ARTback – Sculptures of the Long Paddock
Stage 2 - A Tribute to Timber
Expression of Interest
The Long Paddock – Cobb Highway touring route is a tourism initiative of five councils,
Murray Shire, Deniliquin Shire, Conargo Shire, Hay Shire and Central Darling Shire. The
touring route covers 610 kms from Echuca-Moama in south western NSW to Wilcannia in
western NSW. The touring route was launched in October 2006 and has 47 interpretive
panels along the route that tell the story of the pioneers, drovers, shearers , transportation
and indigenous culture of the region. In 2009 The Long Paddock Committee (LPC) launch
ARTback - Sculptures of the Long Paddock, installing seven large scale public artworks along
the route. (for more information visit www.thelongpaddock.com.au).
The Long Paddock has recently received funding through the Riverina Red Gums Regional
Economic and Community Development Fund from the NSW Government to install four
additional public artworks in the Murray, Deniliquin and Conargo Shires. The funding is
aimed at developing the tourism industry within the shires. The sculptures will serve as a
tribute to the important contribution the timber industry made to the region.
This is an amazing opportunity to be involved with the world’s largest open air gallery. The
works, although produced by individual artists will be marketed as an entire collection,
adding to the success of the original seven artworks. The sculptures will be seen by
approximately 100 000 visitors each year across the length of the Long Paddock – Cobb
Highway Touring Route
The Long Paddock has produced an Artist Brief for the collection. Artists can respond to
either one site or all four sites. Artist will be required to address the criteria outlined in the
Artists Brief:
1. If artists choose to respond to one site only, they will be required to submit a full
application including sketches for that site.
2. If artists chose to respond to all four sites they will be required to submit a ONE full
application with sketches for all four sites. Artists do not need to submit four
applications if they are proposing to apply for all four sculpture sites.
The public artworks will need to reflect the contribution of the timber industry to the region.
The LPC has consulted with the communities of each shire and these themes are contained
as attachments to the Artistic Brief. The LPC would like the artworks to focus on the
progression of implements used in the felling and production of timber in the region and/or
the uses of timber felled in this region. This information is contained in the Artists Brief and
relevant attachments.
If artist choose to submit an application for all four sculptures the LP would expect the
sculptures to be a coherent collection.
Murray Shire (Moama)
Kerrabee Soundshell, Moama
$8 800 inc GST (please note this is the maximum budget and must include
all materials, artist fees and installation)
Moama is located on the Victorian boarder on the Murray River. It has a
population of 15000. The Kerrabee Soundshell is a well utilised community
and visitor area (park) on the banks of the Murray River. The area also
contains a sound shell (performance area), a band rotunda and war
memorial. Each weekend, farmers markets are held at the site. The area has
a parking bay and is also accessible by pedestrian traffic from Echuca.
This sculpture will be smaller in scale than the other three sites and will be
used as a “teaser” to the remaining collection. It is hoped that this sculpture
will encourage users to travel further north along the touring route to see
the remaining sculptures.
sculpture will be located at the Mathoura Visitor Information and Business
Centre (an existing Long Paddock visitor site). The site will be located on the
toilet block and picnic furniture. There are a number of river red gum trees
growing in the area.
Mathoura was the centre of the timber industry within the region. The
closure of the timber industry has had a significant effect on the local
population. The sculpture will need to reflect the connection of the
community to the timber industry and its importance to the township. The
sculpture is seen as a compensation for the loss of the industry.
