Our Commitment to
“People not Profits”
Credit Unions are designed for People, not Profits. The Summit Federal Credit
Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned and operated exclusively by
our members. That means there are no outside stockholders who require a return
on their investment, which allows us to return the profits back to our members in
the form of higher rates on deposits, lower loan rates, low/no fees plus other
valuable benefits.
As a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative, The Summit Federal
Credit Union is deeply committed to our members. We uphold our fundamental
responsibility to actively serve people within our field of membership, and as
appropriate, the communities they live in. We treat all members with the utmost
respect and dignity; and we provide honest, fair financial services to all members at
all times.
We provide a wide array of low cost financial products and services to meet the
needs of our diverse group of current and potential members. We consistently
seek new and better ways to reach out to the underserved areas in our field of
membership. In all facets of operations, we will continually demonstrate the
benefits and value of membership in The Summit Federal Credit Union.
The Summit Federal Credit Union exists to serve our members with the goal of helping them
to become financially self-sufficient and successful. We place the greatest importance on
financial literacy and education to assist our members in their everyday lives.
The Summit strives to offer services designed to improve the economic and social well
being of all members from all socio-economic backgrounds, including our low- and
moderate-income members, and to return financial value to all those who participate
in our member- owned financial cooperative.
Our Commitment
to the Credit Union Philosophy
The Summit Federal Credit Union will work to build and strengthen our unique credit
union movement by providing financial and in-kind resources to others within the credit
union community. We will actively advocate for the credit union at all levels of
government and in other appropriate public forums. We will participate in local, state
and national cooperative activities as appropriate, and will strive to build and strengthen
relationships with other sectors of the national cooperative movement.
Buffalo Credit Unions Join Together
We’ve enhanced important relationships with other
Buffalo area credit unions by taking a leadership role
in the establishment of the Erie/Niagara Credit Union
Cooperative group. The mission is to raise the
awareness of all credit unions in an effort to provide
affordable financial services to members in that region.
This is a long term cooperative plan of action
including joint advertising, a website explaining the
benefits of credit union membership
www.acreditunioncan.com, plus other key legislative
and educational initiatives.
The Summit Federal Credit Union will endeavor to preserve credit union
democratic principles, including demographic representation and volunteer
participation in credit union activities. Here are some of the ways that we are
involved in the credit union movement on a local, regional, state,
and national level:
Fee Exemption Program for Members of Modest Means
One way we help members each and every day is to provide affordable financial services including
reduced fees, higher rates on deposits and lower rates on loans. We strongly believe in providing
members of modest means the necessary tools, plus the knowledge to start saving and building
credit to begin on the road to a solid financial future. In short, we exist to serve members, and we
say it right in our slogan, We’re Here For You.
One way that The Summit assists members of modest means is by waiving our monthly Relationship
Balance Fee. It’s called the Income Exemption Program. The program offers qualified members
an exemption from Relationship Balance Fees for a period of up to 3 years. We believe that it is
our duty to help members get on solid financial footing to help them in their daily lives.
We currently serve members in a variety of underserved areas including the City of Rochester,
Town of Henrietta, City of Geneva, City of Buffalo, and Town of Amherst.
Free BALANCE Financial Fitness Program
As a not-for-profit member owned financial institution, we live this motto everyday; “We’re Here
to Improve Our Member’s Lives.” We may have taken our greatest step toward offering financial
stability for members with free and confidential counseling services that are now available to
them through our participation in the “BALANCE SM Financial Fitness” program. We believe
that this valuable resource may be
one of the most significant services
ever offered to our members,
especially those who face financial
challenges. BALANCE serves to
help our members manage money
and financial issues better than they
can on their own, and helps
members qualify for credit, or
improve their credit scores so that
they can obtain credit less
expensively.
we can accomplish that.
Bugetmania! Game for
High School Students
Teenage
students at the
St. Joseph’s
Villa Avalon
School had a
chance to
contemplate real-life
budgeting questions as
they participated in an
interactive game called
Budgetmania!,
conducted by staff from
The Summit Federal
Credit Union.
Participating students
were assigned an
occupation and received
his or her monthly
income in play money.
Job Shadowing Program
Students from The Community
Place of Greater Rochester
The Summit
has hosted a
number of job
shadowing
events where
teens and atrisk
youth learn
about job skills
and it what it
takes to succeed in a business setting. We
have held these sessions at our branches and
at our corporate headquarters in an effort to
reach as many high-school age kids as
possible. Our staff has volunteered their
Avalon School students participating in
Budgetmania! with the help of
The Summit’s staff.
The students then moved through a variety
of “stations” that mimic the real-life
financial choices and challenges they may
encounter in a typical month. They had to
make many tough choices based on the
amount of money they made and had already
spent. The best news of all, not one student
overspent their budget!
time and talent to help them get a glimpse
of the education and skills needed for
specific
credit
union
jobs.
We Serve
Through direct financial support or other in-kind contributions to
worthwhile local organizations in all markets served, and by
United Way CASH/VITA Program
Chicken BBQ at Corporate Headquarters
to benefit Eastman Commons
The Summit Federal Credit Union has partnered with The United Way of Greater
Rochester’s CASH/VITA program assisting underserved residents in this area. CASH
stands for Creating Assests, Savings, and Hope. VITA stands for Volunteer Income
Tax Assistance.
The Credit Union has a variety of unique programs that help members in their daily
financial lives. Volunteers from The Summit staff helped hundreds of participants
complete their tax returns at no charge and also counseled people on strategies for
savings, home ownership, and the establishment/repair of their credit. We also reached
out to over 200 unbanked participants and brought them into The Summit’s
membership family, an achievement we’re very proud of.
Deep Community Roots
The values that The Summit Federal Credit Union was founded on is as enduring today as the day we
first began serving members. For over sixty years, we’ve played an active role supporting our members;
where they work, where they live and have made a vigorous commitment to give back to the
communities at large in which we serve.
