83-year-old granny Katrien Bel is one
badass boss in Kralingse Veer,
Rotterdam. Bel was originally charged in
February after authorities found 45
pounds of hydroponically grown
marijuana in her underwear drawer in
her home. Those charges were
withdrawn because the police officers
who busted her home weren’t in
possession of a search warrant.
Authorities decided to continue their
investigation, observing the granny
closely. After nearly three weeks of
observation, police had a strong enough
case and busted the granny again: this
time for selling space cakes in her
‘Hippy-Happy’ food truck.
The observation didn’t only solve one case, as it
solved two. Police finally discovered the reason
for the increasing amount of accidents in and
around Kralingse Veer, cause being Bel’s
muffins. Rotterdam police and Cappelle police
had been dealing with cases of disorientated
individuals, public nudity, car accidents and
violent panic attacks, ever since the end of
December 2014. Police knew that the cause was
consumption of illegal substances, but they
couldn’t find out who or what was the source.
The link between those cases and the charges
made against Bel, was made by a police officer
who consumed one of Bel´s best-selling muffins
himself: ‘Blue Berry Highs’.
He explained: “I had no idea it was a space cake.
After eating the muffin everything went
downhill and I ended up naked walking along
the street. I only got to my senses when my
colleagues picked me up. Pretty embarrassing.”
Containing little over 2 ounces of marijuana per
muffin, consumers felt the effects after half an
hour. Katrien Bel stated she sold more than 100
pounds of marijuana in all of her baked goods.
Her neighbour Jacques Vries said “She’s always
happy, always chill, always puffing on those
huge cigars and dancing in her backyard. I
should have known she was on pot!”.
Rotterdam police, who took the food truck in to
custody, is figuring a way of destroying all the
space cakes. Nanna Bel awaits trial at home,
probably whilst having a cup of tea and eating a
‘Blue Berry High’ muffin.
