Asian Festival And
Charlotte Dragon Boat Festival
The first Asian Festival was
at Marshall Park in uptown
Charlotte. The purpose of
the Festival is to unite all Asian
communities in the Charlotte
area to celebrate the Asian-
Pacific Heritage Month of May.
Attendance in Festival continued
to grow in the ensuing years,
drawn by the colorful and diverse
cultural presentations, food and
retail selections. After a few years
at the Wachovia Atrium, the Asian
Festival moved to its current
location at Ramsey Creek Park,
and, together with the Dragon
Boat Festival Race, continues to
grow as the Carolinas’ premier
Asian cultural event.
The Asian Festival is a familyfriendly
festival that is designed
to celebrate the traditions and
unique Asian-Pacific cultures
represented in the greater
Charlotte region. The organizers
hope that in addition to providing
an opportunity for local Asians
and Asian-Americans to celebrate
their heritage that the festival will
serve as a cultural bridge to the
community at large.
The Real Mayberry In A
Vintage Squad Car
# 4
Mayberry, the idyllic hometown made famous on The Andy
Griffith Show, has long been considered a fictional place,
but the real Mayberry does exist. The TV-show town was
based on Griffith’s hometown of Mount Airy. From Floyd’s Barber
Shop to fried pork chop sandwiches, Mount Airy has embraced its
role as the inspiration for Mayberry. The town features year-round
attractions such as the Andy Griffith Museum, Andy Griffith
Playhouse and Squad Car Tours that point out key locations
such as the house where Andy was raised, which is available
for overnight stays. The town
goes all Andy Griffith Show
every year for Mayberry Days,
a three-day festival featuring
parades, celebrities, music and
more. In fact, the town is so
opportunities for car lovers, spouses, and
family. All events are open to the public.
Friday, features the repeat of last
year’s popular day drive (benefiting
the Literacy Council of Highlands,
the 2015 charity). This year’s One Lap
of the Mountains will provide a full
day of driving in the beautiful NC
mountains. The day will include a light
breakfast at Creekside, a lunch stop
midway, and return to Highlands late
afternoon. That evening is the special
Welcome Party, Motoring to Motown,
with meal featuring Bar-B-Que, hosted
by the Literacy Council of Highlands,
featuring City Street Band.
Saturday, features the aforementioned
Classic Car Show. Cars to view and
activities for old and young alike, will
fill the day. On Saturday evening, we
will have an evening to relax with
the Saturday Night Social – Buffet
and the Big Screen (party and dinner
at SweeTreats restaurant, followed
by a movie at an automotive venue).
The ever popular Sunday Road Rally,
proven a “must” in years past, will
give the opportunity to drive some
great roads (at a moderate pace), have
a great brunch and return to The Ugly
Dog Pub, Highlands, for some “war
stories” and awards.
This year’s festival will feature,
in addition to many outstanding
cars, some very rare and special
motor vehicles, including vintage
motorcycles. Already, committed are
two of the fastest production vehicles
of the early 50’s, just to name a few.
Registrants from as far away as
Mississippi and Maryland, will be
present with their cars, and this is an
opportunity to see cars that generally
only appear in magazines.
