This month at Focus HQ we are celebrating our 

10th birthday of the magazine. There are a lot 

of advertisers that have been with me since the 

beginning. Not only am I grateful to their loyalty 

over the year but it’s to recognise that through 

the financial climate of ups and downs their 

businesses are still doing well and offering us 

great local services and products. 

As you know each month the magazine is full of local articles, 

events and information. Many readers tell me how important this 

is to them and how much they rely on the Focus each month. 

I’d like to thank all of my advertising customers as you make this

that support our community. We are giving to the community 

together.

Studiocrafts 

Opening shortly in Ledbury is ‘Studiocrafts’ a new space offering workshops in all 

things arts and crafty. Some of you will know us already, Susan, retired principal of 

neat feet dancing and Frances who supported and helped to make the wonderful 

costumes for the shows. Two years on from closing the dance school and a throw 

away remark over coffee about it being a good space for crafting... and here we are, 

Studiocrafts, a new life for the studio. 

We will be offering and teaching 

workshops for all ages and 

budgets, as well as inviting other 

artists/crafts people to widen 

the range further. So far we have 

planned: book sculptures – an 

ideal fathers day present, - sew 

a child’s summer hat, a girls 

skirt, bags and coming up in 

November lots of Christmas 

ideas for decorations and 

presents as well as a nutcracker 

ballet workshop. Later on we will 

be offering children’s crafting 

parties at the studio. 

Being part of the community and 

offering charity provision is very 

important to us and so we are 

going to launch Studiocrafts on 

17 May by part organising and 

hosting a Dress A Girl Around 

the World charity event, making 

dresses from pillowcases for girls 

who are less fortunate. It is a 

drop in sewing session between 

10.00 – 4.00 and we would love 

to see you there. 

The first Friday morning of every 

month from September we will 

be hosting ‘chat ‘n’ craft for 

charity’. Come for refreshments 

and a chat whilst making 

something for yours or another 

charity. Crafts include pillowcase 

dresses, knitted teddies for 

tragedy, hats for baby units 

and more. Let us know if we 

can make something for your 

charity. 

On 6 June we will be opening our 

doors for Ledbury Community 

Day with free mini workshops 

running throughout the day see

Prescription Charges 

From 1 April this year 

prescription charges have 

increased by 15 pence from 

£8.05 to £8.20 for each 

medicine needed. Some 

people automatically get free 

prescriptions, for example 

children under 16, adults over 

60, people with certain medical 

conditions or pregnant . Other 

people can get an exemption 

certificate to obtain free 

prescriptions. Also, anyone 

needing regular prescriptions 

may save money by buying 

a Prescription Prepayment 

Certificate which costs £29.10 for 

three months or £104 for a year. 

Dental charges under the 

NHS for a band one course of 

treatment have increased by 

30p from £18.50 to £18.80. A 

band 2 course of treatment has 

increased by 80p from £50.50 

to £51.30 and a band 3 course 

of treatment has increased by 

£3.50 from £219 to £222.50. 

Apparently 90% of patients 

do not pay for prescriptions in 

England while no-one pay in 

Scotland and Wales. If you are on 

a low income and have less than 

£16,000 savings, and you are not 

already exempt from charge, you 

can apply for full or partial help 

with health costs with form HC1 

(available in Age UK office). 

Driving Licence Changes 

From 8 June 2015, the paper 

counterpart to the photocard 

driving licence will not be valid 

and will no longer be issued 

by DVLA. The counterpart was 

introduced to display driving 

licence details that could not 

be included on the photocard. 

These details include some 

vehicle categories you are 

entitled to drive and any 

endorsement/penalty points.

Huge court fee increases of up to 

600 per cent needs highlighting, 

say Ledbury Law Firm 

Massive fee increases of up to 600% for bringing a money 

claim case to court have been put in place in the past few 

weeks, but it hasn’t been making mainstream news, says 

Daljit Bhogal of DF Legal.

The Government confirmed in 

January that the fee for issuing 

a civil claim worth more than 

£10,000 would be increased to 

5% of the sum claimed, with a 

maximum fee set at £10,000. 

The move followed a 

consultation that prompted 

criticism from many of the 

judicial systems senior legal 

figures, as well as the country’s 

business community. The 

concerns include the risk that 

higher fees would limit justice 

to those with financial means. 

Under the new rules, fees on 

a claim worth £200,000 have 

been raised by £8,725, whilst 

previously the maximum 

charge for claims over 

£300,000 was £1,920 but the 

new requirements herald an 

increase of £8,080 or 421%. 

We can see it really affecting 

businesses and believe many 

companies in supply chains 

could be unwilling to use the 

courts to resolve long running 

late payment disputes. 

It may not deter the giants of 

industry, but it certainly will be 

difficult for small businesses. 

The Government has stopped 

short of raising the cost of 

getting a divorce and other fee 

reforms probably as no doubt 

they know the outcry would 

be loud. They claim the vast 

majority of cases would not be 

affected by the introduction 

of the enhanced charge and 

that the money raised will 

go towards improving court 

services. 

Only time will tell if the court 

system, which has more than 

its fair share of criticism, will 

improve, but this just doesn’t 

feel like a great move for our 

democracy.

What to do and where to go in May 

with Herefordshire Wildlife Trust 

In the garden 

Wildlife is certainly making its 

presence felt in our gardens 

this month and while keen 

gardeners may be itching to 

prune, cut and chop, can we 

make a plea for keeping some 

areas of the garden a bit wild 

for wildlife? 

Birds are nesting and fledging 

in our gardens throughout 

May. With nests hidden away 

in hedges, trees and shrubs, 

it’s best to leave the hedge 

trimmers in the shed until later 

in the year. And if you do find a 

seemingly abandoned fledgling 

it’s really best to leave it – 

often its parents are close at 

hand and intervention can do 

more harm than good. 

A pile of logs in a shady corner 

provides a perfect habitat 

for frogs and toads as well as 

a multitude of mini-beasts 

including the rare stag beetle. 

Hedgehogs will also head here 

for their autumn hibernation. 

Log piles needn’t look scruffy 

though – planting ferns and 

other shade-loving plants 

between and around the 

area will create a beautiful 

woodland garden. 

When choosing plants for the 

garden, consider ones which 

will be beneficial for bees 

and other pollinators. Luckily, 

these include many useful 

and beautiful species! Fresh 

herbs are not only great in the 

kitchen - rosemary, chives, 

mint and lavender will hum 

with insect life throughout the 

summer - while the elegantly 

drooping buddleia is famous for 

attracting butterflies. Sowing 

wildflowers brings a relaxed, 

naturalistic style to the borders 

– try including species such as 

poppies, cornflowers, purple 

loosetrife and scabious. 

Out in the countryside 

May is a magical time in the 

countryside. Bluebells and 

swathes of ramsons fill the 

woodlands and blossom 

decorates the hedgerows and 

crowns the orchards. Where 

to head in Herefordshire? The 

Herefordshire Wildlife Trust has 

over 50 reserves filled with new 

spring life – here’s one idea for 

starters... 

Lea and Paget’s Wood on the 

Woolhope Dome is an ancient 

woodland which is one of the 

best spots for bluebells. Follow 

the Wye Valley walk through 

this wood to Common Hill. 


Bluebell Walk 

Saturday 16th May, 10am–12 noon 

Part of Herefordshire Wildlife Trust’s 

Woolhope Dome series of events, join 

volunteer warden Martin Hales for a guided 

walk through the bluebells in Lea & Paget’s 

Wood. 

The higher areas are managed as traditional 

meadow and pasture and here you will find 

early purple orchids and cowslips amongst 

the grasses as well as a flutter of butterflies 

including marbled whites and the rarer wood 

white. Lower down the sloping grassland you 

will find an orchard of beautiful aged fruit trees 

as well as newly planted trees, propagated 

from old Herefordshire varieties – all in 

blossom at this time of year.

Fossils, Forts and Flora Walk 

Sunday 24th May, 10am-5pm 

Walk led by Doug Lloyd and Nic Howes, 

part of Herefordshire Wildlife Trust’s 

Woolhope Dome series of events. Join us 

for the day (or the morning) to take in 

the geology, habitats and wildlife of the 

Woolhope Dome. We will be visiting 3 

of Herefordshire Wildlife Trust’s nature 

reserves on the way: Wessington Pasture, 

Common Hill and Nupend Wood. The day 

will be divided into two with the morning 

walk running from 10am to 1pm and the 

afternoon walk from 1.30pm to 5pm. 

We will stop for lunch in between at the 

Moon pub at Mordiford and there will be 

a minibus back to the start of the walk for 

those only staying for the morning. 

WildPlay Play Day at Eastnor 

Castle Sunday 6th June, 11amm-4pm. 

Join the WildPlay team for den building, 

mud kitchen mayhem, a blindfold rope 

trail and bug hunting. WildPlay is based at 

Herefordshire Wildlife Trust and creates 

playful opportunities for children across 

Herefordshire to explore nature outdoors. 

Badger Watching For Families 

Saturday 13th June, 7pm-10pm 

Join volunteer reserve warden Liam Bunce 

to see the badgers at Wessington Pastures. 

The evening will include a walk around the 

reserve and time in the Badger Hide. Part

Saturday 6th June, with 

most events taking place 

between 10am and 2pm. 

Join us in celebrating and 

finding out more about the 

wide range of voluntary groups 

and organisations in Ledbury. 

Local groups and organisations 

of all kinds will be on hand to 

show us what they do, invite 

us to join them, seek opinions, 

encourage participation, raise 

money, and entertain us. 

Last year 65 organisations 

took part. All the venues were 

buzzing with people, not least 

the British Legion with the Old 

Ledbury photo show. 

Youth took over the Community 

Hall and put on a splendid 

display of singing, music and 

martial arts. St Katherine’s 

Hall had everything from the 

Town Council, via the Master’s 

House, the Rugby Club, and 

Amnesty International to Marie 

Curie Cancer – any many others 

besides.

the opening after restoration of 

the Master’s House.

At the Burgage Hall, we could

Curie Ledbury Fundraising Group for

Great Daffodil Appeal at collections in

External Parasites of Dogs 

Fleas & Ticks 

With the warmer weather 

this summertime fleas and 

ticks have become extremely 

prevalent, and it has been 

an especially good year for 

ticks. Dogs and cats are out 

more exploring and hunting 

in the sunshine; parasites are 

a problem all year round but 

mainly they are a problem in 

the summertime. 

They are particularly rife in some 

areas especially where there is 

rough foliage and bracken. Thus 

if you take your dog on holiday 

to Exmoor or the New Forest etc 

it is almost guaranteed that you 

dog will become infested with 

ticks In our area, particularly the 

Malvern and Eastnor area, you 

are particularly likely to get a 

tick problem. However, ticks can 

simply be picked up in your back 

garden. 

Ticks are free living 

parasites which recognise 

warm-bodied animals and 

then jump on to it, they 

then latch on and suck 

their blood, this can cause 

irritation and localised 

infection and they 

sometimes carry diseases 

such as Lyme disease. 

Our record is having a dog with 

135 ticks! Fleas tend to multiply 

within the house and with the 

warmer weather we have seen 

much more flea issues and flea 

allergy problems, in cats as 

well as dogs. Fleas are present 

all year round and become 

more prevalent in the warmer 

weather. 

There are numerous ways of 

treating a dog for fleas but some 

of the old preparations are not 

particularly affective. We tend to 

use spot-on preparations which 

also kill mites and lungworm.

or now there is a new tablet 

called Bravecto which covers fleas 

and ticks for three months with a

Community Action in order to 

see what could be done.

Community Action New Home - On March the 2nd 2015 Community Action moved in to the 

Masters House in St Katherine’s having both the office and the Mobility Centre in the same 

location. The Community Action is now located in the first office on the right as you enter 

through the main door. 

The result of this was that every 

day from Monday 14th April to 

Thursday 23rd April inclusive 

there was a volunteer driver in 

one of the Community Action 

Ledbury minibuses on stand-by. 

On Monday, Wednesday and 

Friday, Ledbury Town Council, 

took Ledbury residents who 

had pre-booked a place on the 

minibus to Colwall Post Office 

and brought them back! On 

Tuesdays and Thursdays, under 

the auspices of Ledbury Rotary 

Club, it went to Bromesberrow 

Shop which has a ‘pop-up’ Post 

Office on those days in the 

morning every week. 

Passengers where residents of 

Ledbury who had no other way 

of getting to a Post Office during 

the closure who had personal 

matters to attend do. Passengers 

were charged £1 per return trip. 

Community Sing Along Success 

On the 21st of March Friends 

of Community Action Ledbury 

(FOCAL) held a community sing 

along in order to raise funds for 

the work of Community Action. 

Organised by Adrian Silcock and 

lead by Colin Myles the day was 

a great success. 

The day started at 11 am and 

included Songs from the Shows, 

Ballard’s and Folksongs, Old 

time and Nostalgia, Songs of 

Praise and a final Hallelujah 

before 5pm. Cakes and 

refreshments where available 

all throughout the day. The 

day was well attended and a 

number of people who attended 

commented that it was the most 

fun that they had had in over 10 

years!

Football Fledglings 

This month, Ledbury based Football Fledglings are 

celebrating seven years of fun goal scoring action for 

children aged 18 months to 8 years of age. Football 

Fledglings is an indoor sports activity, devised by West 

Bromwich Albion football Coach Allan Hawkins who 

grew the idea working alongside child care professionals 

to put together a programme of key elements which 

are wrapped around an objective of building confidence, 

improving balance, agility and co-ordination, all keys 

essentials to performing any form of sport or agility. 

From the early days, Football 

Fledglings has expanded to 

provide sessions across the West 

Midlands through working with 

county education authorities, 

schools and playgroups besides 

running their own weekly 

sessions on Saturday morning 

at the Ledbury Leisure Centre in 

the grounds of John Masefield 

High School. 

Talking to Ledbury Focus, Allan 

said “Whether working with 

professionals or young children, 

the same rules apply. If the 

session is fun and engaging the 

individual will learn and there 

is nothing more rewarding as a 

coach to see youngsters having 

fun with the best sport in the 

world, after all, who wouldn’t 

enjoy scoring great goals… It is 

just that we have children from 

eighteen months old doing it! 

All coaching staff are passionate 

about the coaching and welfare 

of the children, are DBS 

checked, hold safeguarding 

children certification and either

Creating Your Garden Paradise

May Time 

Last month’s warmer weather 

and the longer daylight hours 

have produced lots of new 

growth in the garden. But there 

may be some exceptions, some 

gaps, perhaps due to damage or 

especially that bare patch that 

has annoyed you all winter as 

you looked out of the window. 

May is a popular time to head 

off to the garden centre for new 

plants to fill those gaps. Let us 

consider what to look for when 

buying a new plant. 

At the garden centre you will 

see a vast selection of beautiful 

plants and shrubs and your heart 

can easily rule your head. Back 

to reality. My advice is to think 

first and do a little research. By 

this I don’t necessarily mean 

read hundreds of books, but it is 

important is to look carefully the 

gap or space you are trying to fill. 

Is the area sheltered or exposed 

to winds? Is it shaded for part of 

the day from a nearby tree? For 

example a Japanese acer does 

not like to be in full sun in a very 

dry area. What type of soil do 

you have; is it sandy or clay, rich 

or poor? This information will 

guide you to choose the plants 

which will flourish in your garden 

and steer you away from others 

that may not. 

Make time to look at what plants 

and shrubs are growing near to 

the space you want to fill. When 

do they come into flower? Do 

you want your new plant to 

flower at the same time, or a 

different time? This where some 

research is called for, where you 

may want to look at a book or 

two or seek professional advice. 

So yes, enjoy your visit to the 

garden centre but go prepared, 

At the garden centre: 

Once you have chosen the 

variety of plant for your garden 

there may be rows of them, so 

which one to choose? First of all, 

is it looking healthy? Discoloured 

leaves or stems could be due to 

lack of water. Lack of water can 

put the plant under stress and 

this is when disease can get a 

hold. Choose from fresh stock 

if possible but be wary that it 

may have been brought in from 

overseas and may still be a little 

tender in any cold weather. 

Another thing to look out for 

is a plant being too pot bound. 

Signs to look for are a tight 

ball of roots, roots coming out 

of the bottom of the pot, or 

weeds growing around the 

top of the pot suggesting the 

plant has been in the pot for a 

long time. Provided the plant is 

healthy, its roots can be prised 

apart a little when planted out. 

Planting: 

If your plant is very dry in its 


pot, it take it out and soak it in a 

bucket of water for half an hour 

before planting. Dig a hole one 

and half times the size of the pot. 

In very heavy clay, make sure 

you add lots of organic matter or 

compost into the bottom of the 

hole. Use a fork to make holes in 

the sides as you do not want to 

create a pocket where water can 

sit without draining as this will 

rot the roots of your new plant. 

In clay soil, remove the diggings 

and add new soil to fill up the 

hole. If the soil quality is poor, 

mix a little bone meal and potash 

into the soil and fork in evenly 

around the plant. Use your heel 

to firm the soil around the new 

plant. Don’t set your new plant 

too deeply as this can cause it 

to rot. Don’t set your new plant 

too high or mound up the soil 

otherwise, when you water the 

water will run off. 

Garden Tasks for May: 

• Earth up potatoes, and 

promptly plant any still 

remaining, “Earth up” potatoes 

means to mound up the soil 

around them. This helps to 

produce more potatoes. 

• Plant out summer bedding at 

the end of the month (except in 

cold areas) 

• Regularly hoe off weeds. This 

will save time later as it is quicker 

to hoe smaller weeds now with 

less to pick up. 

• Open greenhouse vents and 

doors on warm days to help with 

ventilation. The movement of air 

stops pest and diseases getting 

a hold and fruit and veg. such as 

tomatoes to rot. 

• Lift and divide overcrowded 

clumps of daffodils and other 

spring-flowering bulbs

specimen plants for that wow 

factor.

Visitors and Summer Arrivals 

Over the Easter weekend 

spring began to warm up 

and as it did, so too did the 

slow worms. I saw one, still 

sluggish, on the edge of the 

woods. It was catching a beam 

of sunlight through the trees 

before slinking away. Slow 

worms are not usually slow, 

but at the beginning of April 

they are only just emerging 

from hibernation and this one 

hadn’t quite got up to speed. 

I often find slow worms in my 

compost bins, which makes 

turning the compost impossible 

as I’m always worried that I will 

accidentally spear one. So I’ve 

decided to make a dedicated 

slow worm composter in another 

part of the garden where I think 

the habitat is ideal for them. I 

will also lay down a small sheet 

of corrugated tin for them to lie 

under and this year I intend to 

make some ‘dead hedges’ that 

will create corridors for them and 

other creatures to use. 

It was a busy weekend for 

wildlife visitors. I had only just 

mentioned that I would have 

to start preparing the for the 

return of the swallows, which 

means swathing the contents 

of the garage in sheets and 

the following day, while I was 

splitting and transplanting 

michaelmas daises, I heard a 

familiar chattering above me. 

There was the male, on its 

favourite perch, the TV ariel, 

cheerfully chirruping away. I 

have never had them arrive this 

early before and was completely 

taken by surprise. I wondered 

whether some of its enthusiastic 

twitter was as much to do with 

relief at having got here as it 

was to announcing its arrival in 

its summer territory. It stayed 

for a couple of days, before 

disappearing, which is the usual 

habit for the swallows here, they 

then return a few days later. 

At the time of writing this I’m 

waiting for the second return. 

An early morning visitor really 

did surprise me, a buzzard 

was rummaging around in the 

orchard intently looking for 

something, finding it and eating 

it. I assumed that it was worms 

and judging by the length of time 

it was there, this particularly bird 

of prey was getting a feast for 

breakfast. 

You often see Buzzards in 

ploughed fields foraging for 

exactly the same thing, which 

always seems incongruous to me 

when you consider the grace and 

power of these raptors, this one 

almost perfectly camouflaged 

against the bark of an apple tree.

Pension Investments 

and Buy to Let 

From 6th April 2015 everyone over the age of 55 with a defined contribution 

pension will be able to access their entire pension fund if they wish. Previously, 

most people bought an annuity or guaranteed income with their pension pot and 

this may still be the right course of action for many. Others will embrace the new 

freedom and look for other forms of investment – including Buy to Let. This article 

is not the place to discuss the merits of Buy to Let over other more conventional 

types of pension investments merely to highlight some of the legal and other issues 

that arise in becoming a Landlord – perhaps for the first time. 

• Choose your tenants 

carefully. If you use a managing 

agent to find a tenant, they 

should carry out credit checks 

and take up references on the 

prospective tenant-ideally 

from a previous Landlord. 

Be business-like and if the 

prospective tenants cannot 

provide references think long 

and hard as to whether you 

want them in your property. 

• Use an Assured Short-hold 

Tenancy agreement suitable for 

your property. For example, if 

the property has a garden make 

sure that it contains provisions 

for the tenant to look after it. 

The tenancy should normally 

be for six months only even 

if the tenants intend to stay 

longer. You can always allow 

the tenant to ‘hold over’ after 

the six month period without a 

new agreement. On the other 

hand, if things are not working 

out you have the freedom to 

end the tenancy and find a 

new tenant. 

• Take a rent deposit. Make 

sure it is sufficient to cover 

your losses and is registered 

in an authorized tenancy 

deposit scheme. If it is not, you 

cannot repossess the property 

or enforce the terms of the 

agreement. 

• Make a Schedule of 

Condition. This can be done by 

you or your managing agent 

and usually consists of a series 

of photographs to provide 

a record of the condition of

it easier to resolve disputes 

regarding damage to the 

property which might arise at 

the end of the tenancy. 

• Make an inventory. If the 

property is furnished or partly 

furnished, have the tenant sign 

a list of all the contents so that 

you can be sure that they are 

all returned with the property 

at the end of the tenancy. 

Without this, how can you 

prove what was included ? 

• Remember it takes time to 

recover possession. When 

you want to sell the property, 

you will probably need to 

obtain vacant possession. If 

your tenant does not leave 

voluntarily when requested, 

you have to serve two months 

written notice and then issue 

proceedings in the County 

Court for possession. Any other 

method of ‘persuading’ the 

tenant to leave is likely to be a 

criminal offence. 

• Keep proper accounts and 

receipts. The expenses you 

incur on the property including 

mortgage interest will usually 

be tax deductible either against 

the rent (Income Tax purposes) 

or against the sale proceeds (for 

Capital Gains Tax purposes). 

• Select a good managing 

agent. You can of course 

manage the property yourself 

and you may make more 

money by doing so. The cost 

of a good managing agent 

however will be tax deductible 

and will probably re-pay the 

outlay. A good agent should 

respond quickly and efficiently 

to the legitimate questions and 

concerns of your tenant. They 

will have a good network of 

reliable contractors who should 

be able to respond quickly, 

if for example the central 

heating breaks down over the 

Christmas holidays. 

If all of the above sounds too 

daunting then perhaps an 

annuity or more traditional 

investment would be a safer 

home for your pension fund. 

The British love affair however 

with bricks and mortar is likely 

to continue and our hunch is 

that a good proportion of the 

newly available pension money 

will find its way into the Buy to 

Let market.

Forensic Property Marking

Are you struggling with 

your weight? 

- by Helen Mawson, BSc Hons, DipM 

If the answer to this question is yes, you are not alone, astonishingly two 

in five woman and one in six men are dissatisfied with their weight or 

shape and are on a permanent diet! There are so many different diets 

available at the moment that it is difficult to know what is the most 

appropriate for your body. 

All about balance 

I have found the word balance 

to be one of the most important 

when considering our diet and 

our health in general. True 

balance is not about denying 

ourselves the occasional coffee, 

chocolate bar or glass of wine 

it’s about eating good quality 

healthy foods most of the time 

and also what we occasionally 

fancy as a treat. Obviously if 

you are working with a specific 

illness or dietary requirement 

then this principle will vary. 

With any eating regime the body 

needs to be in as balanced a 

state as possible if you are to 

achieve the best outcome. 

The Bowen technique 

Bowen is a holistic therapy 

which offers a unique approach 

in assisting with weight loss 

helping you to let go of the 

weight you no longer need. In 

practice I will use procedures 

that address the parts of your 

body that are not working 

as well as they could be. 

Specifically we may need to 

look at upper digestion, or 

issues lower down the digestive 

system, alternatively we may 

focus on the hormonal system 

for example. 

As part of my training I have 

learnt about nutrition, traditional 

Chinese medicine and many 

other techniques that allow me 

to address issues with weight. 

Back to basics 

When I work with people I 

focus on the basic principles of 

nutrition, incorporating balanced 

quantities of carbohydrates, 

proteins, fats, and vegetation 

and plenty of variation within 

these parameters. The following 

information highlights general 

guidelines for quantities of the 

main food groups: 

15 % Protein – The 25 different 

amino acids which are forms of 

protein and literally “building 

blocks” for our bodies are used 

to make hormones, enzymes, 

antibodies and neurotransmitters 

and help transport substances 

around the body. 

Optimal protein intake for an 

adult is around 35 grams. Best 

quality protein in terms of amino 

acid content includes; eggs, 

quinoa, meat, fish, beans and 

lentils. Meat protein sources 

tend to contain more saturated 

fats than vegetable or cereal 

sources and are also acid 

forming. Vegetable or cereal 

based amino acids tend to have 

additional health benefits and 

are generally better absorbed 

than animal protein. 


Dehydration- The body needs water 

to function properly. When dehydration 

occurs the body systems do not perform 

as well and elimination is significantly 

impaired. Getting into the habit of 

drinking pure water will help the body in 

many ways but will also aid weight loss. 

70 % Carbohydrates - the 

main fuel for the body and 

come in 2 forms; fast releasing 

including sugar, honey, malts, 

refined foods, and slow 

releasing including whole grains, 

vegetables, and fresh fruits. 

Slow releasing or complex 

carbohydrates work to slow 

down the release of sugar 

providing a more sustained 

energy release. Fast releasing 

carbohydrates provide a fast 

burst of energy and are best kept 

to a minimum. 

15 % Fats – There are basically 2 

types of fat, hard or saturated fat 

and soft or unsaturated fat. It is 

not essential or desirable to eat 

saturated fats. The main sources 

of these fats are meat and dairy. 

There are 2 kinds of unsaturated 

fats; monounsaturated fat such 

as olive oil and polyunsaturated 

fats found in nuts, seeds, and 

fish. Certain polyunsaturated 

fats called omega 3 and 6 are 

essential for brain, nervous 

system, immune system, skin and 

cardiovascular system function. 

The following are guidelines for 

a healthy balanced diet: 

5 servings of vegetables 

3 servings of fruits 

2 servings of protein 

6 servings of complex 

carbohydrates 

2 servings of mineral rich foods 

1 serving of essential fats – 

omega 3, 6 & 9 

2 litres of water per day 

Allergies – when your body does 

not recognise a food an allergic 

reaction occurs, this can cause 

weight gain or loss and often 

needs to be addressed. 

Intolerance - you may be 

consuming too much of a 

substance for your body to deal 

with and therefore causing 

your system to become toxic or 

overloaded. 

Hormonal Imbalance – 

Hormones are responsible 

for regulating metabolism, 

appetite control, blood sugar, 

reproduction and so much 

more. If this complex system 

isn’t working properly problems 

with weight can occur. There are 

specific regimes that will help to 

balance hormones which will aid 

weight loss, the leptin diet being 

one. 

Psychological / Emotional Issues 

– when we are feeling bored or 

low in mood we are more likely 

to overeat or eat the foods that 

are not so healthy. Stressful 

events or traumas from the past 

may be the root cause of our 

weight issues and may need to be 

resolved before we can move on.

burgers 

2 tbsp sunflower oil 

150g chopped onion 

1 tsp garlic 

300g mashed potato 

400g tin butter beans, drained 

and rinsed 

1 medium free-range egg, 

beaten 

120g cooked chopped spinach, 

50g lighter mature British 

Cheddar, grated 

1 tsp dried thyme 

40g fine breadcrumbs 

1. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a 

small frying pan and fry the 

chopped onion and garlic for 

5 minutes until softened. Set 

aside. 

2. Pulse the drained butter 

beans in a blender or food 

processor until roughly minced. 

Add the beans to the mashed 

potato with the fried onion and 

garlic, egg, spinach, cheese and 

thyme. Mix well, then season 

to taste. 

3. Divide and shape the mixture 

into 8 patties, then coat in 

breadcrumbs. 

4. Heat the remaining oil in a 

large non-stick frying pan and 

fry the burgers for 1-2 minutes 

on each side until golden. Serve 

with salad or in a roll. 

Rhubarb pudding 

Cut the rhubarb into bite-size batons. Combine the rest 

with a sprinkling of caster sugar and the orange zest and 

juice in a pan and gently cook for 5-10 minutes until the 

rhubarb begins to soften. Set aside to cool. 

500g rhubarb 

100g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling 

Grated zest and juice of 1 orange 

100g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 

3 tbsp golden syrup 

1 vanilla pod, split and scraped 

2 large free-range eggs 

Grated zest of 1 lemon 

100g self-raising flour 

50ml milk 

Butter a 1-litre pudding basin and place the reserved 

rhubarb pieces in the bottom of the basin, then drizzle 

over the golden syrup. 

In a bowl or mixer, beat the butter, sugar and vanilla 

together until creamy and light. Add the eggs, 1 at a time. 

Beat in the lemon zest. 

Sift over half the flour and gently fold into the mixture. 

Add a little milk to loosen, then sift in the rest of the flour 

and fold into the mixture with the remaining milk. 

Spoon into the pudding basin, cover with a circle of 

baking paper and tie under the rim of the basin with 

kitchen string to secure. Before cutting the string, take 

it up over the top to create a loose handle, then tie 

securely. Trim off any excess baking paper. Place the 

basin in a large pot and pour hot water into the pot until 

it reaches two-thirds of the way up its sides. Cover and 

steam for 1½ hours. Allow the pudding to cool for about 5 

minutes before turning out onto a serving plate.
