Welcome to the Red Top
Angus dispersal sale - it’s
with mixed emotions that I
have decided to disperse but
time and change have
teamed up to pursuade me
that it’s what I need to do.
The one thing I can say is
that I am really proud of this
herd of cattle and what
they’ve done for me - I am
confident that they will continue
to do a lot of good for a
lot of people across the country
and welcome you to stop
by anytime before the sale to
appriase them for yourselves.
In 1979 I went to Griffis’
Summer Female Sale and
happened to ride over with
Jim Wallace of Spear Head
Angus and Jim Good of Red
Line Angus. This was the first
time I met Jim Good (he was delivering a red bull in the east
country). On the way home after the sale Jim Good found out I
clipped cattle so in the spring he called and wanted some bulls
clipped and I said, “Sure”. The bulls I was going to clip were at
Grant Moore’s feedlot and I think I did 150 bulls at the time for
the 3 sales they had - one in High River, one in Kamloops and
one in Camrose.
I continued on buying a few black cattle but soon I saw how
good the Red Angus were selling and changed the color of cattle I
was buying. Then in 1981 Jim Good took me down to Boot Jack
at Moccasin, Montana. After going through 400+ females and
calves, I selected twelve cows and purchased them. Some of
those females’ offspring are still in the herd and will be in this sale.
– A Bit ABOut Red Top Angus HiStORy –
The next step I took was in 1983 when I purchased three
head of yearling heifers out of the Red Line “Sellabration” - Red
FFC 167A (the Septima female family) for $8250, Red Line Copper
Lady 28P at $5400 and Red Line Kuruba 50P at $7500. A full
sister to 167A sold that day to Jake White for $6000.
Prior to 1983 I somehow became the President of the “Red
Angus Club of Alberta” (those were great meetings in Olds!!) and
that was the start of the first Red Angus show in Canada - it was
held at Lloydminster. We had a show as well as a heifer calf sale
where I purchased the Lakima 1S female from Towaw and that
lineage is still in the herd.
The next big leap I took was in 1984 when I purchased
twelve females for a total cost of $54,000 - but prior to this I had
also purchased five head from Jim privately and in the private
purchase was Red Line Goldie 7P which everyone knows about.
RT 40U, whose dam was Red Line Goldie 40K and 40U produced
Red Knight... but Red Line Goldie 7P was out of a sister to
40K and by Red Dynamo 614 and this is where the Red Top
Goldie 1B family comes from which you will see some embryos
out of.
It has been a great pleasure to have been part of the Red
Angus industry working on the Canadian Red Angus Promotion
Society, Red Round-up and the Red Angus Club of Alberta. We,
as a Red Angus group, have accomplished great things in these
years and I am looking foward to seeing you on October 21,
2012, at the Mega Dome in Olds, Alberta! I also invite you to
come to the Mega Dome the night before to inspect the cattle
and enjoy some hospitality. If you have any questions between
now and sale time, please do not hesitate to contact myself or
any of the sale staff
Thank you everyone for the good times, good sales and the
good friendships built along the way - it’s been a good ride!
See you on the 21st...
– A FEW WORDS FROM Mackenzie Sales Management –
Welcome to the Red Top “Complete & Total” Dispersal sale ... right down to the semen tank and the
show equipment! Rod’s really cleanin’ house so he’s selling the broom, too!!
I can hardly believe my “little buddy”, Rod Lorenz, is going through with it! We started talking about
a dispersal sale two years ago and now it’s upon us. Several people have asked me, “Why did you put
Rod’s sale on the heels of the mighty Red Round-up event?” The Mackenzie Sales Management answer
to that is very simple - if there ever was one person to deserve to have his dispersal on the Red
Round-up weekend it would have to be Rod Lorenz. He has devoted his entire life to this breed - not
only by showing cattle all over this country and promoting them unselfishly for the betterment of its existence,
he’s also sat on countless boards and committees including the Promotion Society (I think Rod
was the president of the Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society for about 100 years!). I truly respect,
admire and cherish the time Rod gave to this breed and the job he did when he was in charge. We owe
him a tremendous amount of gratitude for putting Red Angus where it is today due to his service.
Thank You, Rod!!
Not very often do I let the consignor write their own footnotes but Rod wanted to say things about
his cows in his own way and I believe it shines through brightly just how much Rod loves his cows when
you read his own words in this book.
If you are looking for a herdbull, look at Lot #1. I am not sure there has been a better yearling offered
ever before, especially when you see how he summered after being exposed to all 70 head in this
sale. He’s a stud!!
Lastly, the heifer calves... what a set of 2012 born, absolutely stunning beauties! Come and get
one or a truck load of a piece of Red Top History.
If you have any questions prior to the sale, please don’t hesitate to contact myself or any of our
staff, we’ll be happy to hear from you.
See you October 21st -
