A MESSAGE FROM VALMET AUTOMOTIVE, CONTRACT MANUFACTURER OF SPECIALTY CARS
VALMET AIMS TO GROW AND DEVELOP
Valmet Automotive started the cooperation with Porsche AG ten years
ago. It is a very important milestone in the history of our company.
The production of Porsche Boxster was started up in record time and it
was followed by a rapid increase in volume due to the huge success of
the car.
Alongside with the new Boxster and Cayman, Valmet has developed
from an assembling factory into a manufacturing partner, who supports
Porsche development teams with its experience and expertise. At the
same time both the manufacturing intensity and the production output
in Finland have increased.
One of the most attractive achievements in Porsche - Valmet cooperation
is the Cayman, which immediately after launching was ranked
the best car by the American customers in the J D Power study. I see
this as a concrete and well-verified evidence of the strength of our
combined efforts.
Valmet has learnt a lot from this partnership, and I believe, also
Porsche has got some inspiration from our way of doing. Many common
workshops and projects have generated developments for example in
flexibility and in efficiency. One good example is the logistics project,
whereby material transports were transferred from road to rail.
Porsche and Valmet Automotive have succeeded in building an
open cooperation based on trust. This is a true partnership. In the past
ten years large networks have been created. The combined experience
and know-how make us a strong, winning team.
We at Valmet Automotive continously improve our production
process and our services. We show continuous development in quality,
delivery precision and effectiveness. We want to further increase our
flexibility and meet the customer needs.
Valmet Automotive wants to be an effective and flexible partner
for automotive industry also in the future. We seek growth both in new
manufacturing projects and by expanding the scope of our service
package. In other words, Valmet’s aim is to grow and to develop.

Ten years of Porsche
production in Finland
The production of Porsche Boxster in Finland was started in autumn
1997, as Porsche AG was not able to meet the demand for the new
model in its own plant. The number of the first generation Porsche
Boxster cars manufactured in Uusikaupunki in 1997–2004 totals
109,213 units.
Today Valmet Automotive manufactures both models of the
Boxster product line. The production of the new Boxster started in
2004 and the Cayman in 2005.
At Valmet Automotive, Porsche Boxster and Porsche Cayman are
built according to customer orders. The manufacturing process includes
welding, painting and final assembly. Today Valmet Automotive employs
800 people.
Valmet Automotive is the only factory outside Germany producing
Porsche cars. More than 40 million Euro have been invested in the
production facilities during the past few years. For example in welding,
the grade of automation and the capacity have been increased.

contribution
to Porsche’s
success”
Mr Michael Macht and Mr Wolfgang Schorr handed out
Porsche’s 10-year present to Mr Juhani Suvinen and Mr
Olli Vaartimo.
Porsche AG have extended the contract with
Valmet Automotive until 2011, confirmed
Mr Michael Macht, Executive Vice President
Production and Logistics, in the celebration
of the ten-year cooperation on the 16th of
October in Uusikaupunki. He also expressed
the satisfaction of Porsche AG with the
cooperation.
”In the past ten years Porsche and Valmet
have come a long way together. And we are
absolutely aware of the fact that Valmet made
a decisive contribution to Porsche’s great
development in the 90’s.
Over all these years in which we have been
building premium sports cars together, Valmet
has been a fair, reliable and calculable partner
for Porsche. The performance Valmet has
shown on our behalf since the production start
of the first Boxster deserves full and unlimited
respect. The product quality so significant
particularly for a premium manufacturer like
Porsche has remained exceptional over all
these years.
The ramp-up of the second Boxster
generation and the Cayman was also
completed without any difficulties worth
mentioning, everything going to our com-
plete satisfaction. I also see the ramp-up
of the Cayman as an example of successful
cooperation. I hardly believe that anybody
will be able in the foreseeable future to build
a car rocketing up from zero to No 1 in the J D
Power study virtually overnight.
The customers and the international motor
press accept the Finnish-produced Boxsters
and Caymans without the slightest debate. I’m
convinced that this works mainly because the
customers have absolutely no objections to
the quality of the cars and because Finland has
such a positive image in the world.”

Mr Olli Vaartimo, Executive Vice President of
Metso and Chairman of the Board of Valmet
Automotive, said that the manufacturing
of Porsche sports cars has brought positive
impact for the Finnisch technology industry
and Metso.
”The Porsche production has
strengthened the capabilities and knowhow
of Valmet Automotive. We can be
proud of the continuous development of
productivity and quality. The company will
be further developed by investing both in
the development of the processes and also
in the operating models. In addition to the
interesting business Metso feels the social
responsibility to ensure constant operations
and the development of the car factory in
Uusikaupunki.
Metso is proud of its subsidiary. Even if
Valmet Automotive has a fairly small share
in Metso’s portfolio, the interest towards it
is rather remarkable among various interest
groups of the Corporation. This has a positive
effect on Metso’s investor image - and maybe
indirectly a couple of Porsches have found a
buyer as well.”

New clear coat process
The clear coat process of Valmet Automotive
utilizes totally new equipment and programs.
Now, the whole clear coat process is
performed by robots. The clear coating was
renewed during the summer shut-down
this year, and took only four weeks. The
dismantling of the old equipment took three
weeks, and the ramp-up of the new process
one week.
The change ran well in spite of a very tight
schedule. To restart the series production
after the shut-down involved lots of tests
and adjustments, says paint shop manager
Juhani Kettunen. The new robots have been
integrated into the process under the sur-
veillance of the equipment supplier and
Valmet experts.
The persons involved are properly
prepared to operate the new clear coating
techniques, says project manager Leo
Myllymaa. Sames Technologies, the supplier
of the equipment, preassembled the clear
coat station in their premises in France, where
employees both from our paint shop and
maintenance got acquainted with it before it
was installed in our factory in Finland.
The investment worth about 2,5 Million
Euro included the modernization and
automation of the clear coat process. After this
change, it will be possible to start applying
two-component lacquer in the future. Also
when using current materials, the new
technique further improves the paint quality.
At the same time, the base coat automates
were renewed.
Valmet Automotive’s painting process has
been systematically developed to meet the
highest quality requirements and tightening
environmental norms. The primer materials
as well as the base coat are waterborne.
Currently, different body models with over 30
colours can be flexibly treated in the painting
process. Also bigger bodies such as SUV’s and
mini-vans can be painted.
ORANGE AND BLACK
The orange Limited-edition Boxster is followed by the Cayman S as ”Porsche Design Edition 1”.
Two Limited-edition Porsche cars inspire
the Finnish car builders as well as Porsche
customers in autumn 2007. The orange 2008
Limited-edition Boxster and Boxster S totals
for 500 cars for the customers in the U.S. and
Canada. The last car of the run was delivered in
mid October from Uusikaupunki.
Right after the new Limited-edition
Cayman S was launched into production. The
exclusive all-black special edition Cayman S is
a nod to the Porsche Design and the famous
Chronograph 1s designed by Ferdinand
Alexander Porsche precisely 35 years ago.
Altogether 777 cars will be produced.
