FROM FATHER JOHN: “the Sacrifice of the Cross and its sacramental renewal in the Mass, which Christ the Lord instituted at
the Last Supper and commanded the Apostles to do in his memory, are one and the same, differing only in the manner of offering,
and that consequently the Mass is at once a sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, of propitiation and satisfaction.” (General Instruction
to the Roman Missal, no. 2)
Someone recently asked me a question about the Holy Trinity. It turned out to be a long and involved discussion so I thought it made
sense to give all the people of the parish some of the basics that the Church teaches in order to foster a better understanding of the
Holy Trinity.
The question of the Holy Trinity begins simply with this - how can God be three yet one? If we do the math, one plus one plus one
equals three; it does not equal one. Yet, we say that there is one God while we also say in the same breath that we believe that God
the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are all God; are one. How do we make sense of this?
We need to first look at what it means to be a person. The word person, in fact, the concept of person and the definition of person did
not exist prior to Christianity; prior to the early Church Fathers attempt to understand the Holy Trinity. The Church Fathers began by
saying that a person was “a specific instance of a collectivity.” What they meant by this is that a human person is defined as a specific
instance of all those instances that together we call the human race. But, they came to realize that a human person is much more
than that. A human person has to be more than “a specific instance of a collectivity” because we are created by God, in the image
and likeness of God, and because you are loved by God. Therefore, God, as person, has to be more than that as well. The one thing
that stands out when we examine the human person is the face. All of our faces are different and they are what we use to identify
who a human person is. The face shows uniqueness and it is the one thing that is completely unique to each human person. Therefore,
the Fathers defined a human person as a “carrier of uniqueness”.
There are two aspects of the person; there is the what-ness of the person and the unfolding of the what-ness which I like to think of as
the who-ness of the person. What I mean by this is that there are aspects of each of us that define what we are - a human person, a
member of the category of human persons. We have hands, heads, bodies, we have minds, intellect, we have a will, we have free
choice, we have the ability to use tools, etc. All these qualities define what we are - a human person. The unfolding of the what-ness,
or the who-ness, is what makes us unique, makes me different from each of you and vice versa. The individual person is the unique
thing that appears in reality.
Underlying this is the concept that there is something that makes a “thing” what it is in its own self apart from the general category
of things in which it resides. There is something a particular person has that makes the individual person unique when compared to
the collection of persons that exist. This is what gives us the sense that a person is a carrier of uniqueness. A person is not just the
gathering up of different qualities that are repeatable. Rather, there is an overall quality to the individual that signals that this is a
unique person.
If a person is the unique thing that appears in reality, then God can be three yet one. It is at the level of what-ness, that we see the one
-ness of God; that God is one. What-ness goes to what something is. For example, a chair has some qualities to it that could be called
chair-ness that define for us that some thing is a chair. We see a chair and know it’s a chair. It’s not an apple, it’s not a podium, it’s
not a human being, it’s not a table, it’s not just metal or wood or even a collection of metal and wood. It’s a chair. We don’t have to
think about it, analyze it or wonder about it. We immediately know it’s a chair because we recognize the chair-ness that the chair is
made of. We call this what-ness substance. There is a substance about us human persons, that make us immediately recognizable as
a human person. There is a what-ness about God that makes each person of the Holy Trinity immediately recognizable as God.
It is at the level of person that the uniqueness, or three-ness, of God appears in reality. At this level we see the who-ness of God. The
way in which God is three is on the level of the person, on the level of the person that carries the uniqueness of that particular person.
God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are three persons that each carry a uniqueness with them. They have appeared
to us as three different and unique persons. Jesus Christ has appeared in a way that is completely unique from the way in which the
Father or the Holy Spirit has appeared to us. Our Lord Jesus walked the earth, he took on a human nature, he died on the cross, he
rose from the dead and he ascended into heaven. He is unique in how he has appeared to us. The Father appeared to Moses at the
burning bush. The Holy Spirit appeared to us in fire and wind at the Pentecost. The uniqueness of the divine persons lies in their relationship
to one another, which we see in each person of the Holy Trinity.

Jane Roe – Now Pro-life
Norma McCorvey was the “Jane Roe” of the Roe vs. Wade
Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in 1973. Now,
she has become completely pro-life, and works to overturn
the decision she technically won. Fr. Frank Pavone, National
Director of Priests for Life, confirmed Norma as she entered
the Church in 1998. Norma says, “I thought that I wanted to
have an abortion with the baby that I was carrying, but I had
no idea that it would lead up to such a controversial issue. I
didn't know that there was two sides to the abortion issue. I
didn't attend any of the court proceedings. In fact that's why I
used the name Jane Roe because I didn't want my own personal
name to be involved in it. Since August 8, 1995, I have
been pro-life clear across the board. Abortion is totally
wrong. I was the Jane Roe of Roe vs. Wade,
but Jane Roe has been laid to rest.”
In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus concludes his teaching
about those who are “faithful and prudent stewards” with
that classic stewardship teaching: “Much will be required
of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be
demanded of the person entrusted with more.” Christian
stewards recognize that God is the ultimate source of their
gifts, talents, resources and aptitudes, and that God wants
them to use these varied gifts in his service. This week
might be a good time to reflect on our God-given gifts.
Are we using those gifts to serve the Lord? If Christ came
back to us unexpectedly tomorrow would we be able to
give a full accounting of how we have exercised stewardship
over these gifts?

Dear Lord,
Thank you for teaching me to be
generous as you have been generous
with me.
Thank you for showing me that all I
am and have are gifts from you and
that these gifts from you,
Lord, are meant to be shared. Show me
the joys of generosity. Help me to understand
that others, perhaps unknown to
me, depend on me for help.
Remind me that my world, my
parish, needs “Good Samaritans”
to heal the wounds of our times. Make
me a gift to others in your name. Amen.
