The <strong>Library</strong> announces <strong>the</strong> creati<strong>on</strong> of an<br />

<strong>on</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e Electi<strong>on</strong> 2012 guide to answer questi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

that many voters have about <strong>the</strong> upcom<strong>in</strong>g<br />

electi<strong>on</strong>. What do <strong>the</strong> track<strong>in</strong>g polls say<br />

today? Where can you vote early? How do<br />

<strong>the</strong> candidates stand <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> issue of alternative<br />

energy sources? The f<strong>in</strong>ancial crisis? The Iraq<br />

war? What is <strong>the</strong> electoral college and why is<br />

it important? What is <strong>the</strong> “Bradley effect”?<br />

You can f<strong>in</strong>d answers to all <strong>the</strong>se questi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

and more at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Library</strong>’s Electi<strong>on</strong> 2012 guide<br />

Catalogers Are Busy<br />

Because <strong>the</strong> <strong>Library</strong>’s budget for acquir<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ted books is lower than usual this year,<br />

some people have w<strong>on</strong>dered what catalogers<br />

are do<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>stead of catalog<strong>in</strong>g new books.<br />

Fortunately, we have many o<strong>the</strong>r materials to<br />

catalog!<br />

One of our most important projects is <strong>the</strong><br />

title-by-title catalog<strong>in</strong>g of older <strong>NMSU</strong> Agricultural<br />

Extensi<strong>on</strong> publicati<strong>on</strong>s. The catalog<br />

<strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> we create is reused as metadata<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Agricultural Extensi<strong>on</strong> Publicati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Digitizati<strong>on</strong> Project. In additi<strong>on</strong>, we have<br />

<strong>NMSU</strong> dissertati<strong>on</strong>s and <strong>the</strong>ses, gift materials,<br />

Special Collecti<strong>on</strong>s materials and new e-books<br />

to catalog.<br />

2<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, we are c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g our work <strong>on</strong> catalog<strong>in</strong>g<br />

all of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Library</strong>’s pre-1976 Federal<br />

government documents, a large project that<br />

we will be work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong> foreseeable future.<br />

As you can see, we have a lot <strong>on</strong> our<br />

plates, even without new books to catalog!—<br />

<strong>Library</strong> Cancels 261<br />

High Cost Low Use Journals<br />

In May 2012 <strong>the</strong> <strong>Library</strong> announced that it would be cancell<strong>in</strong>g 276 journal titles <strong>in</strong> order to<br />

avoid a budget shortfall. University faculty c<strong>on</strong>tested <strong>the</strong> cancellati<strong>on</strong> of 14 of <strong>the</strong> 276 titles,<br />

not<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> high research value of each. In August 2012 <strong>the</strong> University Adm<strong>in</strong>istrati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>tervened<br />

and provided much-needed relief to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Library</strong>’s dim<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g materials budget. Specifically,<br />

<strong>on</strong>e time c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s of $150,000 from <strong>the</strong> President’s Office and $50,000 from <strong>the</strong> Provost’s<br />

Office will reduce <strong>the</strong> number of serial titles slated for cancellati<strong>on</strong> this December and will<br />

also allow <strong>the</strong> <strong>Library</strong> to c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ue purchas<strong>in</strong>g requested books throughout <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g year.<br />

Due to <strong>the</strong> generosity of <strong>the</strong> University Adm<strong>in</strong>istrati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Library</strong> has reduced its cancellati<strong>on</strong><br />

list to 261 titles for a total cancellati<strong>on</strong> amount of $167,935. These 261 journal titles show<br />

low use (10 or fewer uses), or no use, or cost $100 or more per use. In <strong>the</strong>se times of<br />

budgetary austerity <strong>the</strong> <strong>Library</strong> must make difficult choices and must limit its subscripti<strong>on</strong>s<br />

to publicati<strong>on</strong>s of high use and/or low cost. A complete list of all titles slated for cancellati<strong>on</strong><br />

can be found at http://nmsu.libguides.com/BudgetCuts.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r library materials budgets were negatively impacted this year, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> book budget<br />

that experienced a 64% reducti<strong>on</strong>. Given current fund<strong>in</strong>g realities, <strong>the</strong> <strong>NMSU</strong> <strong>Library</strong> will<br />

c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ue to face reducti<strong>on</strong>s every year, as its budget rema<strong>in</strong>s static, its external revenue<br />

streams decl<strong>in</strong>e and serials subscripti<strong>on</strong> prices c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ue to <strong>in</strong>crease annually by 4% or more.<br />

This fall <strong>New</strong> Mexico voters will have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to support libraries through <strong>the</strong> successful<br />

passage of <str<strong>on</strong>g>GO</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>B<strong>on</strong>d</str<strong>on</strong>g> B. This b<strong>on</strong>d <strong>in</strong>itiative will provide $9 milli<strong>on</strong> ($3 milli<strong>on</strong> each to public,<br />

academic and school libraries statewide) for <strong>the</strong> acquisiti<strong>on</strong> of library materials, and $700,000<br />

to tribal libraries for <strong>the</strong> purchase of library materials and c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>. The <strong>Library</strong> is<br />

projected to receive approximately $386,090 from <str<strong>on</strong>g>GO</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>B<strong>on</strong>d</str<strong>on</strong>g> B which will help support library<br />

collecti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

The <strong>Library</strong> thanks <strong>the</strong> <strong>NMSU</strong> community for participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this year’s materials budget<br />

reducti<strong>on</strong> process. We value <strong>the</strong> time and energy this community c<strong>on</strong>tributed to <strong>the</strong> project.<br />

The <strong>Library</strong> strives to fulfill its missi<strong>on</strong> of support<strong>in</strong>g and enhanc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g, research<br />

and outreach missi<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> University. For more <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tact Susan Beck, Collecti<strong>on</strong><br />

Scholarly Communicati<strong>on</strong>s Workshop<br />

Leads <strong>Library</strong> to Celebrate<br />

Open Access Week<br />

For <strong>the</strong> past several years <strong>the</strong> Associati<strong>on</strong> of College & Research Libraries has offered libraries<br />

<strong>the</strong> opportunity to sp<strong>on</strong>sor a workshop to provide <strong>the</strong>ir staff with <strong>in</strong>-depth <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong><br />

about <strong>the</strong> issues surround<strong>in</strong>g scholarly communicati<strong>on</strong>s. Libraries apply, and through a competitive<br />

process five are selected. Susan Beck and Paula Johns<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> <strong>NMSU</strong> <strong>Library</strong><br />

collaborated with Amy Jacks<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> University of <strong>New</strong> Mexico (UNM) <strong>on</strong> an applicati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

and were selected to co-host <strong>the</strong> “Roadshow Workshop: Scholarly Communicati<strong>on</strong>s: From<br />

Understand<strong>in</strong>g to Engagement” <strong>in</strong> Albuquerque <strong>on</strong> August 25.<br />

Twelve <strong>NMSU</strong> librarians jo<strong>in</strong>ed more than sixty o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>dividuals at <strong>the</strong> UNM c<strong>on</strong>ference<br />

center to 1) enhance <strong>the</strong>ir understand<strong>in</strong>g of scholarly communicati<strong>on</strong> as a system to manage<br />

<strong>the</strong> results of research and scholarly <strong>in</strong>quiry, 2) <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong>ir ability to exam<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>in</strong>itiate and<br />

support new models of scholarly communicati<strong>on</strong> such as research & social <strong>in</strong>teracti<strong>on</strong> models,<br />

3) learn how to select and cite key pr<strong>in</strong>ciples relevant to <strong>the</strong>ir own scholarly communicati<strong>on</strong><br />

plans and programs and 4) be able to identify c<strong>on</strong>crete acti<strong>on</strong>s to take back to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>in</strong>stituti<strong>on</strong>s and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir positi<strong>on</strong>s to help accelerate <strong>the</strong> transformati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> scholarly<br />

communicati<strong>on</strong> system.<br />

Stimulated by this experience to “br<strong>in</strong>g it home,” Paula and Susan developed a series of<br />

events to celebrate Open Access (OA) Week, October 22-28. While this was <strong>the</strong> first year <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>NMSU</strong> <strong>Library</strong> participated, OA Week has been marked <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>ally every October for <strong>the</strong><br />

past six years. The 2012 <strong>the</strong>me, “Set <strong>the</strong> Default to Open Access,” speaks to <strong>the</strong> movement’s<br />

<strong>in</strong>extricable l<strong>in</strong>k with scholarly communicati<strong>on</strong>s. OA encourages <strong>the</strong> development of new<br />

models of research dissem<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> made possible by <strong>the</strong> evoluti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Internet and digital<br />

artifacts. Events were planned to help promote an understand<strong>in</strong>g of OA and to <strong>in</strong>itiate a<br />

campus-wide discussi<strong>on</strong> about how OA can expand <strong>the</strong> distributi<strong>on</strong> of research results by<br />

leverag<strong>in</strong>g networked technology. OA also aims to reduce f<strong>in</strong>ancial pressure <strong>on</strong> libraries. The<br />

prevail<strong>in</strong>g model of provid<strong>in</strong>g patr<strong>on</strong>s access to scholarly communicati<strong>on</strong>s via ever more<br />

expensive subscripti<strong>on</strong>s means that libraries have seen <strong>the</strong>ir buy<strong>in</strong>g power dim<strong>in</strong>ish.<br />

The kickoff event was a webcast of “Perspectives <strong>on</strong> Open Access: Practice, Progress and<br />

Pitfalls.” This was a 90 m<strong>in</strong>ute five member panel discussi<strong>on</strong>, co-sp<strong>on</strong>sored by SPARC (Scholarly<br />

Publish<strong>in</strong>g and Academic Resources Coaliti<strong>on</strong>) and <strong>the</strong> World Bank. The World Bank, like<br />

<strong>the</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Institutes of Health and Nati<strong>on</strong>al Science Foundati<strong>on</strong>, mandates that all research<br />

carried out <strong>on</strong> its behalf be made freely accessible to <strong>the</strong> public. The next presentati<strong>on</strong> was<br />

“<strong>NMSU</strong> <strong>Library</strong> U Scholarly Communicati<strong>on</strong>s 101,” <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> basics of scholarly communicati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

and open access were presented.<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g this was “Introducti<strong>on</strong> to University Scholarly Communicati<strong>on</strong> Programs,” which<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>ed University-run scholarly communicati<strong>on</strong> programs, designed to facilitate <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease<br />

<strong>in</strong> accessibility, usability and impact of faculty research. EScience, viewed as fundamental<br />

to scientific progress <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> twenty-first century, was also explored. The f<strong>in</strong>al event<br />

had two parts: first, a presentati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> author rights and a comparis<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> impact factors<br />

of OA articles and journals versus those <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> traditi<strong>on</strong>al models. Sec<strong>on</strong>d was a panel of<br />

<strong>NMSU</strong> faculty members who have ei<strong>the</strong>r published <strong>in</strong> and/or edited OA and/or traditi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

journals. It was a successful start to engag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Library</strong> and <strong>the</strong> <strong>NMSU</strong> campus <strong>in</strong> th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

about ways of optimiz<strong>in</strong>g access to research.—Paula Johns<strong>on</strong>, Reference & Research Services<br />

The Informati<strong>on</strong> Desk staff often refers more<br />

complex or time <strong>in</strong>tensive questi<strong>on</strong>s to subject<br />

specialist librarians, many of whom are<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> RRS department. Subject specialists<br />

have greater knowledge of an assigned subject<br />

and are better equipped to answer more<br />

complex questi<strong>on</strong>s than o<strong>the</strong>r staff members.<br />

Often, <strong>the</strong>se referrals occur at <strong>the</strong> Informati<strong>on</strong><br />

Desk, but appo<strong>in</strong>tments are frequently<br />

made via email, ph<strong>on</strong>e or IM.<br />

When work<strong>in</strong>g with undergraduate and<br />

graduate students at <strong>the</strong> Informati<strong>on</strong> Desk,<br />

staff often refer <strong>the</strong>m to different campus<br />

resources such as <strong>the</strong> Student Success Center<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Writ<strong>in</strong>g Center. Community users<br />

of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Library</strong> are often referred to different<br />

departments such as Archives & Special<br />

Collecti<strong>on</strong>s to answer questi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> local<br />

or University history.<br />

The RRS Department’s Government Documents<br />

Unit also provides specialized reference<br />

services with a focus <strong>on</strong> <strong>New</strong> Mexico<br />

and U.S. government <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong>. The Reference<br />

Program and Instructi<strong>on</strong>al Program<br />

work <strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>juncti<strong>on</strong> with large undergraduate<br />

vides <strong>in</strong>sights <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> library professi<strong>on</strong> and encourages a better appreciati<strong>on</strong> of libraries and<br />

librarians <strong>in</strong> society.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> publisher, despite <strong>the</strong> stodgy stereotypes, libraries and librarians <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

can be quite funny. The spectrum of library humor from sources <strong>in</strong>side and outside <strong>the</strong><br />

professi<strong>on</strong> ranges from <strong>the</strong> subtle wit of <strong>the</strong> <strong>New</strong> Yorker to <strong>the</strong> satire of Mad. This exam<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong><br />

of American library humor over <strong>the</strong> past two hundred years covers a wide range of<br />

topics and spans <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uum between light and dark, from parodies to portrayals of<br />

libraries and <strong>the</strong>ir staffs as objects of fear.<br />

The book was recommended as a “must-have” by <strong>the</strong> May 15 <strong>Library</strong> History Buff blog.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to a review <strong>in</strong> C&RL <strong>New</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> book charts <strong>the</strong> largely unexplored territory of<br />

library wit and satire, both <strong>in</strong>side and outside <strong>the</strong> professi<strong>on</strong>. Will Manley’s Will Unwound<br />

blog number 762 states that <strong>the</strong> book “really fills a void <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> black hole that is library<br />

literature…. If you buy <strong>on</strong>e library science book this year, it should be The Laugh<strong>in</strong>g Librarian.”<br />

Smith has enjoyed read<strong>in</strong>g and writ<strong>in</strong>g library humor s<strong>in</strong>ce she became a librarian <strong>in</strong> 1973.<br />

She received <strong>the</strong> 1999 Edmund Lester Pears<strong>on</strong> <strong>Library</strong> Humor Award for an essay she wrote<br />

for <strong>the</strong> <strong>NMSU</strong> <strong>Library</strong> newsletter and <strong>in</strong> 2005 she was named a Fellow of <strong>the</strong> premier library<br />

Now that J. K. Rowl<strong>in</strong>g’s first novel for adults, The Casual Vacancy, is<br />

hitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> best-seller lists, it seemed like a good time to revisit a<br />

piece from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Library</strong> newsletter of September 2001:<br />

Muggles and Magic<br />

Recently, a friend told me that she had been <strong>in</strong>vited to a Harry Potter costume party and<br />

needed some advice <strong>on</strong> what to wear. S<strong>in</strong>ce she was not familiar with <strong>the</strong> Harry Potter<br />

books, I advised her to go as herself and announce that she was a Muggle.<br />

We like you!<br />

Muggles, as Harry Potter fans know, are ord<strong>in</strong>ary humans who live outside <strong>the</strong> world of<br />

magic that Harry and his friends Hermi<strong>on</strong>e and R<strong>on</strong> study at Hogwart’s School.<br />

The fasc<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> of today’s children with <strong>the</strong> Harry Potter novels rem<strong>in</strong>ds me of my own<br />

childhood read<strong>in</strong>g patterns. I read everyth<strong>in</strong>g from Archie and Ver<strong>on</strong>ica comic books to<br />

cereal boxes to Charles Dickens. I remember f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g gems <strong>in</strong> my parents’ home library such<br />

as “Rappac<strong>in</strong>i’s Daughter.” Only much later did I learn who Nathaniel Hawthorne was. In <strong>the</strong><br />

sixth grade, I read The Merchant of Venice and memorized <strong>the</strong> poem “The Lorelei” by He<strong>in</strong>rich<br />

He<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

In junior high, I began read<strong>in</strong>g Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magaz<strong>in</strong>e, which published science<br />

ficti<strong>on</strong> and fantasy as well as mystery stories, and remember well <strong>the</strong> classic time travel story<br />

“V<strong>in</strong>tage Seas<strong>on</strong>” by C.L. Moore. Through my teenage years, I devoured <strong>the</strong> works of H.G.<br />

Wells and <strong>the</strong> sci-fi anthologies edited by Anth<strong>on</strong>y Boucher. J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of <strong>the</strong> R<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

marked my debut <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> world of epic fantasy, a world that is still alive and well <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

famous “Wheel of Time” series by Robert Jordan.<br />

Whe<strong>the</strong>r you bury your nose <strong>in</strong> Harry Potter and <strong>the</strong> Sorcerer’s St<strong>on</strong>e, The Fellowship of <strong>the</strong><br />

R<strong>in</strong>g, The Eye of <strong>the</strong> World, Hawthorne, Dickens or Shakespeare, enjoy your venture <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

magical world of read<strong>in</strong>g, and go <strong>the</strong>re often. Hogwart’s School is as real as <strong>New</strong> Mexico<br />

State University—<strong>on</strong>ly a Muggle would disagree.—Jeanette Smith, <strong>Library</strong> Adm<strong>in</strong>istrati<strong>on</strong><br />
