the highly specialized needs of all

without regard to religion, race or 

ability to pay. Although we treat 

children from any locality, we 

consider the greater New York 

metropolitan area, Hudson 

Valley and Connecticut to be 

our primary communities.

We are very proud to share the 2012 Annual Report of Blythedale Children’s Hospital. Last year we celebrated our first 

full year in our new $65.3 million, 56,000 square-foot inpatient building. The opening of this magnificent facility has 

enabled us to treat many more medically fragile children in a modern, technologically sophisticated, and patient and 

family centered environment. 

2012 was also highlighted by the opening of The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for Speech & Audiology, the 6,000 

square-foot new home to our inpatient and outpatient speech, hearing and language services. I invite you to come see 

this state-of-the-art communication Center, and witness firsthand the miracles that take place within. 

This past year was an important one on many levels. While our vision for our new facility has been fulfilled, we look to the 

future of children’s healthcare with an eye on how Blythedale can best serve the unique needs of children with complex 

medical conditions. Improving the delivery of healthcare services to children is at the heart of everything we do. 

We have been fortunate to count on an extraordinary group of donors - individuals, foundations, corporations, and 

the community - to help us reach our goals throughout this historic time at Blythedale, as well as a Board of Trustees 

who were courageous in making the decision to move forward with all of our modernization plans and have generously

Patient Care 

Setting the standard for how care is delivered to medically fragile children is central to everything we 

do at Blythedale Children’s Hospital. With more than 120 years of experience, Blythedale is a nationally 

recognized leader in developing innovative, multidisciplinary inpatient programs. As one of only 

19 specialty children’s hospitals in the United States, Blythedale has the combined staff, expertise 

and resources – including the largest pediatric therapy department in New York State – to provide 

exceptional comprehensive care for medically complex children and support for their families. 

Blythedale cares for children with a wide range of complex and often catastrophic medical and 

rehabilitative conditions, including complex respiratory disease, traumatic brain injury, heart disease, 

cancer, neuromuscular disorders, and other serious genetic conditions.

2012 Highlights 

• In November 2012, Blythedale celebrated the 

opening of The Stavros Niarchos Foundation 

Center for Speech & Audiology. The new 6,000 

square foot Center is home to Blythedale’s 

comprehensive inpatient and outpatient speech, 

hearing and language services, as well as 

dedicated assistive technology rooms. 

• Blythedale recorded 548 unique patient 

admissions in 2012, totaling 28,559 inpatient 

days. 60% of Blythedale’s patients were referred 

directly from PICUs and NICUs. Approximately 

half were admitted for comprehensive acute 

inpatient rehabilitation (including recovery 

from complicated surgery, multiple trauma, 

and rheumatologic crisis), while nearly a third 

were admitted for respiratory care or ventilator 

weaning. 21% were admitted for neurologic 

care, including recovery from traumatic brain 

injury and stroke. The Hospital’s average length 

of stay was 52 days. The Hospital received 

admissions from more than 20 hospitals and 

leading academic centers in 2012, including 

New York Presbyterian (Columbia and Cornell), 

Westchester Medical Center, Montefiore 

Medical Center, Steven and Alexandra Cohen 

Children’s Medical Center of New York/North 

Shore LIJ Health System, Jacobi Medical Center, 

NYU/Bellevue and Mount Sinai. 

• Last year, Blythedale celebrated the 15th 

anniversary of the enormously successful 

ventilator-weaning program. To date, more than 

1,500 medically fragile infants and children have 

been successfully weaned from mechanical 

ventilation, and, after six years, 97% of the 

children weaned remain ventilator free. 

• Blythedale continued contracting with school 

districts in the greater metropolitan region to 

provide on-site Physical Therapy (21 schools in 

10 districts), Occupational Therapy (25 schools 

in 6 districts) and Speech Therapy (26 sites in 11 

districts) for students. In addition, the Hospital 

provided Audiology services in eight schools. 

The Hospital’s therapy outsourcing program 

serves school districts in Westchester and 

Rockland counties. 

• Blythedale has a rigorous program for continuous 

quality assessment and improvement, and 

a focus on best practices. In 2012, our bloodstream 

infection rate was zero, as were 

incidences of vent-related pneumonia, late-stage 

decubitis ulcers and infections pre- and posttransplant. 

85% of our patients were discharged 

home, and in a Press Ganey survey, 95% of 

parents reported that they would recommend 

Blythedale Children’s Hospital.

Research 

Research is a top priority at Blythedale. Through its Pediatric Research Program, Blythedale conducts 

select studies that promise to have a significant impact on treatment modalities for children with 

complex medical and physical challenges. Our robust Research program is a natural outgrowth of our 

commitment to children and our culture of innovative clinical and multi-disciplinary care. Blythedale’s 

Scientific Advisory Board, comprised of prominent scientists and pediatric faculty, provides feedback on 

our research studies. 

In 2012, Blythedale’s Research Task Force identified short and longer term goals, including the vitally 

important ongoing development of collaborations with other universities and organizations. To that end, 

the Research team identified 39 ideas for future study, and is targeting a “top ten” list which includes 

studies on Balance Master intervention, urinary tract infection treatment, the use of nebulized medication 

to control drooling in infants, and feeding frequency in children with long-term feeding issues. 


• Robotic research continued at Blythedale, with 

two collaborative studies involving MIT, Riley 

Children’s Hospital, Rancho Los Amigos, and 

New York Medical College. These studies are 

looking at key variables that underlie recovery 

of motor function, attention to task and 

intensity of practice. Participants continue to 

show gains in muscle tone following therapy 

with the elbow/shoulder and/or wrist robot. 

• A team of physical therapists at Blythedale 

continued their gait analysis study utilizing 

Balance Master technology. The Balance Master 

offers visual feedback to patients as they 

stand on different surfaces, challenging and 

strengthening components of their balance 

skills. This interactive technology is being used 

to study walking velocity and check for safe 

walking speeds as it relates to crossing a city 

street. The team presented their preliminary 

findings at the annual meeting of the American 

Physical Therapy Association in Florida, in June. 

• Blythedale began preparation of an exciting 

new study to be done in collaboration with 

Columbia, Cornell and Burke. This promising 

new line of research uses transcranial direct 

current stimulation (tDCS) and will be started 

in 2013. tDCS is a non-invasive, painless tool 

that has been used to stimulate brain activity in 

a variety of conditions, including: Parkinson’s, 

stroke, and sleep disorders. 

• Members of Blythedale’s research team were 

published in the November 2012 issue of the 

American Journal of Physical Medicine and 

Rehabilitation. The article, New Horizons for 

Robot-Assisted Therapy in Pediatrics, highlights 

Blythedale’s pediatric study of robot-assisted 

therapies for the upper and lower limbs, as well 

as potential benefits, challenges and needs for 

future development.

Teaching & Training 

Education is an important component of the mission of Blythedale Children’s Hospital. Serving as a 

training ground for the next generation of pediatric specialists, more than 100 colleges and universities 

throughout the region rely on our Hospital to provide clinical training to scores of professional students in 

a wide range of fields. Our staff serves as faculty at top colleges and universities, sharing their expertise 

in areas including medicine, nursing, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational 

therapy, child life, social work and hospital administration. Uniformly, we have received very high praise 

in evaluations from these residents regarding their clinical experience at Blythedale, and the excellent 

teaching provided by our clinical staff. 

Blythedale is also committed to educating parents to be competent caregivers, helping them every step of 

the way as they grow into their new role as caregivers of a child with complex medical needs. In addition, 

we are proud to serve as a vital resource to our community, offering programs tailored to every aspect of 

child health.

• Thirty-seven medical residents and fellows 

spent at least a portion of their residencies 

at Blythedale in 2012. These physicians were 

graduates from the leading medical schools in 

the U.S. and abroad, and completed rotations 

in Rehabilitation Medicine, Orthopedics, 

Pulmonology and Psychiatry. 

• In addition to providing clinical training 

experiences for 175 nursing students in 2012, 

the Hospital provided more than 50 clinical 

internship opportunities to students in a wide 

range of departments, including Respiratory, 

Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy, as 

well as Social Work and Child Life. 

• Formal teaching, in the form of Grand Rounds, 

took place twice-monthly at Blythedale in 2012. 

These programs, which fulfill GME requirements, 

were presented by expert physicians from our 

major referring institutions, including New York 

Presbyterian Hospital, Mount Sinai, Montefiore 

Medical Center, and NYU School of Medicine. 

In addition, Blythedale physicians, nurse 

practitioners and psychologists held “lunch and 

learn” sessions on alternating weeks for staff, 

lecturing on wide-ranging specialty care topics. 

• In 2012, Blythedale continued its vital 

community service as a certified Training 

Center for the American Heart Association 

(AHA) in both Pediatric Advanced Life Support 

(PALS) and Basic Life Support (BLS). In addition 

to bringing these important programs out into 

the community, the Hospital offers a variety of 

courses on-site. In 2012, 3,412 people were 

trained in CPR, PALS and first aid through 

Blythedale’s Training Center. In addition, 164 

parents and caregivers were trained last year. 

We have 124 instructors registered with our 

Training Center. 

• As the sponsor of the New York Regional 

Chapter of the Society for Pediatric Nursing 

(SPN), Blythedale held a conference in 

October on Pediatric Environmental Health 

attended by nearly 50 nurses. 

• Through support of the Morton K. and Jane 

Blaustein Foundation, Blythedale continued 

Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training for 

staff. In 2012, 58 employees completed the 

three-day training session, and 87 staff were 

recertified through a one-day program.

Advocacy 

Advocating on a federal, state and local level for programs that benefit children with special healthcare 

needs is paramount to our mission. Blythedale is also committed to providing injury-prevention and 

health-promotion services to minimize the incidence of accidents and disease among all children. We 

continue to demonstrate our commitment to reducing the number of preventable injuries and deaths 

among children, through our participation in numerous injury-prevention-related activities. We provide 

CPR training and car seat checks, and make presentations on bicycle and water safety at local health 

fairs. Blythedale’s medical and clinical professionals serve as an important resource, speaking on a 

wide range of children’s health topics to the media, corporate groups, community organizations, and 

school and parent groups. 


• In 2012, Blythedale worked with the nationallybased 

Children’s Hospital Association to 

advocate for the implementation of federal 

healthcare reform so that it takes into account 

the special health needs of children, especially 

those with complex medical conditions. Hospital 

leadership maintained strong relationships 

with federal, state and local representatives in 

2012, and enjoyed visits from representatives 

of the offices of Senator Charles Schumer and 

Congresswoman Nita Lowey, as well as visits 

from NYS Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins, 

NYS Assemblyman Richard Gottfried, and NYS 

Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer. 

• Funded by a $241,278 grant from Kohl’s 

Department Stores, Blythedale’s “Eat Well, Be 

Well” program teaches healthy eating habits to 

children in kindergarten through eighth grade 

by providing general nutrition guidelines to 

students, parents and school faculty. In 2012, 

the program reached more than 19,000 students 

in 23 school districts. Last year the program 

expanded to Yonkers, and added 10 schools. 

• Safe Kids Westchester/Blythedale Children’s 

Hospital is the local coalition leader for the 

Safe Kids USA campaign. In 2012, Blythedale 

maintained two car-seat fitting stations (one 

on-site and one at Fairview Fire Department), 

and trained eight Special Needs technicians 

and certified 32 Car Seat Safety technicians. 

In addition, more than 150 car seats were 

distributed to low-income families. 

• Last fall, Dr. Chris Rackley, a pediatric 

neuropsychologist at Blythedale, joined former 

Super Bowl champ Dorsey Levens on a panel 

to discuss concussions, following a screening of 

Leven’s documentary, “Bell Rung”. Dr. Rackley 

spoke of the vital importance of recognizing 

concussion and treatment following injury. 

• In October, Blythedale joined forces with Kohl’s 

Cares for Kids, and the Westchester County 

Department of Health, to celebrate National 

Food Day – a nationwide initiative aimed at 

inspiring adults and children to pre pare and 

serve healthy, sustainable, affordable food. 

Held at the County Center in White Plains, 

nearly 500 people attended the event. 

• Following the opening of the new inpatient 

building, Blythedale made a significant 

donation of no-longer-needed medical 

equipment to the AFYA Foundation, for use in 

earth-quake ravaged Haiti. Equipment ranging 

from wheelchairs to cribs was delivered to 

an orphanage for abandoned physically and 

developmentally disabled children.

How to Make a Gift to Blythedale 

When you make a gift to Blythedale, you are helping miracles unfold. 

An enthusiastic four-year-old high-fives her pediatrician as she recuperates from complicated kidney transplant surgery... With the 

encouragement of his physical therapist, a 17-year-old lacrosse star takes his first independent steps following surgery to remove 

a brain tumor... And a “micro-preemie”, born at just 22 weeks gestation, takes her first independent breath following months of 

dependence on mechanical ventilation. 

We are inspired by all of our patients, and every day become more devoted to providing them with every opportunity to dream, 

aspire and achieve. Philanthropy is key to offering children the broad range of services to address their medical and rehabilitative 

needs, and transform their dreams to reality. 

Phase II of our Capital Campaign is in full swing. In November 2012, we celebrated the opening of The Stavros Niarchos Foundation 

Center for Speech & Audiology, surrounded by donors, patient families and staff. The remainder of Phase II will advance our vision 

for a new Blythedale through a renovation of the existing building to accommodate an expanded Day Hospital and Early Childhood 

Center, slated to open later this year. 

In our current healthcare economic climate, the reality is that reimbursements alone cannot cover the full cost of care for a child with 

extensive and complex medical needs. Blythedale treats patients regardless of financial ability and a staggering 70 percent of our 

patients are Medicaid-dependent. The generosity of our friends and community fills the critical gap and allows Blythedale to grow 

and develop an ever-broadening scope of services. In order to continue to bring our vision to reality, we need your support.
