Condition assessment and characterization of
materials and structures by means of
nondestructive testing (NDT) methods is a
priority need around the world to meet the
challenges associated with the durability,
maintenance, rehabilitation, retrofitting, renewal
and health monitoring of new and existing
infrastructures including historic monuments.
Numerous NDT methods that make use of
certain components of the electromagnetic and
acoustic spectrum are currently in use to this
effect with various levels of success and there is
an intensive worldwide research effort aimed at
improving Reinforcements the existing are an methods integral part and of developing all
composites and the quality and performance of
the composite can be optimized by modeling the
type and structure of the reinforcement before
molding. Composite reinforcements for optimum
performance reviews the materials, properties
and modeling techniques used in composite
production and highlights their uses in optimizing
performance.
Part one covers materials for reinforcements in
composites, including chapters on fibers, carbon
nanotubes and ceramics as reinforcement
materials. In part two, different types of
_ 1 1 structures Polymer matrix for reinforcements composites are are increasingly discussed, with
replacing traditional materials, such as metals,
for applications in the aerospace, automotive
and marine industries. Because of the relatively
recent development of these composites, there
is extensive on-going research to improve the
understanding and modelling of their behavior –
particularly their failure processes. As a
consequence there is a strong demand among
design engineers for the latest information on
this behavior in order to fully exploit the potential
of these materials for a wide range of weightsensitive
applications.
This book explores the main types of composite
