individual players of this squad. Anderton, Liam Burns (1T), Donaghy, Malik, Raju, and Dev Sharma (1R) all showed real potential with the bat. Cooper was the outstanding fielder and developed his batting and bowling and would never forgive me if I didn’t mention his six hitting ability! Anderton, Euan Atkinson-Cowan (1G), Padfield, and Charlie Wilkinson (1S) were all outstanding with the ball and Burns showed continued development as a keeper throughout the season. As I said, this was not a team reliant on superstars but a squad of very inexperienced boys who worked tremendously hard together as a team. They lost a game to a side of boys who had been playing together for a long time and yet they competed with them throughout. This is a side who I will watch with great interest because they could all one day represent the school 1st XI or even higher honours. This was a group of boys whom I thoroughly enjoyed working with. Mr AD Mawson CROSS COUNTRY The Manchester Grammar School Relays served as our annual opener, the flat course of just over a mile easing the transition from the uniformity of the running track into the unpredictability of the mud and hills. The high point of the afternoon was our Seniors reclaiming their title, comfortably distancing themselves from the rest. We weren’t strong enough to compete for the overall title this year, but were one of the few schools able to turn out at least one team in every race. Between the MGS Relays and the Northern Schools there were few fixtures, either locally or further afield, so we kept the squads going with time trials in Games on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. These afternoons have been invaluable for the club over the years, serving two vital purposes: the front runners can measure their progress whilst enjoying the various runs which have acquired institutional status over the decades; equally important, however, are the boys who find themselves “choosing” cross-country as their Games option and swiftly discover that they are very good at it, becoming key team members by the end of the season. The Northern Schools ended our season, and although we were again pipped by St Anselm’s for the Roses, for me this was a strong ending to the year; looking at the individual results of each race I see many excellent efforts, proving how much the boys realise the importance of, and rise to, this occasion. Our Seniors ended the afternoon’s racing, packing several counters into the first fifteen runners. The ever-decreasing popularity of Cross Country, a trend which began perhaps as early as the late-Seventies, has led me to a point where the dearth of fixtures has made writing this report difficult. Within the school our squads remain both numerous and enthusiastic. This is partly due to the extraordinary network of support on which I am able to rely; I could not possibly name all the people who have unexpectedly stepped into the breach when needed, but Mr Mawson and Mr Ryan are just two of many who gave up hours of their time enabling us to attend fixtures. The boys’ team spirit, however, is what really matters, and as long as both of these elements remain strong, then we can continue to buck the national trend of apathy and carry on with the mud, sweat and spikes. That being said they were a lively bunch of lads who trained hard and would have played whenever and wherever they could. The practice matches against the 1st XI were competitive and close, a big help to Mr Wareing in his bid for another District Cup win. Our most disappointing moment would have to be against Dallam where we tamely submitted, albeit to a strong, largely 1st XI Team side 3-0, but the squad recovered well, with wins against Stonyhurst (in torrential conditions) and Morecambe being particularly memorable. Particular stars were Mark Chan, who has developed into a solid and reliable centre half and Mo Suleman, who made appearances for the 1st XI. If we could have had more fixtures, I have little doubt that the whole 1st and 2nd XI Squad would have been stronger and developed more rapidly. My hope is that next season, with both sides entered into the Lancashire Cup, this will improve.
