Dear Friends of Holy Spirit, 

Greetings to each of you as we celebrate Labor Day 

weekend. I invite you to join with me in praying for all those 

who are unemployed or under-employed. It is a terrible experience 

to not be able to pay one’s basic bills and to put 

proper food on the table because of employment issues. 

Let us be thankful for our employment and remember those 

who are without sufficient work. 

One of our parishioners, Jean Donlan, has asked to 

start a Monday morning prayer service for any parent who 

wishes to join. This prayer service will begin at 7:30 a.m. 

(after school drop-off) and will last no more than 15 minutes. 

During this time, Scripture will be shared and there will be 

the opportunity to pray for any special intentions for our 

children. Jean also hopes to create an avenue for those who 

cannot attend the prayer service, to also communicate their 

special intentions for the prayer service. The prayer service 

will begin September 9th at 7:30 a.m. in the parish chapel. 

During the summer months we had two funerals; until 

about two weeks ago. Just in the last week we have had the 

funerals of Jim Hines, Sue Gootee, John Dwyer, Jim Uberta 

and Art Slinger. Please remember their families in your 

prayers as they continue life without their loved one. We all 

know how challenging this can be.

ADULT CATECHISM 

CLASSES OFFERED 

Are you interested in learning more about your Catholic 

Faith? If so, Fr. Paul and Fr. Juan will be holding monthly 

classes, all classes will be held at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Spirit 

Church. The first class will be held on September 17th and 

will be over chapters 7 thru 9. The classes will follow the 

“Adult Catechism of the Catholic Church.” Additional classes 

will be held on October 29th, November 26th, January 14th, 

February 18th, March 18th, and April 8th. We welcome all

MUSIC MINISTRY SIGN-UP 

Now is the perfect time to sign-up for the Music Ministry. 

The 10:30 a.m. Sunday choir will begin singing in September. 

We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 

9 p.m. in the church. We usually sing 3 Sundays per 

month and for special occasions (like Thanksgiving, 

Christmas, & Holy Week). We would love to have many 

new members. If you can sing Tenor, Soprano, Alto, or 

Bass, we’d love to have you. We welcome all singers high 

school age or older (grade school students may come with 

a parent!). Our first rehearsal will be on Thursday, September 

5th. Please come to the piano after Masses on the 

weekend or call Paula Slinger, Music Director, at 562- 

0197 or 353-9404 and let me know you are coming! !

You may also sign up for the Youth Choir. Our new 

director is Tyler Murrell. We sing two Sundays per month 

at the noon Mass (usually the 2nd and 3rd Sundays). The 

Youth choir accepts students from the 8th grade upward.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES NEWS 

Catholic Charities provides the Court Appointed Special 

Advocate (CASA) program out of our New Albany office. 

CASA volunteers in Floyd and Washington Counties are the 

spokespersons in court for children in cases of abuse and 

neglect. Volunteers undergo 30 intensive hours of training, 

are sworn in by a judge and make a year-long commitment to 

build a relationship with a child to help them find stability and 

hope for the future. To volunteer for our program in southern

can become a CASA volunteer anywhere else in the state.

this special ministry; OUR CHILDREN NEED YOU!

CYO CHESS TEAM 

The deadline to sign up for the 2013 Little Flower Chess 

Team is Tuesday, September 10th. There will be three 

Wednesday matches (likely Oct. 16, Oct. 23rd, & Nov. 6th), 

each running from 5-7 p.m. and involving several schools. 

There will also be a post-season CYO Chess Tournament 

(most likely Nov. 9th). There are three CYO divisions: 3rd 

grade and under, 6th grade and under, and 8th grade and 

under. Last year, students from Little Flower, Holy Spirit and 

Our Lady of Lourdes competed. No experience is necessary. 

The fee is $35 for each student. If your child/children want to

HONDURAN APRON PROJECT 

Do you have aprons at home that go unused? We would 

love for you to donate them to our Sister parish in Honduras. 

Many women in Honduras wear aprons everyday 

when cooking and working around the house. 

If you can donate an apron or have extra material that can 

be used to make aprons please bring donations to church 

and look for the wicker baskets marked Honduras Donations 

located in the east and west vestibules. We plan to 

take the aprons on the January visit. Baskets are available 

on the 3 rd and 4 th weekends. Collections will continue 

through December. Mary Peat is in charge of the apron 

project and if you have any questions please contact her 

at 357-6895. 

After a summer hiatus, the Book Club will meet on Tuesday, 

September 10th at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Center. We will 

discuss “The Ear of the Heart” and a new book will be 

chosen. 

Anyone is welcome to attend! 

Holy Spirit recognizes PreK-12 Catholic Education as 

a ministry to form young people in spirit, mind, and body. 

We support this ministry through Holy Spirit Grade School 

and Scecina Memorial High School, our parish High School. 

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY 

If you are interested in helping create Prayer 

Shawls for this wonderful ministry, we usually 

meet twice a month. Everyone is welcome and no 

experience is necessary. We have instructors available 

to teach knitting and crocheting.

CENTERING PRAYER WORKSHOP 

The Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand are offering a 

workshop, “Introduction to Centering Prayer,” on 

Saturday, September 7th at Kordes Center in Ferdinand, 

Indiana. Centering Prayer is a simple, nondenominational 

form of prayer that is quiet and reflective. 

Presented by Sister Maria Tasto, OSB, and Jim Birk. The 

workshop runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Eastern time.

Safety Policy for Children at Holy Spirit Church and School 

In an effort to make our campus safe and secure, we need to introduce 

some policies that have been published, but not strictly enforced. While 

children are always welcome at Holy Spirit, they must be with adults at all 

times. We are a facility with candles, chemicals, heavy furniture, tools, 

electrical equipment, boiler rooms and computers, all of which can provide 

dangers for young children. 

1. No children are to be in any room, hallway or space inside or outside 

our buildings unless accompanied by at least 2 adults over the age of 18. 

2. If there are not 2 adults to watch children, they may accompany their 

parents, but they must be in the rooms with their parents during their 

meetings. 

3. No children will be permitted to run up and down stairs or through halls 

of the church, parish center or school. 

4. No children under the age of 18 will be permitted to be on our outside 

grounds without supervision. 

5. No children shall be in any boiler rooms or kitchens. 

6. You may not leave your children for CYO or sports practices of any kind 

if the coach is not yet present. 

7. No siblings can be left at CYO or sports practices unless they are under 

the supervision of the coach and the coach has taken the responsibility 

for them. 

8. Any Holy Spirit school child left after school will be taken to our after- 

care program. 

We will reserve the right to detain children and call or find parents if they 

are without supervision.
