before the snapper
was on, it was quite hectic with the sound
of the line being stripped off the reels
as the snapper made their runs, Dorian
Turner Snr caught the largest snapper of
over 4kg, the sub-section returned to port
at 10am with everyone having their legal
limit of three snapper.
Our trip on the December 15 th was far less
productive it seemed that the snapper
had just turned off.
Henry Simpson who was a life member
of the sub-section passed away on
December 13.
It is customary in our sub-section that we
would pay tribute to our late member,
at dawn. We held a brief service where
Henry’s name, service number, his
contribution to the Army, the RSL, and the
Angling Sub-Section was read out then
there was a minute’s silence followed by
each member placing a poppy on the
water.
Eight Ball Report
Billiards & Snooker Report
The Ringwood RSL 8-Ball Section hopes
you and your families enjoyed a
wonderful Christmas and the celebrations
to see in the New Year.
All 3 teams consistently played high
quality games and remained strongly
competitive throughout the Winter
2012 season. The Winter 2012 Season
concluded with our 3 rd Division team
making the finals but unfortunately they
were eliminated in the first round.
The Winter 2013 Season will commence
in March 2013 and we have entered 3
teams again. Whilst Divisions have not
been determined, we are confident of 1 st ,
2 nd and 3 rd Division.
We are a strong, solid and competitive
Club. We are always seeking to recruit
new players. If you are interested in
playing 8 Ball please contact reception for
more information.
Best wishes to you and your families for
2013.
Ringwood RSL 8 Ball Section Committee
Firstly, I would like
to wish all a very
Happy New Year from
all at the Billiards and
Snooker Sub Section, with a membership
of 22 for 2012 season, we are still
competitive but we just could not bring
home the goods, we still gave it a good try
and 2013 is another season, “bring it on”.
We were very saddened with the passing
of our Secretary Peder Kwok, it has
affected all who knew this very friendly
man.
We will also miss Peter and Jan Mudford
who moved away, good luck in the land of
“Oppy”. Peter has purchased himself a full
sized snooker table.
The “in house comps” last year were put
on hold with the deteriorating condition
of Peder, but we hope to get them up
again next year.
I am resigning my position on our
committee after 15 years, I am handing it
over to the younger players Sam Lilly and
Dale Bolton, I’m sure with the experience
they have it will be a breeze for them.
We picked up four new players… Michael
Lithgow, Antoine Osanz, David McIlfatrick
and Chris Marien, welcome to you all.
We welcome any new members who
wish to come into the Billiard room with
the idea of having a run with us, you
don’t have to be a great player (but that
would be handy) we will make you very
welcome.
Indoor Biased Bowls Report
Ringwood RSL entered two teams
Indoor in Bowls the Winter Team: Pennant L to R: Competition
???? conducted by the Eastern Suburban
Indoor Bias Bowls Association. Separate
Pennant competitions are conducted
on Tuesday Nights and Wednesday
afternoons in the months April to August.
Ringwood RSL had both teams playing on
Tuesday nights.
Team 1 – Division 2 Team 2 – Division 2
Barbara Elliott Bernard Bouchereau
Arthur Gibson Gay Dodkins
Lorraine McRae Gail Loidl
Paul Storey ( Skip ) Gunter Loidl
Julie Trembearth Margaret Poile
Lucas Protopapas (a junior)
Peter Robinson (Skip)
The Division 2 Competition was very
hard-fought and close with the top 4
teams all finishing with 9 wins and 5
loses on 18 points. Team 1 finished 6 th
on the ladder with 10 points and Team
2 managed to remain in 4 th place on 18
points and play in the Finals held at Glen
Waverley Bowls Club.
In the Semi-Finals on Tuesday, August 7,
Ringwood RSL defeated Blackburn RSL by
5 shots (28 to 23) in a great game where
the lead changed some 5 times.
The Grand Final was played the following
Tuesday night against a team from
Blackburn Bowls Club. This game was a
very low scoring game that had some
amazing shots being played. After a slow
start by the Ringwood RSL team, they
managed to fight their way back to tie the
score on 16 shots all after the 21 ends of
the game. A tie-break end then had to be
played to decide the Premiership which
Blackburn won by 2 shots in a very tight
Golf Report
Welcome to 2013. I hope you all
have an enjoyable year on the golf
course. By the time you read this, we will
have already played our first game which
was held at Garfield.
Last year our numbers were down slightly
due to the very wet winter.
We held our presentation day on the first
Sunday in December. A great day was had
by all whom attended, it was great to see
some old faces, Jack Emerson, John Roach
and Jack Westhorp in attendance.
Congratulations to Glen Carmody,
Stephen Steward and Gunther Loidl on
being made life members of the golf
section.
On the day we presented our major
trophy winners, they are as follows:
Congratulations to Greg Frost on being
Club Champion for 2012.
Singles Champion was Bill Clappers.
Doubles Champions John Poulter and
Peter Harvey.
Well done to all trophy winners.
Our Golf Section is very fortunate in
that we have some extremely generous
sponsors, without them our section
would not be able to give back to
our members, the outstanding social
functions etc.
The Sponsors are as
follows:
With gratitude:
• Regency Caravans
• Aussie Home Loans
support also of all players and the Friday
