W. Backus Hospital makes on behalf of our 

community, focused attention on four 

areas has created great outcomes. 

During the past year, Backus demonstrated 

its continued commitment to these cornerstone 

principles: Quality. Technology. 

Services. Partnerships. This is a total 

team effort, requiring the dedication and 

expertise of every one of the 2,500 men 

and women who wear a Backus badge. 

I am proud to be part of that team, and 

even more proud that our community has 

demonstrably benefited from their efforts. 

In the pages that follow, we will highlight 

in greater detail your hospital’s efforts and 

performance, highlighting not only the 

accomplishments of 2008, but — more 

importantly — their impact on eastern 

Connecticut. 

I am honored to share with you a brief 

overview of each of these four key areas: 

QUALITY 

We start here because it is the basis of 

what Backus stands for, the reason we 

exist. In fact, “high-quality healthcare” is 

the root of our mission statement. This 

commitment to quality includes an 

intense focus on patient safety, high 

patient satisfaction, and top performance 

on rigorous external reviews. 

Investments this past year have demonstrated 

this commitment. 

■ Our new Director of Patient Safety is 

dedicated to assessing and continually 

improving processes, both routine and 

complex, to enhance the safety of those 

entrusted to our care. 

■ Our Comprehensive Community Hospital 

Cancer Center received a perfect score 

from the American College of Surgeons. 

■ And our new Emergency Department 

recorded the most patient visits in its 

history — and the highest possible 

patient satisfaction scores. 

These investments in quality are clearly 

having impact. 

TECHNOLOGY 

Quality healthcare requires the most 

sophisticated tools — and the very best, 

highly trained people to use them. Backus 

is a proven leader in researching and 

acquiring the best technology to improve 

our patients’ health, and this past year has 

been no exception. 

■ Technological advances during 2008 

have included a 64-slice computerized 

tomography (CT) scanner. This amazing 

imaging tool can produce up to 2,500 

detailed images of any organ in a matter of 

seconds, allowing radiologists to diagnose 

patients faster and more accurately. 

■ We have begun a complete automation 

of our laboratory. This system will be able 

to perform dozens of tests on a single 

patient’s sample, and locate any sample 

among hundreds. This will help doctors get 

better and faster results — and improve 

patient safety. 

■ After research and planning, Backus 

Hospital purchased a da Vinci surgical 

robot. This exciting technology allows our 

specially trained surgeons to perform even 

the most detailed surgical procedures with 

more precision, less invasively. This can 

reduce pain and infection risk, and lead to 

faster recoveries.

There is no doubt: at Backus, trained 

hands and leading-edge technology are 

making an impact. 

SERVICES 

At its core, Backus Hospital is a service 

organization. Patient-centered care must 

include health education, prevention 

programs and personalized treatment. 

Compassionate and informed caregivers 

provide a truly personal touch to patients 

and their loved ones in every healthcare 

circumstance. Providing that one-to-one 

care is an investment that sets Backus 

apart. 

■ This past year, we launched the region’s 

first Breast Health Patient Navigator 

Program, providing guidance for women 

who have received news of an abnormal 

mammogram. 

■ We created Backus Home Health Care, 

whose nurses, rehabilitation therapists, 

medical social workers, home health aides 

and homemakers provide care at patients’ 

homes. 

■ We established inpatient palliative care 

and stroke programs to address the needs 

of these specific patient populations. 

These and other Backus programs are 

having an impact on our community’s health. 

PARTNERSHIPS 

No single organization, regardless of its 

size and scope, can meet all the healthrelated 

needs of our changing region. 

In addition to proud partnerships with our 

Medical Staff and internal relationships 

with CONNCare and Backus Home Health 

Care, we are privileged to have many 

external partners. We are proud and privileged 

to count among them: 

■ Hospice Southeastern Connecticut, 

which provides comprehensive and 

compassionate end-of life care. 

■ United Community & Family Services, 

which works with us to offer free insurance 

eligibility screenings and medication assistance 

to uninsured patients seeking care 

in our Emergency Department. 

■ DaVita, which provides outpatient 

dialysis services next door to our Backus 

Outpatient Care Center. 

■ And other partners too numerous to 

mention with whom Backus works to 

improve health physically and mentally, 

and the wellbeing of the young and old. 

These mutual investments in our common 

mission are making eastern Connecticut 

a healthier place to live, work and do 

business. That’s what impact is all about. 

People are at the heart of our mission 

— the people we serve, and those who 

provide our services. It is my honor to 

work with a committed team of professionals 

in every area of our hospital, on 

campus and off. This is what we mean 

when we speak of “Team Backus.” 

That team is visible in our patient rooms 

and outpatient facilities; or working 

behind the scenes in places like Information 

Systems and Financial Services. They 

are keeping our patients educated and 

informed, our hospital grounds and 

facilities maintained, our services running 

effectively. In all, Team Backus comprises 

nearly 2,500 individuals — employees, 

Medical Staff, volunteers and Auxiliary. 

You can get a sense of their dedication 

and pride in Backus Hospital at events 

both celebratory (such as Cancer Survivors 

Day and our Employee Recognition Dinner) 

and solemn (our first memorial Physicians 

Tribute or Remembrance Day). When the 

Backus Nurses Alumnae Association 

marked its 100th anniversary this past 

year, graduates of our former nursing 

school traveled across the country to visit 

their hospital, and they marveled at its 

growth and status in the community. 

I am so honored to be part of this talented 

and hardworking team. This dedicated 

group makes the difficult possible. I am 

proud to report that even in these turbulent 

financial times, Backus Hospital has 

again achieved a positive operating margin. 

That is a fitting measure of our teamwork 

— and necessary to our commitment to 

make future investments in quality, 

technology, services and partnerships.

MPACT 

Strategy. Success. 

I look back on my three years as Chairman 

of the Board, and my 12 years of Board 

service, with a feeling of intense pride. 

This is certainly not based on any sense of 

personal accomplishment, but in what we 

have achieved together, for the betterment 

of our community: 

• Continued growth in programs, 

services and facilities enhancements 

• Success in meeting our community’s 

changing needs, through responsive 

education programs, new treatments 

and partnerships 

• Recognition from accrediting agencies 

and independent surveyors that we 

are exceeding standards — and, in 

significant areas like cancer care, 

emergency services and critical care 

— setting the standard. 

All of this gives me assurance that our 

forward movement will continue in the 

years ahead. I can say this because my 

Board service leaves me more confident 

than ever that Backus Hospital is built on a 

firm foundation — and that the bedrock 

of this foundation is patient-centered care. 

My tenure as Chairman began shortly after 

our groundbreaking for the $50-million 

BackusCare capital campaign project. It 

concludes as we again take up planning 

for enhancements that will propel Backus 

into the next decade — and beyond. 

It is difficult to convey to those who have 

not been directly involved how deeply 

Backus takes its commitment to solid 

planning — for strategy and services, for 

finances and facilities. The fact that these 

plans take place against a backdrop of 

ever-changing healthcare needs, regulations 

and reimbursements makes our 

hospital’s successes all the more remarkable. 

In the past year, we have also had to 

contend with the volatility of the financial 

markets. Thanks to the actions and clearheadedness 

of management, the hospital 

successfully refinanced a portion of its 

debt by reissuing its bonds, eliminating an 

unstable bond-swapping strategy and 

variable rate debt, and replacing it with a 

fixed rate — while maintaining our 

A+ rating. 

Clearly, the turmoil in the financial markets 

at the close of this year will make the 

always-challenging healthcare environment 

even more challenging. But Backus has 

weathered financial storms before, and 

our bedrock of prudent planning and 

strategic thinking will keep Backus strong. 

Earning the bond market’s support is 

significant. Earning the public’s support is 

essential. Backus has been, and remains, 

one of this region’s most vital organizations. 

The community’s continued philanthropic 

support for Backus will ensure a 

bright future that maintains and enhances 

one of the most important assets a 

community can have: a first-rate hospital that 

is there when you or a loved one needs it. 

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to 

the entire hospital family for your support 

and hard work. In the shifting sands of the 

healthcare landscape, Backus stands on 

the firm ground it does because of the 

dedication of our employees, Medical 

Staff, volunteers, Auxiliary, Alumnae, our

Life-saving teamwork 

Elimination of central line infections in Critical Care 

Patients who are hospitalized in Critical Care Units (CCUs) frequently require 

devices called “central lines” to provide the many medications and fluids they 

need. But central lines are prone to infections. The Institute for Healthcare 

Improvement estimates they cause 4,000 deaths in CCUs each year, nationwide.

Backus has successfully eliminated these CCU infections for more than a yearand-a-half. 

This required a full team effort from many departments and disciplines; 

an intensive review of data, medical literature and best practices; and the 

unwavering commitment of frontline caregivers. 

To recognize this life-saving achievement, the Connecticut Hospital Association 

awarded Backus the prestigious John D. Thompson Award for Excellence in the 

Delivery of Healthcare Through the Use of Data. 

Comprehensive cancer care — close to home 

A perfect score for Backus Cancer Services 

Backus Hospital’s Cancer Center was awarded the 

Commission on Cancer’s Outstanding Achievement 

Award — the only Connecticut hospital ever to do so. 

In fact, only 67 cancer centers in the entire nation earned 

this honor in 2008. 

Cancer patients and their loved ones can be assured in the 

knowledge that the cancer care at Backus is the best it can 

be. The American College of Surgeons’ Commission on 

Cancer awarded Backus a perfect score in its demanding 

accreditation survey, with nine out of nine commendations. 

The Commission also recognized Backus caregivers, and 

honored Mark Tramontozzi, MD, a surgeon on the Backus 

Medical Staff, as a champion for his service as the hospital’s 

Cancer Liaison Physician.

Better care in emergencies 

Patients say Backus is among the best in the nation 

No one likes to come to the Emergency Department. But medical emergencies 

are part of life, and providing urgent and emergent care is a major responsibility 

of a community hospital. 

This past year, our Emergency Department patients provided gratifying news: 

Not only are they satisfied with their care at Backus, they believe it is among the 

very best in the U.S. Patient survey results from the nation’s largest independent 

research firm place overall satisfaction with the Backus Emergency Department 

at the 99th percentile — the very top. This occurred during a year in which 

there were a record-setting 59,090 ED visits. 

As with everything in healthcare, providing great outcomes requires a team 

effort, with a constant focus on patient needs and process improvements. 

Teamwork in and out of our Emergency Department, data-driven results and 

compassionate care make a difference.

Safety, quality and satisfaction 

All three add up to patient-centered care 

Patient Safety is everybody’s business, but this past year Backus Hospital took 

additional strides to stress the importance of safety by adding a full-time 

Director of Patient Safety, Bonnie Thompson, APRN. 

There is no shortage of safety initiatives to oversee — from core measures to 

track the effectiveness of medical care like the treatment of heart attacks; to the 

implementation of national Patient Safety Standards; to basic precautions like 

hand hygiene for staff, patients and visitors. 

Backus knows safety, quality and the patient’s experience are intertwined, and 

we are proud of our culture of safety. Our reputation — and your health — 

depends on it.

INVESTMENT: Technology 

Technology is an incredible tool. But, as with all tools, people with 

special skills are necessary so these marvels can meet, and

When it comes to investments in medical technology — and the clinical 

expertise and compassion to make them matter — Backus Hospital 

delivers. Backus has been at the forefront of offering the very latest 

technology for eastern Connecticut. This means our patients have 

more options, access to leading edge care, and the potential for 

better outcomes. At Backus, technology is a true partner in care.

Minimally invasive surgery 

Human and machine come together in robotic surgery 

Backus is a leader in minimally invasive surgery. We continued this trend in 2008 

as we became the first hospital in eastern Connecticut to add robotic surgical 

technology — taking laparoscopic surgery to a new level.

The da Vinci surgical system is a major innovation in robotics technology. 

Initially, we are offering robot-assisted surgery as an option for some cancer 

patients. The device has additional applications for gynecological, colo-rectal 

and general surgical procedures. 

Robot-assisted surgery is less invasive than traditional “open” surgeries, and 

offers a more convenient option for many patients. It’s the operating room of 

the future — at Backus today. 

Life-saving technology 

Digital mammography 

We know that mammograms are considered to be the most effective way to 

detect early breast cancer. That’s why we installed the latest digital mammography 

technology on our main campus and at imaging centers in Norwichtown, 

Colchester and Groton. 

With digital mammography, radiologists are able to quickly review and 

manipulate higher-quality electronic 

images of the breast, using special 

high-resolution monitors. 

Because the images are stored electronically, 

digital mammography can be easily 

transmitted — from the Colchester 

Backus Health Center to radiologists at 

the main hospital campus, for example 

— and accessed by clinicians for future 

reference, without the need to manually 

retrieve films.

Convenience and imaging 

Radiology and women’s health services 

Year after year, Backus Hospital has added new diagnostic imaging resources, 

from 64-slice CT scan, to PET/CT scan technology, new MRIs and bone density 

scans. 

We are also very proud of our growing Backus Outpatient Care Center, a muchneeded 

medical facility offering easy access and convenient services right off 

Interstate 395 in Norwich. 

The two came together in 2008, as we began to renovate another section of the 

Norwich center — for radiology services. This project, scheduled to be complete 

in April 2009, will make some of our amazing diagnostic imaging technology 

even more accessible to patients, including digital mammography; ultrasound; 

vascular; X-ray; bone densitometry; fluoroscopy and CT scan. 

Patients benefit, too 

Backus puts technology in everyone’s hands 

Physicians, nurses and other staff members aren’t the only ones utilizing Backus 

technology. Now our patients can, too. 

Backus is the only hospital in the region to offer patients, their families and 

friends access to CarePages.com, healthcare’s largest social network. CarePages 

is a free personal, private web service to help patients, family and friends stay 

connected — before, during and after hospitalization. Users can share health 

updates, photos and supportive messages. CarePages also offers resources to 

help people cope with difficult and stressful situations. 

And Backus provides easy access to health information and trends on our 

website — including UpToDate.com. Visit www.backushospital.org, and click 

on the UpToDate.com icon to search for relevant, current and evidence-based 

patient information that is written by and approved by doctors.

INVESTMENT: Services 

Backus exists to serve. Every day, around the clock, on the hospital 

campus and off, the residents of eastern Connecticut rely on their 

community hospital to be there. It is not a responsibility we take lightly.

Healthcare services take many forms. Of course, traditional 

outpatient and inpatient care are how most people become familiar 

with Backus. But the hospital’s reach extends beyond the walls of 

its facilities. It includes educational events and health screenings; 

fund-raising to meet pressing healthcare needs; and advocacy on 

behalf of those who depend on us for care.

Backus is making a significant investment in breast health, which includes 

adding the latest in digital imaging technology, improving the early detection 

and treatment of cancer and adding a new program to help guide women with 

abnormal mammograms through the healthcare system.

Navigator program 

A primary beneficiary of the Backus Foundation’s fund-raising efforts is the 

Backus Breast Health Patient Navigator program, which began in 2008. The 

program helps guide patients during a frightening time in their lives — after 

they have received news of an abnormal mammogram. It is the only program 

of its kind in the region, and provides assistance from detection to diagnosis, 

with counseling, support and help setting up appointments. 

New services 

Palliative care and Stroke programs 

Stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability in the United States and the 

number three killer of Americans. Victims of stroke who are admitted to hospitals 

with an active stroke program have better clinical outcomes. 

That is why Backus Hospital has applied to be certified as a Primary Stroke 

Center by the Connecticut Department of Public Health. Backus is uniquely 

qualified, given its extensive experience using life-saving medical protocols for 

trauma care. Backus Hospital also has seven neurologists on active staff —the 

most of any hospital in eastern Connecticut. We expect to receive certification 

from the Connecticut Department of Public Health by early 2009. 

In addition, Backus is offering palliative care services. Palliative care involves 

goals established by the patient and family with the help of caregivers — 

physicians, nurses, social workers, pastoral care representatives and many others. 

Palliative care helps with symptoms like pain and difficulty breathing; shortens 

re-admission rates; lessens length of stay; reduces the overall cost of hospitalizations, 

and best of all, improves the quality of patient care.

Reaching out 

From border to shore 

Although our main hospital campus is in Norwich, the community we serve 

extends from the shoreline to the Rhode Island border and into Windham 

County. We continue to strategically add programs and services beyond the 

four walls of the hospital. 

To our north, along the Interstate 395 corridor, we added a new blood drawing 

station in the Moosup section of Plainfield. The Backus Plainfield Medical Center 

offers convenient access for the residents of Windham County. 

To the west, we added new diagnostic imaging services at our Colchester 

Backus Health Center, including new MRI technology, digital mammography and 

bone density scanning. Two primary care physicians, who are Backus Medical 

Staff members, established offices in Colchester. 

We also unveiled a new regional service — Backus Home Health Care. It offers 

skilled nursing services; physical, occupational and speech therapies; medical 

social workers and home health aides. The agency also provides specialized 

programs for wound care, behavioral health, diabetic and cardiac telemonitoring. 

Community education 

At the core of what we do 

Backus has a strong reputation for its ongoing commitment to community 

health education. While our Mobile Health Resource Center is one of the more 

visible symbols of this, it is only one of many ways we communicate preventative 

health measures and provide 

screenings to those who need them. 

During the past year, thousands of 

people were helped by our cholesterol 

screenings, prostate screenings, 

blood pressure screenings and 

educational lectures that promote 

wellness and better quality of life.

INVESTMENT: Partnerships 

“Continuum” is one of those words rarely used outside the realm of 

science. But it has real social implications. Providing an interconnected 

system of care requires planning and coordination with many 

community stakeholders.

Backus Hospital is proud to be part of these many partnerships — 

participating whenever possible, spearheading whenever necessary. 

The overarching goal is to provide eastern Connecticut residents with 

great care. That includes improving access, providing leadership and 

making pieces of the healthcare puzzle fit together seamlessly. 

OUTCOMES: 

Out of tragedy, a safer community 

Partnership puts AEDs in Norwich schools 

An automated external defibrillator (AED) might have saved 15-year-old Larry 

Pontbriant’s life. Thanks to the tireless dedication of the Norwich athlete’s 

parents, and the help of Backus, AEDs are now available in Norwich public 

schools. Backus Foundation provided matching funding for the Larry Pontbriant 

Athletic Safety Fund, and purchased 10 AEDs for use in the city’s schools.

Just as important, the region’s awareness about these devices, and the number 

of people who have received training in using them, have increased as well. 

Backus partnered with American Ambulance Service to provide a community 

class on AED use and CPR training. Ninety people took part in the free, 

hands-on training. 

It takes a community 

Providing access, improving outcomes 

Providing care is only one part of offering health services. Increasing access to 

that care is also important. That is why Backus Hospital and United Community 

& Family Services are partners in the Access to Care Program, which provides an 

Access to Care Specialist in the Backus Hospital Emergency Department. 

The Access to Care Program provides 

free insurance eligibility screenings 

and assistance in obtaining lifesaving 

medications to uninsured 

patients seeking care in the Backus 

Hospital Emergency Department. 

The program has a simple goal: 

connecting people who need 

healthcare with a medical home 

and community-based resources.

Caring for moms — and Mother Earth 

‘Green’ initiatives focus on environment 

It takes tons of materials to operate a hospital every day. For the past year, 

Backus has been focusing on reducing waste and increasing recycling. 

Encouraged by the Backus Green Team — a group of employees from many 

departments — Backus has been looking at every area with an eye toward 

being environmentally friendly. 

We have successfully reduced the amount of printed paper, increased the use 

of recycled paper (this Annual Report, for instance, is our first to be printed on 

recycled paper fiber), and improved recycling efforts. Employees who use the 

Green Team’s refillable mugs even get a discount on their coffee in the cafeteria 

— and cut down the use of disposable cups. 

Perhaps most significantly, we have made major advances in the disposal of 

pharmaceutical waste. All Backus pharmaceuticals that need to be discarded 

are handled by Stericycle, the national leader in the monitored collection, treatment 

and disposal of medical waste. The firm provides containers for the disposal 

of pharmaceuticals, picks them up and safely treats and disposes of them. 

That’s good for the environment, and for public safety.

Improvement — collaborations of all sorts, with partners down the street and

Auxiliary 

For the past 14 years, I’ve been a proud 

member of Backus Auxiliary. But during the 

past two years, when it has been my honor 

to serve as Auxiliary President, I have developed 

a deeper appreciation for the impact 

this organization has on our hospital, and

Here are just a few examples: 

■ We have helped build a better Backus. 

Through our commitment of a five-year 

pledge totaling $600,000, the Backus Auxiliary 

was one of the largest donors to our 

hospital’s most extensive facilities enhancement 

project ever. The new spaces and 

new technologies offered, and the facilities 

provided to our hospital’s talented staff, are 

improving the quality of care, and the 

quality of life, for our region’s residents. 

■ We are giving tomorrow’s caregivers a 

head start. The Auxiliary provides scholarships 

to young men and women who are 

pursuing healthcare careers. This past year, 

we increased the amount by $2,000 — 

making a total of $6,000 available for up to 

three promising scholarship recipients 

each year. This is the sort of investment in 

the future that makes me proud to be a 

Backus Auxilian. 

■ We improve the patient experience. 

Dedicated volunteers devote their handiwork 

to help make a hospital stay or a 

medical procedure more comforting. Our 

patients are comforted with after-surgery 

camisoles and cure-chiefs (hand-sewn 

head dressings) for chemotherapy patients; 

tray favors cheer patients during the holidays; 

colorful surgical caps brighten the 

faces of pediatric patients. Our File of Life 

card — a handy place to keep emergency 

medical information — is an important 

patient safety tool, and an important Auxiliary 

undertaking. The unseen hand of the 

Auxiliary is there — helping to make 

Backus the welcoming, comforting 

hospital it is. 

■ We fulfill our pledge with pride — 

and fun. Our vendor sales are popular with 

hospital staff, as well as visitors. The reputation 

of the Backus Gift Shop is known far 

beyond the walls of the hospital; it has 

truly developed into a community boutique 

shop, filled with interesting and 

unique items. And, of course, our annual 

mini golf tournament, which just celebrated 

its fifth year, continues to grow more 

successful and more fun. 

The impact of the Auxiliary can’t be measured 

in dollars raised or volunteer hours 

alone. Its true measure is the support and 

dedication of our Auxilians, who cherish 

their hospital and give unselfishly of their 

time and talent. 

It has been an honor to serve as Auxiliary 

President, and to witness that dedication 

and devotion first-hand. I extend congratulations 

and best wishes to incoming 

President Elizabeth (Betty) Trudelle, and 

my sincere thanks to hospital staff and 

volunteers, Medical Staff, Auxiliary officers 

and chairs of our Standing Committees, 

the hospital’s Board of Trustees, administration,

Devotion. Community. 

OUTCOME 

It has been a privilege to serve as President 

of the Medical Staff for the past two 

years. As I conclude my term, I wish to 

commend Backus physicians for all they 

have accomplished in concert with our 

hospital on behalf of our community. 

Truly, we have made an impact. 

■ Advances in technology. Physicians 

have played a key role in the advancement 

of the hospital’s electronic medical record. 

Backus was an early leader in this technology, 

and we are fortunate to have the 

dedication and expertise of the Physicians 

Advisory Committee, which works with 

the hospital’s Information Systems staff, to 

implement further enhancements. 

■ New surgical techniques and procedures. 

Hardly a month passes without the 

advent of some new medical advance that 

our physicians are using to help patients 

get the care they need more efficiently 

and safely. This past year, in particular, 

has seen many advances in minimally 

invasive surgical procedures. These 

laparoscopic techniques can reduce pain, 

promote quicker healing and provide 

safer outcomes. 

■ Highly trained Medical Staff members. 

A wide variety of primary care and specialty 

surgeons have joined the Backus Medical 

Staff in the past year, offering much-needed 

services such as urology, breast reconstruction, 

thoracic and general surgery, 

joint replacement and more. 

■ A commitment to patient satisfaction. 

The nation’s first public report on 

patients’ perception of their care was 

made available this past March — and we 

are proud that Backus performed better 

than the state and national averages. 

■ Recognition for quality care. Providing 

exceptional care is its own reward. But it’s 

still gratifying when the hospital receives 

external recognition for its efforts in 

patient care. Such was the case this past 

year, with top commendations from the 

American College of Surgeons’ Commission 

on Cancer, Press Ganey Associates 

for patient satisfaction in the Emergency 

Department, and the Connecticut 

Hospital Association for life-saving efforts 

in the Critical Care Unit. I salute all 

physicians and hospital staff who made 

these achievements possible. 

The Medical Staff is comprised of nearly 

300 men and women from diverse backgrounds 

and locations, united in our 

commitment to our patients. On their 

behalf, I wish to thank all those who 

support us every day — volunteers, 

employees, Administration and the Board 

of Trustees. Together, we make a great 

impact on this region’s quality of life. 

Finally, I offer my very best wishes to 

Stephen Briggs, MD, as incoming Medical 

Staff President. It has been a pleasure to 

work with Dr. Briggs as Vice President, 

and I have confidence he will provide 

strong and insightful leadership.

Our community makes an impact on 

improving its quality of life through donations 

to the Backus Foundation. In 2008, 

that impact was produced by more people, 

and felt in more ways than ever. Every 

donor dollar enhanced Backus Hospital’s 

reach and ability to strengthen quality, 

technology, services and partnerships. 

CIRCLES OF CARE: THOUSANDS 

SUPPORT HEALTH INITIATIVES 

Many in the community participated in the 

Backus Breast Health Initiatives. From 

corporate and generous individual gifts, to 

donations of $1 at dozens of local businesses, 

eastern Connecticut truly stepped up to 

support Backus Hospital’s improvements in 

breast cancer care. Nearly 20,000 Circles of 

Care were purchased, and more than 

$300,000 was raised toward the initiatives. 

Each dollar provided for the Breast Health 

Patient Navigator program, and important 

services that include health education, and 

the advancement of early detection and 

improved treatment options. 

ANNUAL GIVING: SUPPORTING THE 

HOSPITAL’S ONGOING NEEDS 

Annual gifts from individuals, businesses, 

service organizations and foundations are 

the cornerstone of philanthropic support 

for the Backus Foundation. This year, the 

1,734 donors who supported our Annual 

Fund and the annual Backus golf tournament 

helped launch and sustain a new and 

needed program: the Backus Breast Health 

Patient Navigator. This program — combined 

with Backus Hospital’s medical 

expertise and its standard-setting cancer 

center — is really making a difference in 

women’s health in eastern Connecticut. 

GIFTS OF LEGACY: WORKING TODAY TO 

IMPROVE OUR TOMORROWS 

Chuck Seeman, President and CEO of United 

Community & Family Services, was 

honored in September with the fourth 

annual Backus Heritage Award, celebrating 

those who champion gifts of legacy. Mr. 

Seeman and his family are exemplars in 

their support of our community hospital, 

through annual gifts, legacy gifts and capital 

campaign support. The Legacy Society 

continues to grow, and Backus Foundation 

is honored to recognize those who have 

informed us of their intentions to leave a 

gift to Backus through their estate plans or 

creative gift planning. 

FOUNDATION EVENTS: 

MAKING FRIENDS AND RAISING FUNDS 

Events provide opportunities to celebrate, 

socialize and offer support. Our alwayspopular 

golf tournament in June marked its 

27th successful year. The Physicians Tribute, 

which raised $50,000 in honor of the late 

Bernard Podurgiel, MD, provided an 

opportunity to celebrate his memory and 

commemorate a plaque in his honor. 

Numerous community partners, such as 

Connecticut Sun and Hard Rock Café at 

Foxwoods, hosted events that raised funds 

and awareness about Backus. And the Pink 

Party celebration, in support of our Breast 

Health Initiatives, is being planned for this 

coming Spring. 

A WORD ABOUT THE ECONOMY: 

HEALTHCARE IS NOT A LUXURY 

We have all been buffeted by the faltering 

economy this past year, and the near-term 

financial future looks difficult, at best. 

Backus Foundation is by no means exempt 

from the effects of an economic downturn. 

But quality healthcare is not a luxury. In fact, 

during tough financial times, our hospital’s 

role as a vital community safety net 

becomes even more necessary. 

In its 115 years, Backus Hospital has seen 

good economic times and bad. Prudent 

financial decisions, always driven by the 

community’s needs, have allowed Backus to 

remain strong and responsive. 

We are honored that we have earned our 

community’s trust, and we value every 

donor’s gift. Your gift to Backus has real 

impact — on our community’s health 

today, and into the future.
