■ spray paint (or other paint): gray,<br />
red and white; other colors<br />

■ several foam sheets, 1/4-inch<br />

■ reference books on deep-sea<br />
hydrothermal vents<br />
Questions to Begin<br />
■ What is a hydrothermal or deep-sea vent?<br />
■ What’s special about the communities living at hydrothermal vents? How are they different from<br />
communities living in other places on the deep sea?<br />
Procedure<br />
1. Have students bring in pictures (from magazines), study pictures you’ve brought in, or view a<br />
video of deep-sea hydrothermal vents.<br />
2. Using pictures for reference, have students make deep-sea organisms — pink fish, white crabs,<br />
rosy tubeworms, etc. — out of construction paper. As they cut out organisms, have them identify<br />
