MID-YEAR MEETING 2011
Half-Day Tours
Panoramic City Tour
Sunday, November 6
10 a.m.–1 p.m. or
2–5 p.m.
$85 per person
The 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. tour is the perfect
way to start your visit if you arrive in Dublin
on a late-night flight, and have some time
to get the lay of the land before check-in at
The Shelbourne.
Embark on an orientation tour of Dublin and
get to know its customs, traditions and
1,000 year old history.
Dublin is famous for the distinctive
architecture of its Georgian Squares, which
were laid out during the 1700s. As you ride
through the squares, you will notice the
uniformity of the houses. One way to
distinguish your home was to paint the door a
different color from your neighbor’s and add
distinctive knockers and elegant fanlights
above the door. This began the tradition of
Dublin’s ornate and colorful doorways.
From the hotel, you will travel just two miles (three kilometers) west
to Dublin’s playground, the 1742-acre Phoenix Park, the largest
urban enclosed park in Europe. Ornamental gardens, nature trails,
polo fields and the Dublin Zoo call this park home. And, the
President of Ireland and the American Ambassador have their
homes here. You will also have an opportunity to walk to the cross
where Pope John Paul II said mass in 1979.
Returning to the city center, your guide will make the buildings,
statues and other landmarks come alive. Among the city’s many
interesting sights is Trinity College, founded in 1592 by Queen
Elizabeth I. It is here that the famous Book of Kells is kept. (An
opportunity to visit Trinity College is offered in the Walking Dublin
Tour on Monday.)
Standing on high ground in the oldest part of Dublin is one of the
city's finest historic buildings, St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Highlights of
the interior include magnificent stonework and graceful pointed
arches with delicately chiseled supporting columns, as well as
beautiful stained glass.
The tour includes:
• Round trip transportation via deluxe vehicles
• Tour guide
• Visit inside St. Patrick’s Cathedral
