What is 4-H?<br />

4-H is the Youth Development Program of the<br />

University of California Cooperave Extension in<br />

conjuncon with the United States Department of<br />

Agriculture. Through project work, 4-H members<br />

learn life skills such as leadership, public speaking,<br />

record keeping, and career development. Volunteer<br />

leaders are caring adults who are carefully screened<br />

and trained to provide clubs with direcon and guidance,<br />

and may not charge for their me.<br />

Who May Join?<br />

Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Members:<br />

Any youth who is 9 years old or in the 4th grade<br />

through age 18 as of January 1 of the program year<br />

and may connue in the program unl the end of the<br />

calendar year in which they become 19 years of age.<br />

Primary Member: Must be 5 years old or in kindergarten<br />

by January 1 of the program year. Approved<br />

animal projects are dogs, rabbits, rats, cats, poultry,<br />

cavies, mice, pygmy goats, and therapeuc animal<br />

projects. (Youth enrolling or turning nine aer<br />

January 1 must parcipate as a Primary Member<br />

unl the end of the program year.)<br />

Home Schooled Members: Children are to enroll<br />

based on their chronological age, as of January 1 of<br />

the program year.<br />

How Do I Sign Up for 4-H?<br />

The <strong>Lassen</strong> <strong>County</strong> 4-H Program runs from Sept. 1—<br />

Aug. 31. We have seven community clubs, which<br />

begin enrolling starng Sept. 1 through Nov. 1.<br />

A family may join the club which meets closest to<br />

their home or school or another club of their choice.<br />

Each club offers projects based upon its leaders’<br />

interests abilies, so different projects will be<br />

offered in each club. We also have many countywide<br />

projects available to all members. Parents are<br />

expected to take an acve role in their family’s club.<br />

If you would like an 4-H Informaon Packet mailed<br />

to you, please contact the 4-H Office at 251-8285.<br />

How Much Does 4-H Cost to Join?<br />

The enrollment fee is $40 for a youth member and $15 for<br />

a adult volunteer leader. The fee is for the 4-H accident/<br />

illness insurance coverage for the year. 4-H families are<br />

responsible for all project expenses. All 4-H adult leaders<br />

are volunteers; they are not paid for and may not charge<br />

for their me.<br />

4-H Roundup Newsleer—The newsleer is published<br />

ten months out of the year to inform members, leaders<br />

and parents about club, county, state and naonal 4-H<br />

opportunies. Copies can be found on our 4-H website .<br />
