Handout #1: Learning Banking Basics Skit
Cast of characters:
Narrator (teacher)
Michelle
Piggy Bank
Parent
Michelle’s younger brother
Banker
Narrator: Michelle was pretty good with her money. Each week she would receive her
allowance from her mom/dad.
Parent should hand one balloon to Michelle.
Narrator: And then Michelle would deposit her money into her piggy bank.
Michelle hands the balloon to Piggy Bank.
Narrator: Weeks went by and each week Michelle would get her money and put it in the Piggy
Bank.
Parent continues to hand one balloon at a time to Michelle. Michelle should continue to hand the
balloons to Piggy Bank whose arms should be getting pretty full of balloons. When the Piggy
Bank has been fumbling around, dropping and picking up balloons, for a while move on to this…
Narrator: After weeks and weeks of saving, Michelle realized that her Piggy Bank was
overflowing with money.
Michelle: Oh my! My piggy bank is overflowing with money! I guess I’ll just put this money
next to the piggy bank for now until I figure out something else to do with it. It should be safe
there.
Have Michelle put balloons by Piggy Bank’s feet.
Narrator: Michelle thought this was a good idea until she began to suspect her younger brother
thought it was a good idea too.
1
Younger brother crawls through and snatches a few balloons and runs off stage.
Michelle: That’s it! I’ve got to do something better with this money!
Narrator: Michelle decided it was time for something new—a safer alternative for her money.
She decided she would take her money to the bank.
Michelle, holding some money in her arms and pulling Piggy Bank along with her, should walk
over to the other side of the classroom where the banker is sitting at a desk.
Michelle: Hi! I would like to open an account here.
Banker: Welcome to the YoungSavers Bank of ________ (whatever city you’re located in). I’d
love to help you set up a bank account! Let’s just have you fill out these forms.
Banker hands Michelle some sheets of paper and Michelle pretends to fill them in.
Narrator: The banker explained to Michelle how safe her money would be in the bank. She told
her that only she or her parents would have access to the account and that the government would
guarantee her money—so even if the bank was robbed or if it burned down in a fire, Michelle’s
money would still be safe.
Michelle: Wow, this is a great place to store my money! Not even pesky little brothers can get
their hands on my money in here!
Banker: And there’s something else—while you’re money is in a savings account here, you’ll
be earning money on it called ‘interest’. It’s kind of like your money is growing.
Michelle: Great! I’d like to put all this money into an account.
Banker: That’s called making a deposit and it’s easy to do. Just fill out this slip and hand over
the money.
Have Michelle fill out a small piece of paper that looks like a deposit slip and hand it and the
money to the banker. Have the banker put the money in a large trash bag that all the balloons
will fit in.
Banker: Alright! Here’s the amount of money that’s in your account. It’s called the balance.
Michelle: Well, this all sounds great, but what do I do if I need to get some of my money out of
the bank?
Banker: That’s easy. You would just come by the bank and make a withdrawal. You would just
fill out a withdrawal form and hand it to me. Then I’ll get you your money and tell you your new
balance.
Michelle: Well, that sounds easy enough. I’ll leave my money here and come back again soon.
Thanks for your help!
Banker: No problem! See you soon!
Michelle and Piggy Bank leave the desk area and go back to the center of the front of the room.
Narrator: Michelle felt much better now that her money was at the bank. She sat down in her
room and pulled out a book to read. She remembered what the banker said about her money
growing by just being in her savings account. She could picture her money growing at this very
moment.
Michelle should sit on the floor with a book and begin to daydream.
The banker should pull out an uninflated balloon and very slowly begin to blow it up. Once it’s
full, tie up the balloon and add it to the bag with Michelle’s other “money.”
Narrator: Michelle and her piggy bank were both happy with this new set up! Her brother, on
the other hand, was not so pleased…
Michelle’s brother looks all around the room for the balloons but can’t find any. He raises his
arms in frustration.
Brother: Where’s the money?!?!
Michelle: Easy there brother, let me teach you a thing or two about saving…
Michelle puts an arm around the brother and they walk off stage.
The end.
