A6. Case Studies
CASE STUDY 1
Student A
Student A is an Indigenous Year 9 student who has recently joined the Academy. She is
a new student who moved to Kalgoorlie from the Coonanna Remote Aboriginal
Community. She is from a traditionally cultural background, with English being her
second language. She is extremely shy and wasn’t too sure or comfortable with her new
surroundings.
Since being enrolled with the Academy, staff has seen Student A slowly getting used to
the school and the Academy. The Academy is able to provide a safe environment for
her to feel comfortable and get to know other students and staff. A rapport is gradually
being built with this student and she is opening up to academy staff and she is a regular
visitor to the Academy rooms before school and during lunches.
CASE STUDY 2
Student B
Student B is a Year 10 Indigenous student who first joined the Academy in 2010, but left
the school during the first term; she now has returned to Kalgoorlie and has re-enrolled
with the Academy. This student is usually a confident, positive and happy student with
high attendance. This student has a very rough and traumatic history. She is a Ward of
the State and has moved around from place to place quite frequently. Recently this
student has had to deal with grief due to a number of losses within her family and she
was witness to a tragic incident. She is at risk and has had a small drop in attendance.
Since returning to school after these events, Student B has not wanted to attend class
and has been truant.
Academy Staff are providing mentoring and are closely monitoring the behaviour and
attendance of this student. Student B has a strong rapport with Academy staff and looks
at the Academy room as her safe haven. The Academy staff have been successful with
getting Student B back on track, back into class, and helping her increase her
attendance. She is once again coping with being at school and showing signs of
improvement. Student B has grown with confidence, being involved in ‘mock interviews’
and completing her resume in the Academy room. She has gone on to apply and
interview for the ANZ Bank Aboriginal School Based Traineeship that is setup by the
AFL Sports ready program. Due to the improvement of this student, the Academy
rewarded her by selecting her to attend the End of Year Reward Camp to the Gold
Coast.
Academy Highlights
LITERACY AND NUMERACY/PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
These Literacy/Numeracy/Personal Development classes are designed to focus on
assisting students with further development whilst attending our classes. The class is
held one period per week for each year group. We aim to increase the skills that are
necessary for them when they complete high school.
Throughout the year students have been participating in lessons such as completing a
number of newsletter articles for the Academy and the school; practise grammar,
punctuation and spelling; and students create a children’s book. This is a great way for
the Academy to contribute in any way possible to the whole school literacy plan.
TEAM CHALLENGE CLASSES
The Academy Team Challenge classes add a fun element to learning. It is a fantastic
way to further develop our students’ communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
This class is run once each week per year group. Each term is a different theme; Term 1
– Team Work, Term 2 – Wacky Games, Term 3 – Olympics and Term 4 – KGA World
Bank. Students participate in a variety of challenges such as an Amazing race, mine
fields, survivor challenges, KGA record attempts, researching and designing countries,
arts and craft projects and also games based on different careers.
BHP Nickel West Netball Carnival
The Nickel West Netball Tournament was a huge success again this year with schools
from across the Kalgoorlie region participated in the event. The event is sponsored by
BHP Nickel West, a long time sponsor of the Girls Academy. This event is solely run by
Year 10 KGA students as part of their Endorsed Program duties and is a great way to
showcase their talents as organisers and for their fellow students to showcase their
sportsmanship and athletic skills. Students and the Academy received high praise from
participating schools and sponsors for the success of the event.
BASKETBALL AND OTHER SPORT DEVELOPMENT CLASSES
Each year group will participate in basketball lessons, which are delivered off school site
at the Brookman Street Basketball Stadium.
©RM&LA Kalgoorlie Girls Academy Annual Report: December 2012 pg 6
This is a positive strategy to keep the girls interested and it helps to push them to further
developing their basketball skills. An Indigenous parent volunteer assists in delivering
the Year 9 basketball development session, with whom the girls have built strong rapport
and respect greatly. They really enjoy the parent volunteer helping out during this
session.
Our students are also exposed to a number of other different sports, such as netball,
tennis, volleyball, athletic events, cricket and a variety of fun games. The sport that is
chosen coincides with what is happening locally on the sporting calendar and keeps
things fresh. They have two “Physical Education” lessons, one basketball and the other
a different sport.
YEAR 10 ENDORSED PROGRAM – PGST (School Trip) and PGAM (Administration
Management)
This program is important for our Year 10 girls because if they successfully complete the
course, they will earn points towards their Year 12 Western Australian Certificate of
Education (WACE). They must complete 90 hours of the Endorsed Program. Students
are allocated with 2 Periods per week to do planning and keep up to date with their
record keeping. Students also can complete their work at home, before or after school
and during lunches.
The PGST School Trip students primarily assist the school Country Week Coordination
with planning and organising of the Country Week trip to Perth. This is a major school
event and girls are doing an excellent job in keeping up to date with tasks. Some tasks
include calling restaurants, booking accommodation, typing and organising meal
selections for staff and students, organising equipment, and also organising a night of
fun activities whilst on the camp.
The PGAM Administration Management students work closely with the KBCHS
Academy Teacher to setup and organise important annual KGA events, such as the
Nickel West Netball Carnival and the Barrick Go for Gold Basketball Tournament. These
events are student driven as the girls organise every part of the events such as venue
hire, trophies, inviting schools and organise community groups to come to the event for
first aid and food etc. The girls also organise teams and help with coaching, umpiring,
sponsor support, scoring and timing.
WEDNESDAY TUTORING – EGC
Students at our senior campus have contact time with Academy staff each Wednesday.
These sessions are mainly used for mentoring, tutoring and keeping girls up to date with
©RM&LA Kalgoorlie Girls Academy Annual Report: December 2012 pg 7
studies. Students attending on this day to complete studies and tasks are provided with
and have access to computers, Academy staff and room, teachers and ITAS tutors.
These sessions plays a vital role in assisting students in achieving their graduation. It
also is an opportunity to make contact with students just for a chat to see how they are
and if they are coping. Also from time to time lunch is provided for students to help keep
the girls focused.
‘GO FOR GOLD’ BASKETBALL CARNIVAL
This event is run by our Year 10 students as part of their endorsed program. The event
was a successful day. There were teams from CAPS Coolgardie, John Paul College,
Eastern Goldfields College KGA, Kalgoorlie Boulder Community High School and our
Academy KGA teams. We had four teams in each division and the competition was
fierce. The Junior Grand Final was won by JPC and our KGA EGC team won the Senior
division. A new addition to the day saw a match played by the Barrick All-stars team,
which consisted of Barrick employees who played against a combined KGA/Teachers/
Parents team. Players from both teams fought hard for the win, but even with our huge
cheer squad of students, the Barrick All-stars managed to walk away with bragging
rights. Fun was had by all involved and all schools have made our carnival a permanent
event on their school calendars.
BODY ARMOUR – PLAY
KBCHS Indigenous Academy students along with boys from the Goldfields Football
Academy were invited to see a play put on by Hepatitis WA called Body Armour. The
play was funny and it also showed the serious side of Hepatitis. I had a Year 9 KGA
student stand up and welcome the actors and organisers to our country; this was a great
opportunity to see our young Indigenous leaders show confidence at a community event.
Our students enjoyed the play and were very well behaved.
KGA vs GOLDFIELDS FOOTBALL ACADEMY – BASKETBALL COMPETITIONS
Students from each year group in the KGA were given the opportunity to compete
against the boys from the Goldfields Football Academy. Each game was held during the
school lunch break. Having this competition provides our students with the chance to
gain necessary game experience and it gives them a boost in confidence when playing
against harder opponents. This year our girls fought hard and showed great resilience,
but unfortunately were not successful at defeating the boys.
KALGOORLIE BOULDER BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION (KBBA) - LOCAL
COMPETITION
Year 9 and 10 Academy students have recently begun competing in the Local Kalgoorlie
Boulder Basketball Association competition. This year the Academy entered one Under
17’s team. The team is organised, coached and supported by parent volunteers and
Academy staff. Students train in the school gym after school twice per week to increase
their skills. Students are also exposed to participating in coaching and umpiring during
classes, as it gives our students a better understanding of the game. This is a positive
strategy to strengthen relationships of students, parents and community so they want to
stay involved in the Academy.
VET Program Students
Academy staff provide a supporting role to students that
are enrolled in the VET program. They come to us with
any issues and concerns that they may be experiencing
and we contact appropriate staff to assist them.
Students enrolled in a VET course work towards
achieving their Year 12 WACE graduation and another
certificate in their chosen qualification.
BARRICK GOLD – WORK PLACEMENT
This work placement opportunity was provided for Indigenous Year 10 students. We had
one student participate in an 8-week program that involved gaining valuable work place
experience and an introduction to various roles and careers that Barrick offers their
employees. This was a successful program, with the student receiving excellent training
from Barrick staff and furthering her knowledge of the mining industry.
LEARN, EARN, LEGEND! WORK EXPOSURE WITH GOVERNMENT PROGRAM -
Two Academy students were
selected to join other Academy
students to be part of the LEL
Work Exposure with Government
Program that was held in
Canberra. Students were
exposed to the work of
Parliamentarians and public
service officers in Australian
Public Service agencies in
Canberra. They also gained
firsthand experience of political life
and learnt about the variety of employment opportunities available in the public sector.
The program included a variety of activities that encouraged participants to consider
possible opportunities available for a career in the public service. They also were able to
increase their knowledge for civics education.
B5. SIGNIFICANT VARIATIONS
The Academy has faced a few changes in 2012, which have causes minor challenges to
running and delivering the scheduled Academy activities.
Issue #1: Transportation
In Semester 1, due to the large number of students enrolled in each year group,
Academy staff were not been able to transport students to an off school site training
facility to conduct intense basketball development sessions. This had a negative impact
on student participation, as the off-site trainings are a positive way to keep students
engaged and wanting to push themselves harder.
Mid to late Term 3, the Academy received a vehicle sponsored by Barrick Gold. Having
this vehicle has made transporting students to and from the facility possible. The
Academy is more appealing to students as a result.
Issue #2: Academy Staff Changes
There have been a number of changes with staff in 2012 for the Academy. There have
been three Academy Teachers at KBCHS, two Academy Teachers at EGC, two
Development Officers and two Program Managers. Unfortunately this has been a
disruptive for staff and students, and it has been quite a challenge to meet certain
deadlines for Academy activities and events. Also, consistency is always important
when delivering a successful program.
The Academy will have full time staff and will operate at full capacity by the beginning of
Term 1, 2013. There may also be a possibility to employ a part time Development
Issue #3: Unable to attend 2012 Academy Showcase
The KGA did not attend the Clontarf Girls Academy Showcase this year. This is a huge
event on the Academy calendar and is a major reward that the girls look forward to
attending each year. Unfortunately, due to staffing availability we were unable to attend.
This camp will happen again in 2013, and now that we have adequate Academy staff
and support, we look forward to being able to be in attendance.
B6. Amendments
have learned in 2012.
Work Readiness and Work Placement
In 2013 the Academy will endeavour to implement a stronger “Workplace Readiness and
Work Placement” program to ensure students are provided with opportunities to
undertake traineeships and other forms of training and accreditation. The aim is for all
students to attain at least Certificates I and II in an area or areas most suited to their
future career choice. Academy staff will begin to organise meetings with key
stakeholders to have things sorted for next year.
Nuari Girls Program
Staff will work to strengthen the Nuari Girls Program and ensure it is ready for 2013. We
will attempt to increase numbers and develop an outline of activities for students
involved. Staff will research ideas to possibly get students to work on accreditation and/
or establish a Life Skills program.
B7. Community Engagement
Primary School Visits
Year 9 students will conduct basketball developments, clinics, and promotional talks to
Year 7 primary school students during Week 8 of Term 4. This will promote the
Academy and spark interest of students that will be entering into high school in 2013.
International Women’s Day
This is a very successful event; students prepare and provide morning tea to their
mothers, female school staff and key community stakeholders and members.
Basketball and Netball Carnivals
Each year the Academy hosts a Basketball and Netball carnival for schools from across
the Kalgoorlie region. These events are organised and run by Academy students and
staff. Our events have once again been successful and are a positive way to get out
into the community and showcase the high level of confidence, leadership and athletic
skills our students have to offer.
BHP Nickel West Netball Carnival
The Nickel West Netball Tournament was a huge success again this year with schools
from across the Kalgoorlie region participate in the event.
Barrick Go for Gold Basketball Carnival
The Barrick Go For Gold Basketball Carnival was a huge success this year with schools
from across the Kalgoorlie region participating in the annual event. Sponsored by
Barrick Gold Kanowna Mine, a long standing partner and sponsor of the Girls Academy.
the event is hosted and coordinated by our Year 10 students as part of their endorsed
program. The event received teams from CAPS Coolgardie, John Paul College, Eastern
Goldfields College KGA, Kalgoorlie Boulder Community High School and our Academy
KGA teams.
A new addition to the day saw a match played by the Barrick All-stars team, which
consisted of Barrick employees who played against a combined KGA/Teachers/Parents
team. Players from both teams fought hard for the win, but even with our huge cheer
squad of students, the Barrick All-stars managed to walk away with bragging rights. Fun
was had by all involved and all schools have made our carnival a permanent event on
their school calendars.
YMCA ‘You Can Do It’ Program – Year 10’s
This program was offered to the Academy by the YMCA. The program ran between
8-10 weeks. The YMCA are keen to further develop a partnership with our Academy.
This is a great way for our students to make use of this community facility and to get
more youth active in community organisations. The facility provides a variety of
activities from exercise programs, gym equipment, squash courts, a variety of youth
activities and child care. The academy received positive feedback YMCA staff and our
students.
2012 Academy Awards
Over 100 community members were in attendance at the nineties themed 2012
Academy Awards event at the Western Mining Centre. Academy staff, students,
families, committee members, sponsors, invited guests, and leading Indigenous
community members joined in the celebrations for our annual awards event showcasing
