Anyone who is 18 or over and has had art-training or is enrolled in a college or
university art program is eligible to take part in the course.
Eligible for a Certificate in Mural Art issued by Centennial College and Mural
Routes are those individuals who have attended a majority of the four WallArt
THEME
This year’s mural will be part of Amnesty International’s current human rights
mural project. The theme of our mural is Article 7 of the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights: “All are equal before the law and are entitled without any
discrimination to equal protection of the law.” This sentence must form part of the
mural.
DESIGNS
Designs will be discussed at the Design Discussion Meeting on Friday, June 20 at
2PM in room 292 at the Centre for Creative Communications. Designs to scale
(1in=1ft) in full colour must be submitted for final approval at a meeting in the same
place on July 4 at 2PM. A final complete design, possibly an amalgamation of
designs, must be received on July 11.
SITE (Please see photos and measurements below)
The wall provided this year by Toronto Parks & Recreation is in East York’s Taylor
Creek Park (near Woodbine & O’Connor), which is partly a bird sanctuary. The
design will be chosen in consultation with Mural Routes, Parks & Rec. , the
community, and Amnesty International’s Arts in Action Committee.
INSTRUCTOR
Course instructor is well-known muralist John Hood.
CONTENT
environmentally sound clean-up, and long-term preservation.
“All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal
protection before the law.”
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN DESIGNING A MURAL
1. Do research to establish a bank or file of essential imagery that can be used to illustrate
the theme;
2. Think of ways that relate to the thematic material;
3. Think of a dominant mood or emotional tone of the piece and establish a colour palette
and graphic/painterly idiom that suits that tone;
4. Think creatively about using text as a decorative or visual element.
