Southern Europe 

& the Med 

Our tours to Southern Europe and the Mediterranean 

are always popular and we have added some brand 

new destinations for 2014 to complement the old 

favourites. Our inaugural winter tour to Lake Kerkini 

in northern Greece (January 2013) was a big success, 

so we are offering two short breaks there next winter 

plus a brand new week-long holiday in the spring. 

Tours to Portugal, the Canary Islands and Madeira are 

also new and we are introducing four more trips to 

France: The Dordogne for Wallcreepers (February), 

Butterflies (June) and Dragonflies (July), and the 

Cévennes (July). Many of our Southern European 

departures are single-centre holidays, as we are 

finding these are becoming increasingly popular. 

GREECE

Eastern Sicily in Spring

Join us for another wonderful week in Eastern Sicily, a hotspot in spring for

previous tours. Based at a delightful 800-year old masseria (farmhouse hotel), 

with delicious home-cooked Italian cuisine. Our local guide Andrea Corso lives 

in Siracusa and is the island’s foremost ornithologist. Author of the Avifauna 

di Sicilia, he may also entertain us with his fine singing voice. This year, we

NEW! Lying at the southwest corner of the European mainland, Portugal boasts 

a wide range of bird-rich habitats. From the extensive wetlands and ricefields 

of the Tagus valley and flocks of Greater Flamingos, through the steppe-like 

Alentejo grasslands with their Great and Little Bustards, Rollers and Bee-eaters, 

to the saltpans and pine forests of the southern Algarve, bringing the chance 

of Audouin’s Gull and Red-necked Nightjar. Less well known than Extremadura, 

just across the border in Spain, but with birding that’s every bit as good!

Extremadura & Gredos

The rolling grasslands of Extremadura host many ‘Spanish Steppe’ specialities: 

vultures and eagles, Great and Little Bustards, Great Spotted Cuckoo, Roller, 

Golden Oriole and Azure-winged Magpie, whilst the historic town of Trujillo is 

home to numerous nesting White Storks and Lesser Kestrels! Concluding with 

two nights in the lovely Sierra de Gredos adds alpine specialities, including 

a fascinating and localised form of Bluethroat. With lovely weather and two 

super hotels to look forward to, this is one of Limosa’s all-time favourite tours. 





FRANCE 

The Dordogne 



Spring comes early to the beautiful Dordogne region of southwest France, 

so this relaxed and all-round natural history tour is perfectly timed. Designed 

and led for us by David Simpson, author of the book Birding Dordogne, we 

explore the Dordogne and Vezérè valleys for birds, butterflies and orchids. 

Our spring 2012 and 2013 visits proved very popular and this year’s tour 

again includes an extra day, by popular demand! 





SPANISH PYRENEES 

High Aragon

Single-centre tour with John Muddeman 

With Lammergeiers, Wallcreepers and Lady’s Slipper Orchids, the Spanish 

Pyrenees make a superb destination for an all-round wildlife holiday! And 

High Aragon is surely one of the most exhilarating places we visit, with its 

snow-capped Pyrenean peaks and the towering rock pinnacles of Riglos. 

Other avian highlights regularly include Black Woodpecker, Rock Thrush and 

Citril Finch, but alpines and up to 20 species of orchid - including the exquisite 

Lady’s Slipper Orchid - add to the heady mix! 





FRANCE 

Dordogne for Butterflies

NEW! There are a host of summer butterflies in the beautiful Dordogne 

region of southwest France, and mid-June sees peak numbers and diversity 

of species. For lepidopterists, it makes for an enjoyable ‘stepping-stone’ 

between the UK’s butterflies and more exotic ones further south. Many are 

easily seen and include: Blue-spot, Sloe and Ilex Hairstreaks; High Brown, 

Heath and Marbled Fritillaries; Safflower and Red-underwing Skippers; 

and Adonis and Provençal Short-tailed Blues. 





FRANCE 

French Pyrenees in Summer

Single-centre tour with Robin Chittenden 

The beautiful French Pyrenees in summer: there can be few places better 

for seeing montane birds, butterflies and flowers. Our popular summer week 

centres on the glorious Gavarnie valley and gives us a chance of great views 

of Lammergeier, Griffon Vulture and Snowfinch, plus up to 70 butterfly species. 

At this time of year, the Pyrenean plants can be wonderful - as can the 

delicious French food! 





MADEIRA 

Freiras & Firecrests

Single-centre tour with João Jara 

NEW! Madeira rises sharply out of the Atlantic, its deep-water coastline 

being home to many species of seabird, including Roseate Tern, and Cory’s 

and Little Shearwaters, but also the threatened Freira-da-madeira or Zino’s 

Petrel. The island’s lush, tree-covered slopes host numerous interesting forms 

evolving in isolation, such as Madeiran Chaffinch and the endemic Madeiran 

Firecrest. Includes a boat trip to the Desertas Islands for a chance of Desertas 

Petrel as well as Europe’s rarest mammal, the Mediterranean Monk Seal.

FRANCE 

Summer in The Cévennes

NEW! The bird and butterfly rich landscape of The Cévennes, part of the 

Grandes Causses in southeastern France, is well worth exploring in summer. 

In a beautiful region made famous by the Knights Templar and its abandoned 

villages, the rolling limestone plateaux are characterised by whispering grasses, 

chestnut forests, deep gorges, and rocky granitic peaks including Mt. Lozère. 

Rock Thrush, Ortolan Bunting, Citril Finch, harriers, shrikes and vultures await 

- as do The Hermit, Furry and Turquoise Blues, Great Sooty Satyr, Esper’s 

Marbled White and a feast of fritillaries amongst a plethora of July butterflies. 





FRANCE 

Dordogne for Dragonflies

Single-centre tour with Dick Askew & David Simpson 

NEW! The picturesque Dordogne and Vezérè valleys are well known for the 

superb range of dragonflies to be found in the area, with around 60 species 

in the département. This new tour, led by dragonfly expert Dick Askew, could 

produce such delights as Orange-spotted Emerald, Western Spectre, Western 

Willow Spreadwing and the declining Pronged Clubtail. Along the way, we are 

also likely to encounter quite a few summer birds and butterflies on this easy 

paced holiday set amidst some of the loveliest French countryside. 





FRANCE 

Camargue & Pyrenees

Two-centre tour with Arnoud van den Berg 

Focusing on autumn migration through the south of France, this September 

tour starts in Provence exploring the wonderful wetlands of the Camargue, 

then moves to the grandeur of the High Pyrenees in search of migrants 

and alpine specialities such as Lammergeier, Wallcreeper, Alpine Accentor 

and Citril Finch. Delicious French cuisine at two good, family-owned hotels. 





SPAIN 

Autumn Migration in Andalucia

Two-centre tour with Stephen Daly 

An autumn week timed to coincide with one of Europe’s greatest bird 

spectacles - the mass migration of raptors and storks over the Strait 

of Gibraltar. Birds of prey and storks streaming southwards might include 

Egyptian and Griffon Vultures (with an outside chance of the very rare Rüppell’s 

Griffon!), Honey Buzzard, and Booted and Short-toed Eagles. Led by ‘our man 

in Andalucia’, Stephen Daly, and based at two good hotels - one near Tarifa, 

the other adjacent to the Coto Doñana National Park. 





Italy 

Western Sicily in Autumn

In September, migrants are streaming back south through the Mediterranean 

migration hotspot of Western Sicily as they make the return crossing between 

Europe and Africa. Join us for six nights at an excellent family-run hotel in the 

charming old town of Custonaci, plus one night on the offshore island of 

Favignana. Great birding, historic old towns, beautiful scenery and delicious 

Italian cuisine... what more could one ask? 





PORTUGAL 

The Algarve in Autumn

Two-centre tour with João Jara 

An autumn birdwatching tour to the Algarve, in southern Portugal. Visits 

to the key coastal sites, including Lagoa dos Salgados and Cape St Vincent, 

plus a pelagic boat trip for seabirds and a day trip to the Alentejo steppe. 

With birds of prey and other migrants on the move, highlights from our last 

tour included Storm Petrel, Balearic, Sooty, Great and Cory’s Shearwaters, 

Great and Little Bustards, Purple Swamphen, Spanish Imperial Eagle, 

Azure-winged Magpie, Bluethroat - and even Rose-coloured Starling!

CANARY ISLANDS 

Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is the easternmost island of the Canary Islands archipelago. 

This late autumn tour goes in search of the island’s unique endemic bird - 

Canary Islands Stonechat - as well as its desert specialities including Houbara 

Bustard, Cream-coloured Courser and Trumpeter Finch. In November, there are 

various wintering birds plus a very real chance of finding one or two autumnal 

trans-Atlantic strays! 






SPAIN 

Spanish Steppes in Autumn 

Wed 12-Wed 19 November (8 days) 


Escape the onset of the British winter and join this long-running tour for 

a week of terrific late autumn birding in wonderful Extremadura - the wild 

heart of Spain. Birds of prey in abundance, plus Great and Little Bustards 

on the steppe, thousands of wintering Common Cranes and so much more. 

Seven nights at a beautifully restored country manor house near Trujillo, 

with fine food and wine to look forward to each evening.

Eastern Europe 

Highlights of our 2014 schedule of tours to Northern 

and Eastern Europe include short breaks to Romania 

to see and photograph Brown Bears from hides in the 

mountains of Transylvania, and new trips to Hungary 

& Slovakia, Sweden in autumn and two winter breaks 

to Iceland entitled Orcas and Northern Lights. There are 

exciting revisions to our spring and autumn tours to 

Bulgaria, and a visit to Romania in search of Europe’s

This popular short break focuses on the rugged coasts and interior of the 

southwest, where we seek out Iceland’s winter birds. Specialities to watch

some of the newest and most dramatic landscapes in Europe, and with 

a chance to see the spectacular Northern Lights at night. 





ICELAND 

Orcas & Northern Lights

Single-centre tour with Andy Jones 

NEW! Few mammals express power and beauty as well as the Killer Whale, 

especially when seen against the backdrop of dramatic Icelandic cliffs! This 

new six-day tour to Iceland in winter spends some time searching for Orcas 

near Snæfellsnes, but also seeks out some of Iceland’s special winter birds, 

including Gyr Falcon, Harlequin Duck and Barrow’s Goldeneye. We also have 

a chance to see the spectacular Northern Lights at night or Humpback and 

Minke Whales during the day.

‘Old East Germany’ is, ornithologically speaking, a yet to be discovered area 

of northern Europe. This ground-breaking short tour is visits at a time when 

the numbers of Cranes, and Taiga and Tundra Bean and White-fronted Geese 

are at their maximum. Good chances of seeing Great Bustards, birds of prey - 

including White-tailed Eagle and Rough-legged Buzzard - and up to 5 species 

of woodpecker. Join us in Brandenburg, for the ‘Crane & Goose Concerto’! 





ROMANIA 

Brown Bears & Birds Weekend

NEW! An exclusive short break to see and photograph Brown Bears from 

specially designed hides and in small groups limited to just six, set amongst 

Romania’s beautiful Carpathian Mountains. We will be on the quest to find 

some exciting birds too, like Ferruginous Duck, Hazel Grouse, Ural Owl, 

Wallcreeper and potentially all ten of Europe’s woodpeckers including the 

splendid Three-toed and the scarce White-backed Woodpecker. 





SWEDEN

As we explore the wild forests and lakes of central Sweden we will search out 

Capercaillie, Hazel Grouse and Black Grouse, Three-toed Woodpecker and a 

wonderful selection of possible owls, including Great Grey, Ural, Eagle, Pygmy 

and Tengmalm’s. Common Cranes trumpet as they arrive back on their nesting 

grounds, so join us for a hugely enjoyable Scandinavian short break! Based in 

comfort at a warm and welcoming historic country guesthouse in the woods.

Hortobágy, Zemplén 

& Ore Mountains 


Cross-border tour with János Oláh 

NEW! A superb bi-country tour combining the spectacular birdlife of Eastern 

Hungary with a foray across the border into Slovakia’s Ore Mountains. We visit 

the famous steppe grasslands and lakes of the Hortobágy National Park, the 

Zemplén Forest Reserve and the Slovensk Raj National Park in search of Great 

Bustard, Little Crake, Saker, Eastern Imperial Eagle, Ural Owl - and a chance to 

see the complete set of ten European woodpeckers, including the rare Whitebacked 

and Three-toed.

Danube Delta & Black Sea

The immense Danube Delta is Europe’s greatest wetland - and the centrepiece 

of our classic spring tour to Romania is three nights spent aboard a floating 

hotel-boat exploring the heart of the delta, getting you ‘up close and personal’ 

to some of the continent’s rarest breeding birds. White Pelican, Great Blackheaded 

Gull and Paddyfield Warbler head an all-star cast on a trip that also 

goes in search of spring migrants along the Black Sea coast and specialities 

such as Levant Sparrowhawk and Pied Wheatear in the Macin Mountains. 





CZECH REPUBLIC 

Sumava Mountains & South Moravia

A delightful holiday exploring the beautiful Czech Republic in the company of 

Limosa’s engaging resident guide, Martin Hrouzek. After the unspoilt mountain 

forests and bird-rich wetlands of Bohemia, south of Prague, we travel east 

to the riverine woodlands of South Moravia, close to the borders with Austria

Northern India boasts four of the sub-continent’s top birding sites and one 

of the world’s most celebrated tourist attractions. Our Classic Northern India 

tour brings them all together, with the magic of Bharatpur, the magnificence 

of the Taj Mahal and a boat trip on the remarkable Chambal River. From there 

we journey north to explore the bird-rich Himalayan foothills at Corbett 

National Park before climbing higher up to the spectacular old hill-station 

of Nainital. 





North America 

Our tours ‘across the pond’ are mostly well established 

now, with a repertoire of tried and tested departures 

that we’ve fine-tuned over the years. Even so, we like 

to ring the changes when we can. For 2014, we are 

delighted to unveil a brand new Canadian offering: 

southern Alberta. Focusing on the unique birdlife of 

the prairie grasslands and Rocky Mountains, it’s a trip 

that will also take you to some ‘must-see’ places - such 

as Wildhorse, Writing on Stone and Head Smashed In 

Buffalo Jump! Cape May is an east coast destination 

that our groups have now visited more than a dozen 

times in autumn. But our May 2013 tour was the first 

to go there in spring. After the spectacular success of 

that trip, we had no hesitation including it again next

migrant warblers dripping from the Live Oaks, or wideeyed

INSURANCE It is a condition of booking that all participants must be fully covered by insurance before travelling with us. We strongly recommend that you obtain 

adequate travel insurance as soon as possible after booking to ensure you are covered against charges for unexpected cancellation, personal accident, medical 

expenses, personal liability, loss of luggage or money, etc. Once you have arranged your insurance, please be sure to send us the following essential details: 

name of your insurance provider, their contact telephone number, your policy number, expiry date and your insurer’s 24hr Emergency Assistance number. 

Due to UK Government legislation please note we can no longer offer or recommend travel insurance. Please confirm one of the following:
