The Challenge
Integrated oil and gas companies, land and offshore drilling contractors,
crew boats and vessel operators all share a common problem: high
dollar value capital assets operating under extreme conditions, in remote
locations and frequently move from rig, to production locations, boat or
vessel to docks, yards or service company locations and back. Up to
date and instant availability of information incorporating historic records,
documentation, modifications track and regulatory compliance has
historically been a labor intensive, time consuming and challenging task.
Maximize asset reliability and performance
RigMS Asset management system is the only equipment asset
management system designed and developed with the demands of the
oil and gas industry in mind. RigMS introduces the continuous process
Manage critical performance requirements of Risers
Deepwater drilling contractors have a very significant
investment in riser assets and these assets have to perform
without failures. RigMS provides instant information on the
location and status of each riser joint so high integrity riser
runs can be planned and executed for every well. Effective
run planning, execution, maintenance and optimized utilization
of these assets produces significant economic benefits for
contractors and operators drilling in deepwater environments.
Engineers and Rig Supervisors have to make sure needed
riser assets are on board, ready to run and are picked up in the
most appropriate configuration. Once a riser run is planned
and configured using RigMS, it is available online and may be
modified by drilling contractors’ personnel in the office or on
the rig with predetermined authority to make changes.
Subsea assets tagging solution
Subsea assets pose unique challenges for tagging. Long term
exposure to sea water and hydrostatic pressure demands
special RFID tags and mounting designs. With extensive
R&D and testing RigMS provides patent pending solutions for
tagging subsea assets. These solutions have been lab tested
as well as field tested extensively at working pressures over
5,000 psi. While RFID is the optimum solution, RigMS does
not require RFID tags to operate. The system provides total
flexibility to users to identify the assets from screens without
limiting or compromising any available functionality.
Rugged and reliable RFID tag, purpose-built for riser application
Reduce failure risks
Deepwater drilling contractors are committed to preventing
structural failures of riser string. Being able to access the
specifications and historical record, together with the current
and planned maintenance and inspections for each riser joint
enables the design of a high integrity riser run.
Reduce investment
Riser joints are very expensive and ordering lead times can
be 2 to 3 years depending on market conditions. Knowing
the location and history of all assets allows managers to
determine when replacements are needed and when assets
can remain in service.
Manage critical performance requirements of Mooring
RigMS provides a comprehensive mooring management
solution. Mooring asset data (from individual asset information to
management of mooring runs) are maintained on a well by well
basis.
A mooring manager can view the mooring chains, ropes, anchors
and associated jewelry to create mooring strings tied to each winch.
The typical configuration consists of eight unique strings per rig
with the ability to add hurricane strings as needed. Each asset
maintains data on the time spent “wet” and in which configuration.
If desired, contractors can apply tension data to each asset on a
given string to prioritize inspections on mooring assets that may
have seen more intense service.
An end-to-end solution for mooring management
RigMS utilizes patent pending procedures for applying rugged chips on mooring assets from chain links, rope sockets and anchors to
ensure the asset data follows the equipment from cradle to grave. Contractors and their designated vendors can utilize RigMS when
performing inspections mandated by the API 21 specifications to ensure all mooring assets are fit for service whether leaving the yard
or returning from offshore. The inspection engine takes into account ranges based on life of the asset to identify the type of inspection
required for the piece of equipment.
All associated inspection documents, original invoices and service records can be maintained within RigMS. These documents no
longer reside only in a file cabinet onshore, but are readily available in the yard and on the rig for quick access.
NOV’s System for Rig Equipment Tracking
“The oil and gas industry often struggles to manage the availability of its drilling equipment assets in far-flung, remote locations worldwide.
Equipment asset tracking efforts are traditionally a dreary and manually-intensive process.
Even when documentation is eventually found, it does not follow equipment movement between drilling or storage locations, a
shortcoming that caused companies to unnecessarily buy back-up equipment and tie up their capital. Houston-based National Oilwell
Varco has developed a system to help manage equipment, called RigMS.”
Designing an improving asset management system for offshore drilling operations
“Effective management of drilling assets in the offshore environment is a critical operational function with enormous cost implications
globally. Offshore rigs, particularly floaters, have many more assets than a typical land or onshore drilling operation, including highly
valuable subsea assets. While normally attached or assigned to the rig for long periods, offshore assets still move from rig to rig and from
rig to dock in support of routine maintenance and inspection programs, and in support of changing operational needs.”
Managing Offshore Mooring Assets
“By leveraging its established RigMS suite of drilling asset management solutions, National Oilwell Varco’s product group, NOV M/D
Totco, is now expanding those capabilities into the deepwater drilling environment. The flagship asset management application utilizes
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags on major drilling assets, read by using a rugged RFID reader with an operator’s asset database
stored in memory. This new RigMS Mooring Asset Management solution builds upon the proven asset management applications by
employing subsea RFID tagging technology on an offshore platform’s mooring systems, whether chain links, anchors, or wire rope
sockets.”
DEW Journal© March 2009
RigMS revolutionizes asset tracking/maintenance worldwide
“Increasingly, more oilfield companies around the world have attained a working familiarity with RigMS, from the National Oilwell Varco
M/D Totco product group, beginning with its original innovative technology package to its recently expanded capabilities. After pioneering
RigMS as a total asset management system with Web-accessible real-time information, the company has further enhanced the system’s
handling of asset tracking and management along with its widely-utilized computerized equipment maintenance.”
RigMS: global asset tracking and maintenance gold standard
“Few industries are as complex, capital intensive and globally dispersed as oil and gas - from the skilled people required to find and
produce the hydrocarbons to the equipment required for actual drilling. Virtually nothing gets company number crunchers’ attention
quicker than owned equipment which cannnot be readily located for movement to a new drilling site or even found on the company’s
books and must be purchased anew, often a very costly proposition.”
New RigMS system features greatly expanded capabilities
“After establishing global leadership with the original RigMS Asset Tracking and Maintenance Management Solution, National Oilwell
Varco’s new M/D Totco 3.1 release is taking this asset management system in a more comprehensive direction for managing assets in the
worldwide drilling and workover markets.
Building on its multi-year track record of successful field application, the product has become a system – incorporating equipment,
software, field services, consulting and management information services (MIS.) Through this new feature-rich service package, RigMS
Release 3.1 is specifically designed for oil and gas field usage, not just an adaptation from another industry. It includes the now well-known
Web application for supervisors and managers wanting real-time information on asset utilization and maintenance.”
RCM Principles Provide Predictive Asset Maintenance Benefits, Cost Savings
“Since its inception, the drilling industry has grown accustomed to a “fire fighting” culture, facing and solving problems as they occur.
A study on reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) proposes to move the industry toward a “fire prevention” culture by transferring
technologies from industries like aerospace, automotive and downstream petroleum, to develop smarter equipment monitoring and
management systems that enable the improved design, construction, and maintenance of rig equipment. RCM principles have yet to be
applied in the drilling industry because of the harsh conditions and repeated movement equipment is subjected to over a typical lifecycle.
This study involves identifying equipment on drilling rigs using field-proven radio frequency identifier (RFID) tags, and acoustic and
vibration sensors, to measure operational deviations from the baseline. The RFID tags ensure accurate historical data is obtained regarding
equipment location and movement. To establish trends, real-time rig equipment data is collected and charted...”
