By grant<strong>in</strong>g employees leave to undertake <strong>Commonwealth</strong> Professional<br />

Fellowships, home employers anticipate that Fellows will return with<br />

new skills, knowledge and contacts to apply and share with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

organisation. Employers can beg<strong>in</strong> to benefit even while <strong>the</strong>ir Fellows<br />

are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK, as many share <strong>the</strong>ir experiences through blogs and email<br />

updates.<br />

The Butabika L<strong>in</strong>k is about to embark on <strong>the</strong> first phase of an<br />

anti-violence project at Butabika Hospital <strong>in</strong> Uganda – <strong>the</strong><br />

existence of <strong>the</strong> project relates strongly to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Commonwealth</strong><br />

Professional Fellowship scheme. Essentially, most of <strong>the</strong> Fellows<br />

who have come to <strong>the</strong> East London NHS Foundation Trust dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> last five years have received tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> management and<br />

prevention of actual and potential aggression. They were so<br />

impressed with <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and its potential application <strong>in</strong><br />

Uganda that we created a project to tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>er <strong>in</strong> Uganda.<br />

15 staff will be tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> January 2011, to tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir colleagues<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong> year. So, on behalf of <strong>the</strong> L<strong>in</strong>k, thanks to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Commonwealth</strong> Professional Fellowship Scheme for be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

catalyst for this work.<br />

The <strong>Commonwealth</strong> Professional Fellowship scheme has substantially<br />

supported important tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and development of Tanzanian<br />

surgeons to enable <strong>the</strong>m to obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> skills and knowledge<br />

necessary to become <strong>the</strong> first tra<strong>in</strong>ers of laparoscopic surgery<br />

with<strong>in</strong> Tanzania.<br />
