Middle School Jazz Band
Audition Material
General Information:
The new audition materials were written by Joe Pappas, local composer and
arranger.
The audition music has been written so that you can prepare it individually
or with your full band.
Students must have a minimum score of at least half the points possible in
order to be accepted into the ensemble.
2013 (Set 1) Audition Material
The new audition will have 3 parts:
o 1. The students will play the concert Bb and F blues scales from
memory. One octave, concert pitch. (5 pts. each).
o 2. The students will play 2 etudes out of a rotating set of 4 written
specifically for this audition by Joe Pappas. We will be using Set I this
year. (15 pts. each)
o 3. The students will sight-read an 8-12 measure excerpt from a
standard swing chart. (10 pts.) (Tiebreaker for audition).
o The total audition will be scored out of 50 points.

Middle School Jazz Band Audition Information
Students in the 7 th or 8 th grade may audition for the band.
All students wishing to participate in this band must audition.
There are no exceptions to this rule.
Students will be placed in the band in order of highest to lowest
score based on numbers needed in each section of the band.
Students must earn at least half of the possible points during their
audition in order to be placed in the group.
All selected participants must be in attendance for both scheduled
rehearsals to be allowed to perform at the final concert.
Participants must report on time and will not be allowed to leave
early from either rehearsal. Failure to abide by this rule will result
in removal from the band. (An exception may be made in the
event of a family emergency with the final decision made by the
Middle School Jazz Band Vice President.)
School band directors or a designated building representative
MUST be in attendance with their student(s) for the entirety of the
audition and rehearsal dates.
Auditions will be blind auditions with the exception of the rhythm
section due to the need to judge technique.
