Year report 2006

Backgrounds
Don Bosco Youth-Net is the name of the international network of several European Salesian youth organisations.
The roots of the network lay in the different informal meetings that took place between several Don Bosco
youth organisations in Europe: exchanges, study visits, international training courses, an informative meeting on
EVS ... However, the satisfaction the participating organisations had from these meetings afterwards was rather
low. Most of the times the meetings resulted in texts and reports, but the partners actually wanted to do
something with the results. They had the idea that young people should be able to participate in all kinds of
international activities because of co-operation between organisations from different countries. This idea led to
further thinking about organising these different organisations into a formal structure.
In December 2000, under the impulse of Jeugddienst Don Bosco vzw, seven Don Bosco youth organisations
came together in Brussels for a first formal weekend of acquaintance. It became clear there were a sufficient
number of organisations wanting to start a network.
In 2001 we started working on setting up a formal network. In October Don
Bosco Youth-Net received the approval for this from Europe. By this approval, the
network received a one-year grant for their development. The official start was
10 th October 2001. Since the 14 th of August 2004 we have been officially
recognised by the Belgian government as an international non-profit organisation.
On the 11 th of November 2005 Don Bosco Youth-Net was elected as an
observer member in the European Youth Forum.

Aims & Actions
Within the heritage of Don Bosco, the partners of Don Bosco Youth-Net strive together to realize the following
aims:
At first it is important for us to bring young people across Europe and the world together, to take part in
youth activities that are linked with the style of working through the spirit of Don Bosco. We want to organize
international initiatives that contribute to the full development of young people. It is necessary thereby to
broaden the opportunities for young people who are, by reasons of various kinds, excluded from these kind of
activities.
Furthermore we strive for a profound exchange of information,
ideas and experiences between the different partners. We want
to facilitate contact, and deepen the understanding between the
member organisations so more joint activities can take place.
This is realised through weekends, the development of a website
and coordination from the international secretariat.
And last, but not least, we want to represent the voice of the
Don Bosco young people and defend their interests at an international
level.
To put these aims into practice, we developed our Master Plan
2006 – 2008 which can be downloaded from our website.
Human resources
The human resources play a key role in a network.
The more people involved, the stronger the network
becomes. On top of that we are a network of youth
organisations. Therefore we include as many young
people as possible in our structures. We are
confident that by giving young people the chances and
responsibilities of creating their own projects, we keep
Don Bosco Youth-Net young and relevant.
Overall 119.958 people are connected through our network.
924 employees and 8074 cater for 110.960
young people in 11 European countries. 92 % of
people connected through Don Bosco Youth-Net are
young people.
To maintain our human resources we put a lot of
stress on our services to the different actors inside the
network. The international secretariat plays a central
role in this. It facilitates the exchange of information
between the partner organisations, it supports the
volunteers in setting up international projects and it
promotes our international opportunities for young
people throughout Europe.
courses for young volunteers.
Activate yourself in DBYN
From the 13th -20th August 2006 35 young volunteers,
active in local Don Bosco organisations, from all over
Europe joined together for a Don Bosco Youth-Net the
training course in Benediktbeuern, Germany.
‘Activate yourself in DBYN’ aimed to train the
participants in converting ideas of activities into actual
projects in a Don Bosco style. Learning how to use
the Don Bosco Youth-Net framework and how to apply
for professional and financial backing from the EU
youth programme and from the council of Europe. It
was delivered through theory and practical work.
This included teams building activities, simulation games,
intercultural learning, working in national and
international teams and the days finished with a
chance for some quiet time for reflection.
After a successful week the participants we ready to
head back to their own countries, ready to use their
new skills to work together, and ready to start up
their own projects on international level.
‘Activate yourself in DBYN’ was financed by the Youth
Programme of the EU.
“THROUGH THE INTERNATIONAL TRAINING COURSE IN BENEDIKTBEUERN I WAS ENCOURAGED IN SETTING UP PROJECTS.
IT HELPED ME TO LEARN AND TO UNDERSTAND THE CONTEXT OF WRITING OF PROJECTS IN THE EDUCATIVE STYLE OF
DON BOSCO. AND I STILL KEEP IN MY HEART THE EXPERIENCE ON THE RIVER ILSE, IN WHICH WE WERE FLOATING. IT
WAS ALSO THE GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO MEET NEW PEOPLE, TO SHARE THE IDEAS, TO BUILD A TEAM - ONE FAMILY. I
HAVE ALREADY HAD THE FIRST EXPERIENCE IN SETTING UP A PROJECT (ONLY ON THE LOCAL LEVEL) BUT I USED SOME
KNOWLEDGE FROM THE COURSE.”
