Welcome to our 22nd Annual Angus Bull Sale. We have made a dedicated effort to add more value to our product by adding 

carcass, rib eye, and more thickness than ever before. It has made an immediate impact in our carcass value, without having to 

sacrifice the import traits vital to our resources. Along this journey we offer hope and sustainability, in creating new relationships 

and carrying on the Split Diamond tradition by continuing to raise maternally oriented, performance tested responsible Angus 

seed-stock. We have been selling bulls for over 29 years, and as we look over the horizon we see a market with the lowest 

cattle numbers in recent history, realizing it will take quality cattle to compete and feed this growing popultion. 

Sale features include full brothers from several sire groups and several elite donor females. 70% of these bulls will have a 

Birth Weight EPD less than the Angus Breed Average (+1.8), 90% will have a Weaning Weight EPD of more than the average 

(+46) and 91% will have a Yearling Weight EPD of more than the average (+84). Our bulls average Birth Weight EPD is a +1.2, 

and the average Weaning Weight EPD is +53 and average Yearling Weight EPD is +97 over the entire selections of bulls, which 

makes most of the sale offering suitable for heifers and still have the growth to put on cows. 

Our goal is to provide our customers with progressive genetics that are best suited for our environment. Our commitment to 

reaching these goals includes ongoing investment in top herd sires and choosing superior proven females to our program. 

Only our top females, using performance records and nursing ratios are placed in our A.I. program, along with our 

replacement heifers and two year old cows. We transfer almost 200 embryos into the balance of our registered cows. These 

recipient cows receive the embryos from the mating of our elite donor females and bred to industry leading sires. 

The bulls completed a 110 day performance test with a 3.0 lb. average daily gain to have a moderated growth rate, so 

that they can be turned out and work for you. They have been rigorously screened and tested to bring you bulls that we 

can be proud of. They have been semen tested, scrotal measured, and ultra sounded to provide carcass data. Also you will 

notice that many selected lots have been DNA tested with the Pfizer HD 50K in our 

ongoing efforts to be on the cutting edge of our genetics. These bulls have received 

a complete fall and spring vaccination program including 2 shots for foot rot. We 

don’t stop there, we also provide a first year breeding guarantee, and a sight unseen 

purchase guarantee for all those who choose to bid over the phone, or use Superior 

Livestock. We are still offering a VOLUME Discount 3-5 bulls purchased is a 5% 

discount, above 5 bulls is a 10% discount. As always, if you haul your bulls’ home sale

HERD HEALTH 

Split Diamond bulls are on a complete health program from birth 

until sale day. At birth they receive a Selenium supplement, Nasalgen 

and Vision 7, followed at branding by a Nasalgen booster, Covexin 8 

and Virashield 5. In the fall, prior to weaning, they receive Virashield 

5, Bar-Somnus 2P, Vision 7, wart vaccine and Ivermectin pour-on. 

A booster of wart vaccine is repeated in January. A regimen of two 

injections of Fusoguard for foot rot prevention is implemented over 

the 45 days prior to the sale, in addition to 8-Way (Red Water) and 

Vibro Lepto and Pour On. Complete fertility screening performed by 

Dr. Bob Heningson. Split Diamond bulls have had the BVD ELISA 

Test (Ear Notch) to identify PI Cattle. All tested negative. All 

bulls guaranteed to be AM-NH-CA free. 

PERFORMANCE DATA 

All bulls were performance tested. Complete, accurate 

performance and carcass EPDs, ultrasound data and projected 

sale day weight are provided on every bull selling.

Terms of the sale are cash, unless prior arrangements have been 

made with Steve Buckner. 

FIRST BREEDING SEASON INSURANCE 

All bulls will be covered 50% by Split Diamond Ranch if they are 

injured during their first breeding season. Breeding is defined as the 

90-day period following the first turnout of the bulls. 

50% of the value of the injured bull, minus one-half salvage value, 

will be given as credit in a future sale or toward a replacement 

bull if one is available. Salvage value, if any, will be split equally 

between Split Diamond Ranch and the buyer. All injured bulls must 

be diagnosed by a veterinarian. Please notify us as soon as possible 

should injury occur and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. 

All claims must be made by September 1, 2013.

Understanding EPDs 

Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to 

perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure 

for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be 

incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will 

be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, 

depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.

Production & Maternal EPDs 

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed 

as a difference in percentage of unassisted 

births, with a higher value indicating greater 

calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts 

the average difference in ease with which 

an sire’s calves will be born when he is bred 

to first-calf heifers. 

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in 

pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability 

to transmit birth weight to his progeny 

compared to that of other sires. 

Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed 

in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability 

to transmit weaning growth to his progeny 


Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed 

in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability 

to transmit yearling growth to his progeny 


Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor 

of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and 

mothering ability as expressed in his 

daughters compared to daughters of other 

sires. In other words, it is that part of a 

calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and 

mothering ability. 

$Values 

$Values are multi-trait selection indexes expressed in 

dollars per head, to assist commercial beef producers 

by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. A 

$Value has meaning only when used in comparison to 

the $Value of another animal. For example, just as with 

EPDs, variation in $Values between animals indicates 

average expected differences in the relative value of 

progeny if random mating is assumed and the calves 

are exposed to the same environment. 

Weaned Calf Value ($W): an index expressed in 

dollars per head, is the expected average difference in 

future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W 

includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated 

with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, 

maternal milk, and mature cow size. 

Feedlot Value ($F):an index expressed in dollars 

per head, is the expected average difference in future 

progeny performance for postweaning performance 

compared to progeny of other sires. 

Grid Value ($G):an index expressed in dollars per 

head, is the expected average difference in future 

progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared 

to progeny of other sires. 

Beef Value ($B):an index expressed in dollars per 

head, is the expected average difference in future 

progeny performance for postweaning and carcass 

value compared to progeny of other sires. The $B 

value combines the contributions of $F and $G. 

Carcass EPDs 

Carcass Weight EPD (CW), is a predictor of 

transmitting ability for hot carcass weight. 

Marbling fat EPD (Marb), is a predictor of the 

difference in a sire’s progeny for percent intramuscular 

fat in the ribeye muscle compared to other sires. 

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), is a predictor of the difference 

in square inches of ultrasound ribeye area of a sire’s 

progeny compared to the progeny of other sires. 

Fat Thickness EPD (FAT), expressed in inches, is a 

predictor of the difference in ultrasound fat thickness 

at the 12th rib of a sire’s progeny compared to the 

progeny of other sires. It includes the weighted average 

of 60% of the rib fat measurement and 40% of the rump 

fat measurement.

Most of us have read how DNA has changed the game in Livestock Evaluation. Most of us have tried to read 

the scientific explanations on how it works. Simply put, cattle that excelled in specific traits were tested, and 

DNA identified the genes (or markers) that superior animals had in common. 

For example, let’s look at Weaning Weight (WW). Many thousands of animals with actual weaning weights 

recorded were evaluated with DNA. Some with very high weaning weights had the same gene markers in 

common, while some with poor weaning weights possessed an altogether different set of gene markers. 

We can now DNA test to investigate whether an animal outside the discovery group possess these favorable 

markers proven for superior weaning weight. The DNA possessed by a sire is directly correlated to his ability 

to transmit desirable traits to his offspring. 

EPDs are good, DNA makes them better. 

DNA - Decoded! 

EPDs work. They are the best information in the industry, but are inherently dynamic with something called 

“possible change”, which says that EPDs can change significantly once progeny arrive. No fault of the system, 

because a pedigree prediction cannot describe which genes an animal actually got from its parents, as there 

are billions of possible combinations. The American Angus Association owns the most complete database in 

the industry, comprising millions of animal records. When DNA for these favorable (or unfavorable) markers 

is applied to the calculation of EPDs for each trait, they become much more accurate. In fact, Pfizer HD 50K 

can make EPDs up to 6 times more accurate and predictable than a pedigree prediction alone. 

Another way to look at it is with Progeny Equivalents. They describe how many progeny a bull would have to 

sire in order for his EPDs to reflect a comparable amount of accuracy: 

Birth – BW EPD with 50K has the same accuracy as 11 progeny birth weights turned in on your bull. 

Weaning – WW EPD with 50K has the same accuracy as 19 progeny weaning weights on your bull. 

Yearling – YW EPD with 50K has the same accuracy as 22 progeny yearling weights on your bull. 

Milk – M EPD with 50K has the same accuracy as having 15 daughters in production out of your bull. 

Carcass – CW EPD with 50K has the same accuracy as 6 progeny carcasses weighed from your bull. 

Rib Eye – RE EPD with 50K has the same accuracy as 9 progeny carcasses measured for Rib Eye. 

Marbling – MB EPD with 50K has the same accuracy as having 16 progeny carcasses graded. 

Ultrasound – Carcass EPDs with 50K have the same accuracy as up to 30 progeny scanned. 

Do not accept substitutes! 

The Pfizer 50K DNA test analyzes over 50,000 different markers spread across the entire bovine genome 

for the most comprehensive analysis, unlike cheaper DNA tests that only look at 400 gene markers, and are 

obviously less accurate. 

Today we can reliably put bulls together for uniformity as well or better with Genomic-Enhanced (GE) EPDs 

than we can with half-brothers or even full brothers with non GE EPDs.

Residual Feed Intake Information 

Split Diamond Ranch is always looking to the future to bring their 

customers and their own program profit based genetics. The Buckner’s 

have incorporated SAV Homesteader 7282 as a benchmark sire into the 

herd, a big reason we feel confident that he is such an important part in 

our genetics is because he is a perfect 8-star bull on the Gene Star DNA 

system for Feed Efficiency. Split Diamond Ranch decided it was important 

to progeny test a sample of his sons in the Midland Bull Test Grow Safe 

system to gather data on Residual Feed Intake (RFI) or net feed efficiency 

to see if these genetics were indeed feed efficient. Five Homesteader 

sons were entered in the Test and posted a combined RFI of -3.06 with 

a combined ratio of 113 and combined an ADG ratio of 103. Individually 

those sons posted -7.97 ratio 136 #2, -7.0 ratio 133 #3, -3.12 ratio 114, 

0, +2.0 over the entire first RFI group of 300+ bulls. One of those sons 

was left to sell in the April 8th 2011 sale, and sold to Troy Wheeler of Helena 

MT for $5,000. He posted the #3 RFI of -7.0. The other four bulls returned 

to be sold in the Split Diamond Ranch sale on March 2nd 2011 where they 

averaged $5,500. Improving the feed efficiency of a beef cattle herd can 

mean big savings to a producer. One way to achieve this goal is to select 

bulls that have been proven to be feed efficient, since 80 to 90 percent of 

the genetic improvements comes through the sires. We are committed the 

exploration of feed efficient bulls and are looking to 

the future of DNA to start the next process to find 

these efficient genetics and put them to the real 

world test at Midland Test Station.
