<strong>Awakened</strong> <strong>Life</strong> is the center of The Open Source, a network of<br />
Zen communities in the western United States. <strong>Awakened</strong> <strong>Life</strong><br />
emphasizes companionship on the way, authentic American<br />
expressions of Zen, and the confluence of koans and<br />
creativity. It sponsors a year-round schedule of weekly, oneday,<br />
weekend, and weeklong programs and retreats centered<br />
on meditation, koans, and community life.<br />
Joan Sutherland, Roshi is a Zen teacher in<br />
the koan tradition and the founder of<br />
<strong>Awakened</strong> <strong>Life</strong> and The Open Source. She<br />
is a writer whose work was recently chosen<br />
for Best Buddhist Writing 2009 and a<br />
translator from Chinese and Japanese. She<br />
is involved in a re-imagining of the koan<br />
tradition and is deeply interested in what<br />
becomes possible when ways of meditation<br />
and inquiry developed over thousands of<br />
years become sources of creativity and awakening in peoples’<br />
lives today. She is currently working on a philosophical<br />
memoir and new translations of three major koan collections.<br />
