INDEPENDENT or DIRECTED STUDIES COURSE APPROVAL FORM
DEFINITION AND APPROVAL. This form is to be completed by students intending to register in an
Independent or Directed Studies course. These courses allow a student to pursue a specific area of
interest in more depth and rigor than normally would be possible in regular course offerings. The
student will receive undergraduate credit for the course. All such courses must receive final approval
by the Associate Dean (Students or Interdisciplinary as appropriate), Faculty of Arts.
CHOOSING A SUPERVISOR: Before a student may register in an Independent of Directed Study
course, s/he must first seek out an academic supervisor. The supervisor may be a faculty member
from the Faculty of Arts or from another Faculty or department. Please note: if a supervisor is chosen
from another faculty or department, the course must comply with the interdisciplinary mandate of the
Faculty of Arts. Because of the labour-intensive nature of directed study, faculty members are under
no obligation to take on Independent or Directed Study students and will only do so if they see
potential for a highly successful research experience for the student.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES: This form should be completed by the student, the course
supervisor and approved by the Department Head/Program Coordinator before submission to the
Associate Dean at the Program Information Centre, Social Science 110. The student must also attach
a brief course outline. No further action will be required on the part of the student unless further
clarification is required by the Department or Associate Deans. Once approved, a decimal number will
be assigned to the course and the student will be automatically registered.
SECTION 1 – OUTLINE OF RESPONSIBILITIES
RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENT: To create and attach a brief course outline which includes
expectations on material to be covered, readings and assessments. To ensure that the approved
Independent/Directed Study course will not exceed five half-courses in the term chosen. To ensure
that all appropriate fees have been paid in accordance with fee deadlines as outlined in the Academic
Calendar.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF SUPERVISOR: To ensure that the title chosen for the course is appropriate
for the material to be covered; that academic integrity and rigor are maintained at the level
appropriate for that of the course; to be available to the student as necessary to facilitate the
completion of the course.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF DEPARTMENT HEAD/PROGRAM COORDINATOR: Through review of the
application and course outline, academic standards of the Department/Program are deemed satisfied.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF ASSOCIATE DEAN: Final approval given which indicates that course rigor
is consistent across the Faculty.
