As is the case with most urban natural areas,<br />

portions of Crosby Park are degraded by recreational use,<br />

erosion and the invasion of exotic species. It features<br />

extensive hiking and biking trails, marsh ponds,<br />

wildflowers and outstanding bird watching. Past<br />

farming activities also contributed to degradation.<br />

Crosby Park was originally staked out as farmland in<br />

1858 by Thomas Crosby and was farmed by a succession<br />

of families until the 1960s when it was purchased<br />

for the Saint Paul Division of Parks and Recreation.<br />

Funding for the project comes from the Capitol<br />

Region Watershed District; City of Saint Paul Division<br />

of Parks and Recreation; <strong>Great</strong> <strong>River</strong> <strong>Greening</strong>,<br />

through a Carolyn Foundation grant and through<br />

funds from the Environmental and Natural Resources<br />

Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative<br />

Commission on Minnesota Resources; as well as the<br />

NPS grant.<br />

Project funding also provides for <strong>Great</strong> <strong>River</strong><br />

<strong>Greening</strong> to conduct a focused analysis of bluff erosion<br />

and nature trail deterioration.<br />

<strong>Greening</strong> announces four new board members<br />

FOUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS ADD GREATLY TO GREENING’S<br />

reputation, and business and technical expertise. We are<br />

pleased to welcome Susan Galatowitsch, Ann McMillan,<br />

Kristine Sundberg and Alvin-o Williams. Each brings a<br />

unique set of skills and background, and all are incredible<br />

assets to the organization.<br />

Susan Galatowitsch is an Associate Professor of<br />

Horticultural Science and holds a joint appointment in<br />

the Department of Landscape Architecture at the<br />

University of Minnesota. She has a Ph.D. in Ecology and<br />

Evolutionary Biology from Iowa State University as well<br />

as an M.S. in Botany. Sue brings to <strong>Great</strong> <strong>River</strong> <strong>Greening</strong><br />

a nationally-recognized expertise in restoration and ecology<br />

with a particular emphasis in wetland restoration.<br />

One of the many assets Ann McMillan brings to<br />

<strong>Greening</strong> is her Landscape Architecture background.<br />

Ann has an M.S. in Landscape Architecture from the<br />

University of Minnesota. She has served on the boards of<br />

the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and the Saint Paul<br />

Garden Club, and was an early supporter of <strong>Greening</strong>.<br />

She currently serves on the University of Minnesota<br />

College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture<br />

national board.<br />

Kristine Sundberg joins <strong>Greening</strong> with more than<br />

20 years of communications, investor relations and<br />

public affairs achievement. Kristine has an M.S. in<br />

Environmental Studies from the University of Illinois.<br />

She is currently Executive Counsel for the Sage Group, a<br />

full-service public relations, marketing communications,<br />

investor relations and communications firm in<br />

Minneapolis. Among her clients are AT&T; Global<br />

Bridge, Inc.; and Lee Financial.<br />

In Alvin-o Williams, <strong>Great</strong> <strong>River</strong> <strong>Greening</strong> gains<br />

considerable experience in both law and business<br />

management expertise. He has a B.S. from the<br />

University of Minnesota and a J.D. from Hamline<br />

University. Alvin-o is co-owner of Castaneda Williams,<br />

Ltd., a successful Edina advertising agency that provides<br />

total business solutions to clients. Among his clients are<br />

Boston Scientific, Target Corporation and Minnesota<br />

Minority Supplier Development Council.<br />
