Welcome Friends
by Jon Partlow
Welcome to West Side Church of Christ’s annual Friends & Family Day. We’ve
been planning on this celebration for a while and looking forward to this day. We’re
excited that you have come to spend your morning with us, and our hope is that you
consider making West Side Church a part of your regular church experience.
No matter how warm the welcome is and how friendly the people are, walking into a
new or different environment can be intimidating. Even the most confident of
people can be intimidated when surrounded by new people or a different setting,
even more so if it’s a new church setting. Who are these people? What is their
worship like? Where are the rest rooms? (btw – they are on the right, just before
entering our auditorium).
When you come to worship at the West Side Church, you will find that our worship
has a simple structure to it. At 10:00 I will extend a formal welcome to our guests
and members. Rocky Rager will lead the church in congregational singing, which is
becoming a lost experience in many churches. We do not have a band, orchestra,
or a praise team. We sing a cappella, without using mechanical instruments. We
will be led in prayer near the beginning and at the end of our worship time.
We believe that partaking the Lord’s Supper/Communion is an important element in
our worship, and we celebrate this Communion every Sunday. Today will be no
different. The Lord’s Supper has a past, present, and future meaning to it. It draws
us to the past where Jesus paid the great sacrifice for our sins by dying on the
cross. The bread represents his body, while the juice represents his blood of the
new covenant. The Supper calls us into the present as a sign of the unity of the
Church; as Paul says, “the one loaf represents one body.” Finally, the Supper
points us forward when Christ returns.
We will take an offering or a collection. While giving is an important commitment for
(see “Welcome” on next page)

"Don't ask me to stay when my heart's already there."
Phyllis Camp
(“Friends Day” Continued) Christians in general, and specifically members of
West Side Church, we do not expect our guests to help finance the church’s
ministries. Please do not feel obligated to make a contribution today.
Finally, I will share good news of hope in a sermon from Scripture. My sermons
generally last about thirty minutes, and I challenge the church in their daily walk with
God. At the end of the sermon I offer an invitation. The invitation is an opportunity
to publically accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior through baptistm, or to ask the
church for forgiveness, or to ask the church for prayers.
Following the sermon, we’ll make some announcements and have a closing prayer.
We’ll then adjourn to the Fellowship Hall to enjoy some good food and each other’s
company, with the biggest treat being servings of homemade ice cream.
We hope today is an uplifting experience, and that you will consider making West
Side Church a part of your continual church experience. Thank you for coming our
way.
