<strong>Course</strong> Description:<br />

This course emphasizes analytic reading, writing, oral communication, and thinking skills that students<br />

need for success in secondary school academic programs and in their daily lives. Students will study and<br />

interpret texts from contemporary and historical periods, and create oral, written, and media texts of<br />

their own. An important focus will be the correct and effective use of spoken and written language. This<br />

course is intended to prepare students for the compulsory Grade 12 University <strong>English</strong> course.<br />

The course also emphasizes paragraph development, current events, and the development of literacy<br />

skills, which will all be addressed as the year unfolds.<br />

effort every day.<br />

You are expected to arrive punctually and be prepared for class each day by having the<br />

necessary materials (course text, <strong>English</strong> binder, paper, a pen) and by completing all<br />

assignments – whether evaluated or not.<br />

You are expected to use class time wisely and recognize when it is appropriate to speak.<br />

When instructions are being delivered, when a classroom discussion is taking place, or when<br />

someone is giving a presentation, you are required to listen attentively so that the<br />

productivity of class time is maximized.<br />
