RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Independent Research, Neuroscience Department, Michigan State University, East
Lansing, MI, September 2009-present
• Examined the effects of enrichment on pubertal cell proliferation
• Investigate the role of cell proliferation during puberty
• Utilize various lab skills such as stereotaxic surgery, brain sectioning, Nissl staining,
immunohistochemistry, microscopy, and statistical analysis
• Train and mentor undergraduate students in various projects and protocols
• Mentor: Dr. Cheryl Sisk
Independent Research, Biology Department, Hope College, Holland, MI, Spring 2007-
Spring 2009
• Investigated the role of galanin-like peptide in the onset of puberty in male and
female rats
• Found that galanin-like peptide rescues the onset of puberty in food-restricted male
and female rats, and is required for the onset of puberty in female, but not male rats
• Created own research question and design
• Carried out daily bodyweight and food intake measurements, performed stereotaxic
surgeries, brain sectioning, immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization
• Analyzed and interpreted data
• Prepared and executed oral presentation for the Biology Department Seminar
• Presented research at the 2009 Society for Behavioral Neuroendocrinology
conference in East Lansing, MI
• Mentor: Dr. Gregory Fraley
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Teaching assistant, Laboratory in Behavioral Neuroscience, Psychology Department,
Michigan State University, Fall 2010
• Instructed students on laboratory techniques, including perfusions, tissue
sectioning and mounting, immunocytochemistry, ovariectomies, and behavior
testing
• Held weekly office hours
• Read and graded lab reports
OUTREACH
Student Outreach, Brain Awareness Week, Michigan State University, March 2010 and
2011- 2012
• Interacted with a total of six elementary and middle school classes (2 nd , 5 th , 6 th , and
7 th grade) to raise awareness about science and the nervous system
• Led classroom activities and discussions pertaining to the anatomy and function of
the nervous system
• Managed “Brain Stations” in which I discussed and answered questions regarding
the brain and nervous system across species
Mohr, Margaret
Student Outreach Organizing Committee, Brain Bee, Michigan State University, 2012-
2013
• Worked with three other individuals on the MSU Neuroscience Outreach Team to
organize and plan the 2013 Brain Bee at MSU, a neuroscience competition for high
school students
• Helped organize and plan three enrichment sessions that included a sheep brain
dissection, a session on learning and memory, and a neurological disorders
diagnostic session (Fall 2012)
Student Outreach, Neuroscience Fair, Michigan State University, February 2011, February
2012, and January 2013
• Interacted with adults and children from the community to raise awareness about
science and the nervous system
• Led the “Brain Booth” in which I demonstrated and answered questions regarding
the anatomy and function of the nervous system across species (2011, 2012)
• Worked with four other individuals on the MSU Neuroscience Outreach Team to
organize and plan the 2013 Neuroscience Fair
Student Outreach, Prime Time presentation, Michigan State University, February 2011 and
January 2012
• Interacted with seniors at local community center to talk about healthy aging and
diseases affecting the nervous system
• Led presentation and discussion on stroke (2011)
• Led presentation on the aging brain (2012)
• Displayed human and animal brains and discussed the anatomy of the nervous
system
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Conflict Management Workshop, Michigan State University Graduate School, June 2010
• Developed communication and conflict management skills through discussion and
small group activities
• Learned effective strategies to prevent and resolve conflicts
How people learn: A cognitive science perspective, Michigan State University Graduate
School Workshop, April 2012
• Listened to a panel of cognitive scientists discuss how current research in learning
and memory can contribute to classroom instruction
• Learned strategies to integrate social media into the classroom to enhance learning
• Learned approaches to enhance students’ memory performance
Assisted in peer-review process, 2010-present
