your child’s Chemistry teacher for the 2011-2012 school year. I look
forward to having a successful year together and would like to take this

academic success. Included in this letter is a list of supplies, classroom
expectations, and grading policies which I have reviewed with your child.

Course Description:
Chemistry students will conduct lab investigations, use
proper scientific methods, and learn to make informed decisions
using critical thinking and scientific problem solving skills.
Students will study a variety of topics that include: characteristics
of matter; energy transformations during physical and chemical
changes; atomic structure; periodic table of elements; behavior of
gases; bonding; nuclear fusion and fission; oxidation-reduction
reactions; chemical equation; properties of solutions; and
chemical reactions. Students will develop models of the natural
world and understand the limitations of those models. This
course is part of the recommended high school plan. This course
also includes additional curriculum including advanced
laboratory, independent study and individual project
assignments.
Instructional Resources: Addison-Wesley Chemistry 5 th Edition and Internet sources
defined by the instructor.
Tutoring Schedule: Mondays, Tuesdays, & Thursdays
4:20 p.m. – 5:20 p.m.

1 Scientific or Graphing Calculator (TI-30Xa ~$10 at Walgreens)
Pencils and Blue/Black Pens

1 Binder or Folder w/pockets (to keep up with graded assignments)
Grading Policy: Homework 20%
Daily Work 40%
Tests/Projects 40%
All classwork is due at the end of the class period on the day assigned, unless
stated otherwise by Ms. Dotsy. Homework is due at the beginning of the class
period when the tardy bell rings. Late work will not be accepted!
Absent/Make Up Work: In the event of an absence, it is the student’s
responsibility to request missed assignments and tests. The student is given
one class period for each day absent to complete assignments.

The student understands the principles of ideal gas behavior, kinetic molecular theory, and the conditions
that influence the behavior of gases.

The student understands and can apply the factors that influence the behavior of solutions.
Acids and Bases
The student understands and can apply the factors that influence the behavior of solutions.
Nuclear Chemistry
The student understands the basic processes of nuclear chemistry.
