The biggest concern for a coach as students arrive on campus
is the shape and conditioning of the athletes. But Stathas has
been pleasantly surprised.
"My girls came in shape and ready to go. I have
had more hustle and effort in those workouts
than I have ever had in the six years that I
have been coaching. I had never had an entire
group of girls really come in shape and ready
to go.
"We have not had to spend a lot of time
conditioning," she said. "We have been able
to focus on volleyball, which I think is a huge
blessing as a coach to not have to focus on getting
somebody in shape."
The tournament in Valdosta will be an early test for
the Lady Bearcats.
"It should be some really good competition for us and will be
an eye-opening experience, letting us know how well we are able
to compete," Stathas said. "I think it can be a successful weekend
for us but also a very challenging weekend."
Flagler College and Armstrong Atlantic State
University are considered the Peach Belt's top two
teams. Flagler is ranked No. 16 in the national
preseason poll while Armstrong was among
schools receiving votes, just two spots out of
the Top 25. Flagler and Armstrong dominate
the eight-member preseason all-PBC team
with three players apiece.
"Armstrong Atlantic and Flagler are definitely
the top in the conference and have been
for a while," Stathas said. "I think everything
else is up for grabs. I look for us to finish in the
top four. That is my mindset of where we need to be,
where I think we are capable of being this coming year."
