<strong>The</strong> <strong>Air</strong> <strong>Force</strong> fighter most successful aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> MiGs <strong>in</strong> aerial combat was <strong>the</strong> F-4. <strong>The</strong> radar-guided AIM-7 Sparrow accounted<br />
for more of <strong>the</strong> victories than any o<strong>the</strong>r weapon.<br />

Bomb<strong>in</strong>g Halts and Pauses <strong>in</strong> <strong>Air</strong> Operations Over North <strong>Vietnam</strong><br />
May 2-May 8, 96 .<br />
Purpose was to test Hanoi’s response and will<strong>in</strong>gness to negotiate.<br />
Dec. 24, 96 -Jan. , 966.<br />
Christmas cease-fire, extended by Lyndon B. Johnson’s “peace<br />
<strong>in</strong>itiative.” Hanoi failed to respond.<br />
Feb. 8- , 967.<br />
Cease-fire for Tet religious holiday. Perception was that Hanoi<br />
might be will<strong>in</strong>g to negotiate. Instead, North <strong>Vietnam</strong> took <strong>the</strong> opportunity<br />
to move 25,000 tons of war materiel south.<br />
Aug. 24-Sept. 4, 967.<br />
Cessation of attacks around Hanoi.<br />
Jan. 29, 968.<br />
Unilateral 36-hour cease-fire for Tet. On Jan. 31, North <strong>Vietnam</strong><br />
and <strong>the</strong> Viet Cong launched <strong>the</strong> Tet Offensive aga<strong>in</strong>st bases all<br />
over South <strong>Vietnam</strong>.<br />
Maj. Ralph Kuster shot down this MiG-<br />
17 with his F-105’s 20 mm guns.<br />
March , 968.<br />
Halt of bomb<strong>in</strong>g north of 20th parallel. Under political pressure,<br />
<strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e was moved south to <strong>the</strong> 19th parallel.<br />
Nov. , 968-April 6, 972.<br />
Halt of all bomb<strong>in</strong>g of North <strong>Vietnam</strong>. Reconnaissance flights<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>ued and attacks on <strong>the</strong>m led to “protective reaction” strikes.<br />
Jan. , 97 .<br />
Suspension of m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, bomb<strong>in</strong>g, and o<strong>the</strong>r offensive operations<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>st North <strong>Vietnam</strong> as Paris peace talks approached conclusion.<br />
Jan. 28, 97 .<br />
Cease-fire, prior to US disengagement from <strong>the</strong> war.<br />
In addition, <strong>the</strong>re were rout<strong>in</strong>e halts of 48 hours at Christmas<br />
and New Years, 1966-67 and 1967-68.<br />
