Transplanting and Soil
This February meeting will feature a transplanting demo
by Gordon Deeg. There will be no workshop so please
leave your trees at home.
Gordon will demonstrate Mitsuyo's method of
transplanting which he has learned from his visits to Japan.
There will also be a discussion of soils so please bring in a
sample of the type of bonsai soil you use. A baggie’s
worth will do.
Gordon is offering to host a transplanting workshop at his
home in March.
Details will be announced at the meeting and you are
encouraged to sign up so that he has a headcount.

January Meeting
January 27, 2010 our first meeting of the new year
featured Jim Gremel. He did a lecture/demo on grafting.
Although the meeting ran long, members found it
informative and worth the extra time.

design concepts by Dave DeGroot starts at 6PM, Saturday,
followed by a raffle. The plant and pot sale, including

March 20-21, 2010 Kusamura Bonsai Club will hold its
50th Anniversary Show at Mitchell Park, 3800 Middlefield
Road. Admission is free. There will be demonstrations,
raffles and club member tree sales both days. The theme of
the show is "Our Oldest Tree" and will celebrate a
founding sensei, Tosh Saburomaru and a unique display of
legacy trees from our members. Guest demonstrator to be

March 20-21,2010 Santa Cruz Bonsai Kai presents its 21st
annual show at the Scotts Valley Community Center, 360
Kings Village Road from 10:30AM-4:30PM.

Demonstration at 2PM on both days by Katsumi Kinoshita.
Plant sales, door prizes, demonstration tree raffle and

March 27-28,2010 San Jose Betsuin Bonsai Club: 40th
Annual Bonsai Exhibit at the San Jose Betsuin Buddhist
Church, 640 North 5th Street. Hours are Saturday, 12-
4PM, and Sunday 11AM-4PM.Demonstration at 1 PM
both days by Harry Hirao, aka "Mr California Juniper"
from Huntington Beach. Plant and vendor sales both days.

Pot Field Trip by Steve Iwaki
The pottery field trip was a success! We had about a dozen
people meeting promptly at the
Garden Center at 9AM. We all caravanned in 4 vehicles to
our first destination, Oriental Arts in San Jose. They
typically open in the afternoon, 5 days a week, however
Pansy agreed to open for us in the morning. In a large
warehouse, rows and rows of high quality Chinese pots,
accent plant size to very large were available at wholesale
prices. Also on display and for purchase were lacquer
painted stands, even available for Shohin Bonsai.
Next we drove to Bonsai Fusion, 15 minutes away. In
contrast they make their pots, typically for accent plants
and Shohin, in a 15' x 15' space. They greeted us with
smiles and hospitality, even letting whoever that wanted to
to throw their own pots. Myself as well as 4 or 5 others did
so, with Hamajima's guidance. For those of you that made
pots, I will be picking them up later this month, once they
have been glazed and fired. Finally, we met at a local park
for lunch. The sun was out and everyone seemed satisfied
with their purchases. After all the rain we've been getting,
it was a great way to end a trip.

logo that can be embroidered onto clothing. They have

members to use.
You must order 4 items at a time, but they can be different
items and different sizes etc. The directions for doing this
are written below

Basic Workshop
This March Gordon Deeg will again teach a basic bonsai
workshop on four Tuesday nights at the San Mateo Garden
Center, Rose room.
The dates are March 9, 16,23,30. Note changed dates.
The cost will be $40 to cover the room rent and is nonrefundable
if you miss a class.
The workshop revolves around one tree so if you need
something to work on Gordon offers his services at the
Mammoth Fundraiser Feb.28 to help you find a tree and
pot.
Sign ups will continue at the February meeting,
maximum of 10 people.
