From Daniel W. Ball
President
M
arge and I are enjoying our 12th season with Lander University, and the athletic events are
some of the more memorable and exciting times for both of us.
Our two sons competed at the collegiate level, so we know firsthand the role athletics plays in each
university’s strategic plan. We are aware of the lessons of life which are learned on the playing fields
and courts. Whether it be basketball, baseball, soccer, softball, tennis or volleyball, sports provide a
common denominator for all of us.
It seems that in a basketball arena everyone can appreciate the electricity of the slam dunk, the
coolness of the clutch free throw and the pressure of a last-second shot. And after the most amazing
of plays, it’s all right if you jump out of your seat and give the guy behind you a high five.
That’s what athletics is all about. And it happens right here in Lander’s Horne Arena.
Coach Kevin Pederson and the Lady Bearcats, and Coach Jeff Burkhamer and the men’s basketball
team have my best wishes for a successful and injury-free season.
Please join Marge and me as we support our Bearcats.
From Jeff May
Athletics Director
Welcome to Lander University Basketball 2011-12! We are excited about the upcoming season
and anticipate a strong showing by the Bearcats. I invite and encourage you to support
coaches Kevin Pederson and DeCole Shoemate and our team by attending as many games as your
schedule will permit. Make each game a family night out and also bring a friend.
Please take time to familiarize yourself with this publication. It provides excellent information on
our coaches, the history of the program and, most importantly, our student-athletes who represent
Lander.
“To be a member of a Lander University intercollegiate team is both a privilege and a responsibility. We
expect and demand that our student-athletes excel in the classroom as well as on the courts and fi elds and
that they perform with pride, poise and proper conduct. Character, citizenship and a spirit of volunteerism are
also expected of those who compete on behalf of Lander University. We believe these self-discipline activities
will assist all student-athletes in obtaining a degree and will equally benefi t them in becoming contributing
members of society."
Pederson enters seventh year as Lander head coach
Kevin Pederson recently finished his sixth season as Lander's
head coach after leading the Lady Bearcats to a schoolrecord
29 wins, four weeks atop the USA Today/ESPN Division
II Coaches Top 25, a second straight
Sweet 16 appearance and a final No.
6 ranking.
This also marked the first time in
the program’s history that the team
has achieved four straight 20-win
seasons and four straight NCAA
tournament appearances.
In nine-plus seasons, Pederson has
amassed a 207-97 career coaching
record for a .678 winning percentage.
Kevin Pederson
Head Coach
He was 88-31 in three-and-a-half
seasons at Anderson College and is
119-67 overall at Lander.
In the past two seasons, the Lady Bearcats have posted a 56-8
overall record and 33-3 mark in the Peach Belt Conference.
In 2009-10, Pederson, who led the Lady Bearcats to a
27-4 record and the Peach Belt Conference regular-season
championship, was voted the Peach Belt and WBCA Region 3
Coach of the Year and the 2010 Bulletin's National Coach of the
Month for February.
The Lady Bearcats finished 5-22 in Pederson's first year at
Lander, his only losing season as a head coach. Lander followed
with records of 15-13, 23-12, 20-11 and 27-4 before last season's
second consecutive Sweet Sixteen appearance.
In 2008-09, Pederson led the Lady Bearcats to their second
straight Peach Belt Conference tournament championship from
the fifth seed position. Four years ago, Lander was the Peach Belt
regular season co-champion and the PBC tournament winner.
The Lady Bearcats earned an automatic berth in the NCAA
National Tournament and won an NCAA game for the first time
in program history.
Pederson has won five conference championships in nine years
and has now taken two programs into the NCAA Tournament. He
led Anderson to its first-ever winning season and first two NCAA
berths, reaching the second round and the Sweet 16. His teams
have improved each year at both Anderson and Lander, with 15,
17, 25 and 33 wins at Anderson.
Pederson has recruited a WBCA National Player of the Year
in Shannon McKever (2010-11) and coached four conference
players of the year, three freshmen of the year, and two career
2,000-point scorers in LaShonda Chiles and Diedra Langston
(Anderson). Chiles played for Pederson at both Anderson and
Lander, and became the NCAA Division II all-time women's
leading scorer last season when she finished with 2,885 career
points.
Pederson led Anderson to a 33-3 record and a berth in the
NCAA Division II Sweet 16 in the 2004-2005 season and was
voted the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC) Coach
of the Year in 2005. The Lady Trojans, who were ranked No. 1
in the East Region at the end of the 2005 regular season, fell to
A native of Fairfax, Va., Pederson worked five seasons for the
Clemson men's basketball program under Rick Barnes and Larry
Shyatt before joining Anderson College in 2001 as a volunteer
assistant men's basketball coach.
In December 2001 he was named the interim women's head
coach and led the Lady Trojans to a 13-9 overall record. After
being named the head coach, he followed with records of 17-12
in 2002-03; 25-7 in 2003-04; and 33-3 in 2004-05.
Pederson is married to the former Adair Clary of Gaffney,
Coach Kevin Pederson’s Prospectus
Lady Bearcats looking to reload for 2011-12 season
Over the past two seasons, the Lander women’s basketball
team has posted a 56-8 record, a No. 1 national ranking, a
14-game winning streak and two consecutive NCAA Sweet 16
appearances. But the Lady Bearcats fell short of the Elite Eight
both years, and that was particularly disappointing in March
2011.
The NCAA Tournament’s Elite
Eight was a preseason goal for the
team the past two seasons, with the
quarterfinals being as prestigious to
Division II as the “Final Four” is to
Division I.
The confidence returns in 2011-12.
But, this time, the Elite Eight is not
among the team’s immediate goals.
“We fell short of some of our other
goals,” Lander coach Kevin Pederson
said of last season, despite the team’s
remarkable 29-4 record, a No. 1
national ranking for four consecutive
weeks from January into February,
and a final No. 6 ranking. Two of the
four losses were to eventual national
champion Clayton State.
“We tied for the Peach Belt
Conference regular season title
on this side (PBC East Division)
with Aiken,” he said. “Clayton
won the outright regular season
title. We didn’t win the conference
tournament. We did make the Sweet
16, which was great. But we are kind
of ‘stepping back’ to move forward.
We are focusing on getting better one
day at a time instead of focusing on
March.”
Lander opens its season Nov. 19-20 in the Lady Bearcats
Tip-Off Classic, meeting NCAA Tournament team Barton
College on the 19th and Ferris State the next day at Finis Horne
Arena. Lander also faced national Division I power Duke at the
beginning of November.
The Lady Bearcats lose Division II Women’s National Player
of the Year Shannon McKever, another senior post player in
Tasheba Butler and important reserve Katie Hupp. Also not
returning are guards Nardia Robbins and Brianna Webb, and
forward Chentieh Ladson.
But plenty of talent returns and promising players have been
added to the program. The successful freshman class of 2008-
09 is now a senior class with guards Brittni Johnson (Athens,
Ga.), Ciara Lyons (Augusta, Ga.), Jasmine Judge (Augusta, Ga.)
and Mukia Myrick (Columbus, Ga.), and post players Keondra
Barnes (Columbus, Ga.) and Kaylyn Small (Augusta, Ga.)
returning for their fourth years.
Two more seniors that return are guard Kami Phillips (Augusta,
Rachelle Rasley (Richmond, Va.), giving the team eight seniors.
The 2011-2012 recruiting class includes two key transfers
in two-time All Peach Belt junior guard/forward Janyce Ealey
(Carrollton, Ga.) from North Georgia College & State University,
and junior post Precious Elkins (Conyers, Ga.) from Lenoir-
Rhyne College.
The roster will have two freshmen
who could contribute right away in
guards Ashley Watts (Augusta, Ga.)
and Jasmine Franklin (Greenville,
S.C.). A third freshman, 6-foot-1
center Bria Lonon (Statesboro, Ga.),
will redshirt.
The fourth-year seniors are 76-19
since joining the Lander program in
2008.
“This is really the culminating
year of a process that began four
years ago,” Pederson said of
Johnson, Lyons, Judge, Myrick,
Barnes and Small, who scored a
combined 45 points per game last
season.
“We had just come off a good
season (in 2007-08). We won the
conference. We had our first NCAA
Tournament win in school history.
And then (losing stars Tiara Good,
LaShonda Chiles and Stephanie
Ponds) we were back to square
one, playing all freshmen and
sophomores. And we had so much to
teach them.
“They did well their freshman
year (20 wins, 11 losses). They
were the number one seed in the NCAA Tournament (Southeast
Regional) their sophomore year (27-4). Their junior year (29-4),
they were the number one team in the country for four weeks. It’s
amazing what they have accomplished. They have pretty much
done everything except for getting to the Elite Eight.”
Pederson said the seniors are more determined than ever.
“I think the sense of urgency is here and there are some things
that they still want to accomplish,” he said. “They have team
goals. They have individual goals. Several of them would like the
opportunity to play professionally after they are done (at Lander).
“They know this is their last chance to prove what they need
to prove. They are much more motivated and focused than at any
point since they have been here.”
At least two of those seniors will start with Johnson at point
guard and Judge at shooting guard. Myrick and Lyons are starting
candidates at wing with both expected to play major minutes,
whether starting or not.
Ealey is a likely starter either at a wing or post, Elkins is a
potential starter in the post, as well as Small, Barnes and Rasley.
Ealey, Elkins, Small, Barnes and Rasley are looking to fill the
void left by McKever (17.2 points, 9.8 rebounds last season) and
Butler (9.2 points, 7.6 rebounds).
“We don’t have that dominant player (like McKever) this
year,” Pederson said. “But we have a lot of very good players.
We probably won’t have anybody who averages 17, 18 points per
game. I think we’ll see a lot in the 10 to 12-point range. I think
we easily have six players who are good enough to average in
double figures.”
The returning guards are the most certain part of Lander’s
2011-12 team.
“This is the best group of guards that I have had in my
coaching career,” said Pederson, who enters his seventh season at
Lander after three-and-a-half years at Anderson. “We lose Nardia
Robbins and Brianna Webb. But we replace them with a healthy
Kami Phillips and then Ashley Watts and Jasmine Franklin. And
the other kids back from last year are a little bit better.”
Pederson is hoping for a breakout year from Johnson, who
scored 8.8 points per game last season while adding 106 assists
and 62 steals.
“She has the ability to lead this team,” Pederson said. “She has
the talent. Is this the year that everything comes together and she
becomes one of the best point guards in the country? She has the
ability. But she hasn’t done it yet.”
Phillips will also likely see time at point guard. She missed all
of 2010-11 due to a serious knee injury suffered in a February
2010 game.
“In person, it was one of the most brutal injuries that I have
ever seen,” Pederson said. “It has taken her a year-and-a-half to
come back from that injury. We didn’t know for a while if she
was going to be able to come back. It speaks to what kind of
person she is, how tough she is.
Pederson added that Phillips is “one of the mothers on the
team. She is a very mature player. She encourages everybody.
She is a great leader and a tremendous defensive player. She is
going to add a lot of depth to that position. She is good enough to
start.”
Judge was one of the nation’s top 3-point shooters last year,
making 114 from behind the arc with an impressive 40 percent
shooting percentage. She has hit 288 3-pointers in her college
career.
“She is the best shooter that I have ever coached,” Pederson
said of Judge, who scored 11.6 points per game last season. “We
expect big things out of her. With Shannon McKever gone, I
think she becomes the focal point of our team (from opposing
defenses).”
Watts, who scored 2,101 points in her high school career, could
see some playing time as a guard.
“Ashley Watts can really shoot the ball,” Pederson said. “She
hit about 80 threes in her senior year in high school. She can do
a few more things than Jasmine can outside of just shooting the
ball. She is not as pure a shooter as Jasmine, but a little more
skilled in other areas. She has the ability to help us this year.”
Lyons and Myrick return at wing and are crucial to Lander’s
success. Lyons averaged 10.8 points per game last year while
Myrick averaged 8.7.
The two-time All Peach Belt player and 2008-09 PBC
Freshman of the Year, Lyons also won her school’s prestigious
Dr. Samuel C. Hodges Award as the Female Athlete of the Year in
2010-11.
“Ciara Lyons is one of the best slashers in the league,”
Pederson said. “Ciara is the hardest working player on the team.
She is going to give you everything she’s got. If you’ve got to
pick one leader on this team, it’s probably her.”
Pederson called Myrick, “one of the best defensive guards in
our league. She has a tremendous amount of ability. If she can
stay healthy and play to the fullest ability, people have yet to see
how good she is. She should be averaging in double figures. She
just hasn’t put everything together yet. She is a player who has
got to step up.”
Franklin also hopes to contribute at a guard/wing position.
“Jasmine is athletic, a great slasher, can run all day long, and
very skilled,” he said. “She is going to have to work hard to break
into the lineup now. But I want to see something out of her and
Ashley Watts because a year from now, those are the two guards
that we will have left. We need to get those kids into games so
they can get some experience.”
Ealey and Elkins come to Lander with high expectations.
The 5-foot-10 Ealey averaged 15.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per
game as a sophomore at North Georgia and was also the 2010
PBC Freshman of the Year when she averaged 14 points and
seven rebounds per game.
The 5-foot-11 Elkins averaged nine points and seven rebounds
in 19 minutes of action per game at Lenoir-Rhyne, including a
double-double against Lander this past season with 11 points and
10 rebounds.
“We were very fortunate. We lose Shannon McKever and
Tasheba Butler in the post, and we bring in Precious Elkins and
Janyce Ealey. They have to learn our system and adjust to me.
But they are both so talented,” Pederson said of the transfers.
“Ealey is very skilled. She can shoot the 3, shoot midrange, and
drive the ball, post up, just about anything on the floor. She is one
of the most talented kids that I have ever coached,” he said.
“Elkins is a tremendous full-court player. She beats people
down the court consistently. She rebounds the ball well, gets to
the free throw line, and really fits how we want to play,” Pederson
added.
Pederson calls Small the only true center on Lander’s roster.
Averaging 3.7 rebounds in 9.6 minutes per game last season,
Small often entered the game to give McKever some rest. This
year, the 5-10 veteran will be expected to play more minutes and
possibly start.
“Nobody in the conference got more rebounds per minute than
her,” Pederson said. “She is definitely going to play. It’s just a
question of how many minutes.”
The 5-10 Barnes has also been reliable coming off the bench in
the post and will be counted on again this season.
“Keondra Barnes is a crafty veteran. She knows the system,
plays hard, great attitude, great student, and does everything you
can ask a player to do. She is very solid. I know that I can put her
in the game and get something out of her.”
Meanwhile, Rasley can play post or guard. The 5-11
North Florida transfer played particularly well in the NCAA
Tournament in March.
“She’s got the size to defend a four or a five,” Pederson said.
“But she is also one of the best shooters on the team. With her,
we are really trying to find mismatches. She is much more
talented than what a lot of people got to see last year.”
One of the biggest losses on the team is on the sidelines.
Russ Gregg, who was with Pederson his entire coaching
career, has left for a head coaching position at nearby
Erskine College. Also, manager and graduate
assistant coach Alex Smith has moved on after
four years.
“Russ has been ready for a head
coaching opportunity for a few
years,” Pederson said. “When
Erskine called, it made perfect
sense. He doesn’t have to move.
His wife keeps her job. It’s a league
(Conference Carolinas) that he is
familiar with. We spent several years
together in that league at Anderson. He
knows what it takes to be successful in
that league. He’s got a good team in place
(at Erskine). I miss him. But he definitely
did the right thing. He’ll do a great job at
Erskine.”
Pederson has replaced Gregg with DeCole
Shoemate, a former volunteer assistant coach at
Lander.
Shoemate played at Florida International,
transferred to Anderson, and later became a head
coach at Brewton-Parker College.
“She is the first player that I ever signed to a
scholarship when I was at Anderson,” Pederson
said. “For us to get a head coach to take our
assistant coach’s position speaks volumes about her
commitment to what we are trying to accomplish.
She is a great role model for the girls. She has been
a player. She has been a coach. She has seen both
sides.”
The watershed moment of Lander’s 2010-11
season came on Feb. 10, 2011, when the then topranked
and unbeaten Lady Bearcats suffered a heartbreaking
83-81 final shot loss at No. 2 Clayton State.
“Clayton State had to go through us to get where they wanted
to go,” Pederson said. “All the way up until February, they were
chasing us. We were number one in the country and they were
number two in the country. We were 23-0, they were 22-0. They
hit a last-second shot to beat us. That one possession where they
make that tip-in basket to beat us by one changed the whole
season. That got them the number one seed in the region which
meant we had to go back down there to play them to get into the
Elite Eight.”
Clayton State would beat Lander again in the Sweet 16,
76-60, and rolled to the national championship, never being
challenged in the quarterfinals, semifinals or national title
game.
“I would take up the argument that we were the second best
team in the country,” Pederson said. “Clayton State plays a
Shaw team in the Final Four that we beat by 16 points (81-65)
up in Washington, D.C., in a tournament.
“Clayton State had a great team and I do believe at the
end of the year, they were better than us. But I do think
we were the second best team in the country. I really
think (with different brackets) that we could have met
them for the national championship.”
Pederson said Clayton State is the obvious
favorite in the Peach Belt and maybe nationally
once again.
“Everything goes through Clayton State.
And we have to go back to their place again
this year (January 25). They lost their
best player (Teshymia Tillman) but they
have everyone else back. Plus, they have
a point guard who tore her ACL and
missed all of last year who will be back.”
Pederson added, “Columbus State has
everybody back. USC Aiken lost a couple of
good players, but they have a lot of kids back
from a year where they were as high as number
six in the country.
“Those three teams (Clayton, Columbus,
Aiken) concern me the most. Plus, everybody
else is going to be strong. Armstrong is going to
be better this year. Francis Marion and Georgia
College have new players. North Georgia got their
second Division I transfer in a year. Montevallo has
a new coach, Flagler had a good recruiting class, and
Georgia Southwestern has been very athletic that
last couple of years.”
Pederson is looking forward to the opener versus
Barton College.
“I am a big believer in playing strong teams
early in the year because if you are going to lose, I
would rather lose early and find out what we need
to do to get better,” said Pederson, whose next
victory will tie him with Katrina Sacoco (1984-
91, 97) for most wins (120) as a Lander women’s
basketball coach.
“That’s one game that I have pinpointed on
the schedule. Barton is going to be a preseason top 20 team,
they went to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last
year, they return everybody, plus they got a transfer from East
Carolina. They have a tremendously athletic team.”
Lander also faces Wingate and West Georgia at the Clayton
State Tournament after Christmas, visits traditional powers
Tusculum and Carson-Newman, takes on Lincoln Memorial on
the road, and faces Southern Wesleyan at home before settling
into the Peach Belt schedule.
Coach DeCole Shoemate
DeCole Shoemate
Assistant Coach
DeCole Shoemate, a native of San
Diego, Calif., begins her first
year as assistant coach for the Lady
Bearcats. A former Lander volunteer
coach, who has been the head
coach at Brewton-Parker in Mount
Vernon, Ga., for the past two seasons,
Shoemate returns with a wealth of
experience and expectations to help
keep the women's basketball program
heading in the right direction.
At Brewton-Parker College (BPC),
Coach Shoemate served as associate
head coach for one year before taking
over head coaching responsibilities.
As head coach, Shoemate signed several all-state players and
transfers, including one Kodak All-American. She led the team
to the SSAC Conference Tournament, with several players being
named All-Conference and All-Academic.
Shoemate enhanced BPC’s women’s basketball program by
building character and developing young people in a multifaceted
manner. She built a strong foundation by turning the
program into one that was competitive and well respected.
Serving as an active member and spokesperson for the
Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Coach Shoemate has had a
great and positive influence on the students, college community,
and region.
Traveling throughout the summer she shares her faith and
serves at prominent FCA camps, such as Black Mountain, N.C.’s
Multi-Sport Camp, and St. Simon, Ga.’s Leadership Camp, where
she strives to help promote the vision to see the world impacted
for Jesus Christ through the influence of athletes and coaches.
As a prep at Battery Creek (S.C.) High School, Coach
Shoemate led her high school team to the South Carolina 3-A
State Championship. She was two-time Female Athlete of the
year, Player of the Year, and four-time All-Area and All-Regional
Player. Shoemate was also named to the All-State team and
played in the North/South All Star Game.
She signed and played Division I basketball at Florida
International where she won a Sunbelt Conference Championship
and made an NCAA Sweet 16 Appearance.
She transferred to Anderson (S.C.) University as then-head
coach Kevin Pederson’s first signee. While under the guidance of
Coach Pederson, Shoemate was an instrumental part of the team
that lead the nation in scoring at 85 points per game, and reached
100 points or more on four occasions.
During her stint at Anderson she received All-Conference
honors and a Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference
Championship. She graduated in 2005 with a bachelor's in
business management.
About Lander
HISTORY
Lander University was founded by Methodist clergyman
Samuel Lander in 1872 as Williamston Female College in
Williamston, S.C. It remained a private institution for 26 years.
In 1898, the College gained support of the South Carolina
Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In 1904,
the College was relocated to Greenwood, S.C., and was renamed
Lander College in honor of its founder.
In 1948, when the Methodist Conference, pursuant to a policy
of consolidation in its education efforts, decided to end support
of Lander College, interested citizens of Greenwood formed The
Lander Foundation as a nonprofit corporation and leased the
College from the Church.
In 1951, the county of Greenwood obtained the College name
and property from
the Methodist
Conference. The
South Carolina
General Assembly
created the Greenwood
County
Education Commission,
known
as The Lander
Foundation, to
serve as the board
of control for the
College. Lander
thus became the
only four-year liberal
arts college in
the United States
to be controlled
and financed by
a county government.
On July 1, 1973, Lander College came under the control of the
Board of Trustees of the State Colleges of South Carolina, making
Lander a state-supported college. The State College Board of
Trustees governed Lander, the College of Charleston and Francis
Marion College. Effective July 1, 1988, governance of Lander
was vested in the Lander College Board of Trustees.
On July 1, 1992, by action of the Board of Trustees, the institution
became Lander University.
Lander was founded as a college for women. Men were admitted
in 1943, and the institution is now completely coeducational.
Lander University subscribes to a policy of equal educational
and employment opportunity for all.
Mission Statement
Grounded in the belief that education is a liberating force
which makes it possible for an individual to live a life of
meaningful activity, of personal satisfaction, and of service to
others as a neighbor and a citizen, Lander University has chosen
teaching and learning as its principal concerns and providing
a challenging education for qualified students as its mission.
Through its liberal arts programs and its professional schools for
business, education and nursing, the university offers an undergraduate
curriculum that combines a broad liberal education with
specialized study leading either to immediate application in a
career or to more advanced study. The undergraduate programs
provide opportunities for students to achieve competence in a
major discipline and to explore a broad core curriculum designed
to assist them in developing the ability (1) to gather and critically
analyze information from a variety of fields and to use that
information as a basis for reasoned judgments and for effective
problem solving, (2) to synthesize diverse ideas and information,
and (3) to understand and convey ideas clearly. In addition to its
undergraduate programs, Lander provides a limited number of
master’s programs
and post-graduate
courses that
respond to critical
needs of the
immediate region
and the state.
Supporting the
university’s role as
a
teaching institution
and recognizing
that scholarship
is essential
to establishing
and maintaining
excellence of instruction,
Lander
faculty engage
in scholarly and
creative activities
appropriate
to their teaching
fields. In addition,
the faculty and staff recognize Lander’s responsibility to the
public and to the local economy; therefore, the university serves
as an intellectual and cultural center and cooperates with various
agencies, schools and businesses.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES
Lander University has over 60 organizations and clubs, each
offering students different opportunities. The choices, challenges
and opportunities students face by participating in these organizations
will assist them in classes and will allow them to meet new
friends and socialize with old friends. There are many different
areas to choose from, such as academic organizations, clubs
and interest groups, media organizations, club sports, honorary
societies, religious organizations, and Greek fraternities and
sororities.
15

Lander’s beautiful 123-acre campus is a combination of
contemporary and traditional facilities, and the campus is
continually growing and changing. Lander boasts a 276,000 item
library, the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center with a beautiful
art gallery and 700-seat auditorium, contemporary classrooms
and a well-equipped Student Center. Lander’s math and science
building is equipped with the most advanced equipment and
laboratories. Home of Lander basketball, our physical education/athletics
complex provides classrooms, a basketball arena,
racquetball courts, an indoor track and a weight room.
Lander is a state-assisted coeducational university with an
enrollment of approximately 3,000. Founded in 1872, Lander
is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor’s- and
master’s-level degrees.
Greenwood - The Emerald City
Greenwood is among the top 10 largest cities in South Carolina
with a population of 23,000 and a county population exceeding
66,000. It is located near the Piedmont Plateau in western South
Carolina. Greenwood is three to four hours west of the beautiful
South Carolina beaches and two to four hours southeast of the
popular Blue Ridge Mountains.
Greenwood’s climate generally allows for year-round enjoyment
of the outdoors! At Lake Greenwood, you’ll find public
boat landings, bait and tackle shops, fishing piers, picnic and
swimming areas, campsites, a variety of restaurants and the
Greenwood State Park. For sports enthusiasts, there are many
beautifully manicured golf courses in the area as well as Lander’s
Joe Chandler Physical Education and Exercise Studies Center, the
YMCA and the Greenwood Civic Center.
The Greenwood Museum has a variety of exhibits and has
twice been recognized as the S.C. Tourist Attraction of the Year in
its category. Lander’s Monsanto Gallery receives over 500 visitors
monthly to view exhibits of Southeastern artists. The Greenwood
Community Theatre offers plays and musicals throughout
the year, including children’s theatre. And the Greenwood-Lander
Performing Arts sponsors an annual series of concerts and events
that brings international music, dance and theatre to Lander’s
Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center stage.
SUPPORT SERVICES
Lander offers a number of progams to ensure that all students
reach their highest potential inside and outside of the classroom.
These services are free to the students and we encourage every
student to take advantage of them. They often make the difference
when a student is encountering difficulties in college.
Academic Success Center
The Academic Success Center (ASC) provides quality services
to students and faculty through a variety of retention efforts.
These efforts include peer tutoring, academic advising for
high-risk students, advising seminars for faculty, an intervention
program for students on academic probation (SASP), one-onone
mentoring, study skills classes (College Seminar 101), high
school-to-college transition programs for incoming freshmen, and
About Lander
advisement/registration assistance to incoming and future transfer
students. Additionally, the Academic Success Center offers
placement and CLEP testing and preparation for PRAXIS exams
(Education major only). Furthermore, the Academic Success Center
coordinates the accommodations for students with disabilities
in conjunction with the Wellness Center.
Career Services
The Office of Career Services provides education, counseling,
information and assistance to Lander students in areas that are
related to career choices and employment opportunities. These
services include individual career counseling, career fairs, interest
preference testing, career Internet lab and library, graduate school
resources, on-campus interviews, career presentations (resume'
writing, interviewing skills, etc.) and a part-time/full-time job
posting service.
Counseling Services
Offices within the Department of Counseling Services exist
in order to help prevent problems, or to assist students in
dealing with problems once they occur. Personal counseling is
available at no charge on an individual, confidential basis to any
student experiencing difficulties such as low morale, relationship
problems, time management pressures, alcohol or drug abuse, or
poor academic performance. Personal counseling is accessible by
appointment or on a walk-in basis for students.
LANDER’S CAMPUS LIFE
Residence Life
Lander’s residence halls offer an ideal living environment for
student’s right on campus. Besides the convenience of living
close, residence life allows students to encounter a full college
experience. Meeting new friends, living away from home and no
monthly bills are just a few advantages to residence life. Lander’s
campus is also safe, friendly and convenient, with parking areas
outside each residence hall.
Safety
Lander University provides a 24-hour certified police force to
enforce federal, state, and local laws, and university rules and
regulations. They also administer the university vehicle registration
and parking policies and offer educational and crime prevention
programs for students, faculty and staff.
Officers are available to escort students, faculty and staff as
a safety precaution to and from areas on campus. Emergency
speaker telephones are located across campus. These phones
are wired with emergency buttons that will automatically dial
University Police.
Lander also has a formal Emergency Action Plan which establishes
procedures that will aid officials in determining the best
use of resources to manage disasters, minimize loss of life and
injury, and protect resources and facilities.
Chiles honored by South Carolina
Athletic Hall of Fame
Lander’s LaShonda Chiles received many honors during
her record-setting college basketball career. So being
nominated for another award at the end of her senior year
didn’t raise her curiosity too much.
“Coach (Pederson) had called
me and told me, shortly after the
season ended, that I was nominated
for Female Amateur Athlete of the
Year for the South Carolina Athletic
Hall of Fame,” Chiles recalls of a
conversation with Lady Bearcats head
basketball coach Kevin Pederson.
Chiles officially received the award
LaShonda Chiles
during the South Carolina Athletic
Hall of Fame’s annual induction and awards ceremony
at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center in May
2008.
The 5-foot-2 guard from Greenwood closed out her
college career as the NCAA Division II all-time women’s
career scoring leader with 2,885 points combined at
Anderson and Lander universities.
Chiles broke the nearly 20-year-old record of 2,810
points held by Dina Kangas of Minnesota-Duluth (1988-
91).
Chiles was a two-time Division II All-American at
Anderson University, where she averaged 21.8 points
per game over her three years there under Pederson. She
was the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC)
Tournament MVP all three years and was the league’s
Freshman of the Year in 2003-04.
