Clarkson E.S.; M. Thorp who will expand his teaching experience to Farley Mowat P.S.; Mrs. Heard
who will be an Instructional Coach at the OCDSB; Mrs. Belair-Leslie who has been relocated due to
lower enrolment; Mrs. Baker as she moves to Glen Ogilvie and to our teachers who will be on
maternity leave, Mme Heidi, Mme Kelly, Mme Shanna. We wish you well with your new families.
Mrs. Dowdall continues her leave until January 2012.
• A heartfelt goodbye to Mme Gratton who, as everyone knows, is the happiest teacher in the world!
Mme Gratton starts another chapter in her life journey – retirement! We wish you the very best and
know that you will visit us often.
• Thank you to our Long Term Occasional (LTO) teachers, Mrs. Wallace, Mrs. Bowker, Mr. Detto,
Mme Mac, Mme MacLean who have been wonderful alternates for our regular teachers.
• We welcome Mrs. Bickmore to the CVES staff who is coming “home” from Longfields Davidson
S.S.; Mme Makuch who hails from Lakeview PS; Mme MacMullin; Mrs. Kemp our new Intermediate
Music teacher and Mrs. Beach an Educational Assistant allocated to us part-time. Bienvenue!
• Castor Valley also welcomes our new and returning LTO’s, Mme Bernfeld, Mme Grew, Mr. Detto,
and Mme MacLean.
School Improvement Plans (SIP):
• We have decided to focus on Number Sense and Numeration, a Numeracy strand. More
specifically, the curriculum expectation of decomposing and composing numbers. We used EQAO
data, classroom assessment data and feedback from Osgoode Township High School to direct our
focus of targeted intervention. All teachers took part in a half-day SIP session, reviewing this past
year's Literacy goal, the new OCDSB Improvement Plan and planned for the SIP 2011. We are
thankful for the parent involvement at each of the 4 SIP sessions and for our incoming Principal's
participation in one of the SIP sessions. Excellent example of parent engagement at CVES.
Jamaica School Supplies Project:
• Former CVES custodian Easton Flemmings returned to CVES to attend Fun Night and to deliver the
many cards of thanks from the Jamaican children and school. I read in one of the cards - "God bless
1
you Mr. Flemmings. When I grow up I want to be just like you." Easton also provided a DVD for us
to show our students and families. We will be showing the DVD to our students during the end of
the year assembly.
Message of Thanks from Marnie:
• This is Marnie’s first Principalship and she is sad to leave CVES. This school holds a special place
in her heart (her own children are at CVES). She will never forget the special group of children, and
working with parents for all the children. Parents have been an easy group to get along with, open
to new ideas and suggestions, dedications, generosity, support – “No group like you”. Marnie
believes deeply in School Improvement Plan - parents are a very important voice in this process.
Wishes parents the very best and encourages parents to continue to be involved in their children’s
education.
• Marnie shared a lovely poem about volunteers.
b) Teaching Staff report:
cards, and of course looking after the students’ needs when injured, ill …. It’s a busy spot!! ☺
• Red and White Day, Thursday, June 30 th
• Our registration for September is 644 to date with more moving over the summer months
• Please be aware that the OSTA (transportation) site will be available after mid-August to check for
your child’s STOP. Any concerns or changes can be directed to them before school starts
• Laurie and Gail return to work Monday, August 29 th . Leslie will be relocated to another site as our
enrolment has decreased
• The common supply list has been sent to Heather to be put on Council’s website. I will attach it to
the final newsletter that will be posted tomorrow, therefore, families that receive a hard copy of the
newsletter will get theirs
• I have spoken with Heather re the Student Verification form that is sent home with the other many
forms in September. To save paper I would prefer not to send that particular form for completion
but just have parents call the school with updates to contact numbers etc. as most do now. The
council email address permission is in effect unless verbally cancelled. New parents would be given
that part to complete. If you have input, please contact us
• JK and SK information letters with start dates will be mailed after June end
• ENJOY YOUR SUMMER AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE, UNDERSTANDING AND
LAUGHTER … some more than others (Lauriel ☺) YOU ARE A WONDERFUL GROUP
• Planned renovations include cleaning of rafters, ductwork, repair to lighting, washing of the flags
and replacement of carpeting. The existing bookcases will be slightly rearranged to allow for better
usage and lighting. There will also be a new Circulation desk, more centrally located to allow for
better visibility, traffic circulation and safety of students (no more standing behind doors or in
entrance way while signing out books).
• Renovations are schedule to be completed by mid-August and once I am back to work 30 August,
• A Bi-lingual Scholastic Book fair has been scheduled for the second week of September, to coinside
with “Meet the Teacher Night”. A French-only one is schedule for just prior to the March
Break 2012. During this school year, thanks to the wonderful support of Parents and our Students,
we were able to purchase over $4000.00 worth of new books for our Library as well add to
teachers’ classroom collections. 75% of these were in French. We will also be receiving a special
donation of two - 5 foot long glass display cases from the Hobby Centre on Royden Dr. These will
remain in the Library and will provide the opportunity to set up special displays for the enrichment
of our students learning experience. More information on special displays will be provide as the
year progresses. Thanks to Doug Clunie (and Marg) who have agreed to pick up the cases and
deliver them to CVES.
• Thank you very much for the hard work by our Parent Volunteers and wonderful support for the
Library. Without all your help and support, I would not have been able to accomplish as much as I
have done in the process towards revitalizing and refreshing our Library collection. I believe that
our School Libraries are a vital part of the Education Environment, providing support and resources
to our teachers while enriching our students’ learning experience. Thank you for supporting me as
well as your School Library.
MILK PROGRAM
Milk could be colder.
Nothing against it - our children get milk regularly at home.
think about eliminating chocolate milk -way too much sugar for the younger kids
I love this program!
Respondent
Dont like that kids must bring home the empty (leaking) boxes in their backpacks. Unsanitary and a big health hazard. This must be
change or I will reconsider continuing with the program as it causes mold buildup in the backpacks!
Will participate next year.
my daughter does not drink milk
My Son did not like the taste of the milk in the carton. He prefers the one in the bottle or jug.
I participate here and there over the year. It is less expensive for me to pack milk myself, so I stopped. I didn't realize it was part of a school fund raiser.
we don't drink cow's milk
My son can't take too much milk according to his doctor
Milk could be colder.
I found it pricey. Cheaper for me to send it with my children.
I would have participated, however my daughter was not interested in the program.
I'm told the milk isn't cold enough??
FOOD PROGRAM
Answer
Would like it offered more often. Helpful program for the busy life of a family.
Respondent
My child mentioned a few times that her food arrived cold (chicken fingers). I am not sure I would repeat this program but the Subway subs seemed to be ok.
think about replacing pizza and chicken nuggets with a healthier option such as pasta, omelets or even smoothies (booster juice)
This program is awesome; my child looks forwards to the lunch days!
Survey does not allow selecting both first and third options in this question.
Will participate next year.
Would be SO GREAT to have more days!!!
Yes, I will support next year - I was unable to click more than one box above.
daughter in grade 8 and leaving CVES after this year
Reminders the week of would be great!
I will support again. I could not select that above.
Yes, I will support this program again next year
yes we participated and will do so again
Pizza day and nugget day are the family favourites
can't check more than 1 box, but yes i will support this program again next year
15
was not impressed with the baked potato day... son had to have his lunch supplemented was always coming home saying he was hungry after that meal
Only able to select the first answer but also want to say I will support this program.
Great!
I would be willing to participate more, ie in a once per week hot lunch program (everyone hates making lunches!)
Yes, I will support again. Enjoyed the potatoes but very large and were expensive.
Great program, would like to increase the number of days.
I would like to see LunchLady Hot lunch programme in addition
Will participate in this program again next year, but would prefer different options (healthier) to choose from.
kids love the special lunches. Will definitely participate again next year.
Yes, I would support this program.
Would again
ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS
Answer
Respondent
Happy to buy one book (and I have had my money's worth from it) but not willing to let my children approach friends, family and neighbours with $35 books.
Don't think I would support this every year.
expensive and we don't use the book b/c we don't live in the city
not enough in the book that warrants that price... we can not afford to go to those places
My son loves it.
I bought a book for myself, but found it too expensive to offer to family/friends, so I did not.
I felt that we were trying to sell too many things in close proximity. I bought one book for the family, and I know that it is a big money-maker, but I dislike always
trying to sell things.
the coupons were kinda useless
Great idea.....a nice Christmas gift if people know early enough.
don't get out enough to benefit!
Not sure yet if I will participate again.
MAC MILLAN'S SALE
Answer
How about a spring version with BBQ items.
Respondent
Didn't support this one this year as I felt I should support the same fundraiser at my son's nursery school. Like the Macmillans products though and would
support it in the future.
Keep this one for sure! It also just in time for Christmas!
these products are just OK -not great
can not afford this item
It is hard for us to pick it up.
Good idea.
Grandma bakes
16
This supplier is really expensive for what you receive.
Will perhaps participate next year depending on my need for frozen food at that time.
prefer to home bake
QSP MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION FUNDRAISER
Answer
Did not participate as other schools did this fundraiser early than Castor Valley and I purchased magazine from them.
I am still waiting for a delivery to Calgary.
Dont read magasine so it would be a waste of paper.
may or may not participate next year.
don't need more magazines
cannot afford this luxury
My son loves his magazine
Was not something that interested me.
Love them as presents
Will likely purchase magazine subscriptions as Christmas gifts.
might, didn't have the magazine I wanted and had already subscribed to other
SAMKO TOY SALE
Answer
Money for nothing surely, especially if parents are shopping anyway.
kids have way too many toys
I don't shop at this toy sale. My children are too old for the sale
Don't recall hearing about it.
If I was going anyway, I would have done so, but would not make a special trip.
No hassle..went anyway.
Just not convenient for us - but great for others!
missed this one
SENS TICKETS
Answer
Would support it if buying tickets.
We don't go to the games.
Sorry, we're not a "hockey" family.
It just depends on how busy life is!
Have own tickets
Did not know about this one
Great interactive idea.......wasn't aware of the dates in enough time to work it in.
We don't go to hockey games... at least not yet :)
another I didn't hear about
Answer
Kids really like this one!
LOVE this event and so do my children!
Respondent
Although we did not participate in this initiative, because my child is in grade 8, we participated every other year. My child enjoyed it as we. Keep this one
going.
love, love, love this
Love this event!
Love this day!!
I think that the bar should be set higher as to what gifts are appropriate. My child brought home two used items which were missing pieces and the other fell
apart after a few uses.
I love this event!
Kids love this day!
Fantastic idea!
Like this very much. Gifts seem to be increasing significantly in value over the years...
but make sure the gifts are NICE
Christmas shopping day is a highlight of the school year. Our children start looking forward to it in September and talk about it all year long. Our son in grade 5
was thrilled that he was included in this day this year. Thank you!
Great opportunity for the kids they had a great time!!
This was an awesome event. The kids LOVED it and so did we to see their reactions and pride.
Sorry, completely missed it this year. I have participated in the past (earlier grades).
The kids love this event and are so proud of their gifts under the tree.
LOVE IT.
I beleive that this could be increased to $5
This is a great activity; my daughter loves doing this.
TALENTFEST
This is more of a service than a fund raiser...as the profits have gone to the intermediate's Christmas Craft. A definite keeper!!!
Answer
Respondent
I thought Talentfest was great and appreciated the work involved in pulling it together. The finale was spectacular and memorable. My only negative would be
that it was far too long. I understand it was long in order to include as many kids and not disappoint any of the willing performers...however...just too long! And it'll
probably be even more popular next yr. You might have to be ruthless about who performs or limit to a smaller year group range. Kudos to Karen Warren for a
great job.
Fewer talents next year please - it was very long, especially for young children.
Felt the night was way too long. Neither of my children were performing, but went to support friends of my children.
Amazing!
Our children's winter sports are winding down and thus unable to participat due to playoffs.
busy that night
if my child chooses to participate then I would gladly attend
18
It was a bit too long for the younger children. I think a solution would be to not have a detaied intro for each group. Maybe you should make it on a smaller
scale????
USED BOOK SALE
perhaps shortening the event in the future would be a good idea - three hours was a bit long for a school/work night
Wonderful but long
Please feel free to charge admission
We did not attend because it was too late for our young daughter, but will in the future.
Again, a CVES community builder.....it's good to have events that celebrate our families....at home and at school.
too long an evening. Better to divide into 2 shows ... lots of work for staff I know but 3 hours was too much for the kids and parents who needed to go to work the
next day
Answer
Respondent
Love this! Great way to encourage literacy. Don't know how many parents it attracted??? I went and got a ton of great quality books at a great price......including
French ones. My kids also love this.
Just missed the deadline this year.
did not participate this time but have participated in the past
i sent books in and my child bought books - i do save books for this event
I think this fundraiser should go back to Friday and Saturday morning at least. I wasn't able to attend Friday but went on Saturday with another person only to find
it was only Friday.
Was not able to participate
FUN NIGHT
I did not attend myself, but my kids purchased books. I wonder about families that do not have the financial means when the children are being asked to bring
money on a regular bases - used book sale, scholastic book sale, jump rope for heart, money for japan relief, for free the children activities, for the canteen on
sports days, etc....
To increase the sales outside of the kids, I wonder about doing this in coordination with another event - ie parent-teacher night, fun night, etc.
Not this year.
Another great event!
Not sure if it is worth having in the evening?
Maybe coincide it with another day parents are in the school??
Answer
Respondent
Just received the flyer for this years and appreciate the wider range of food being offered this year in the canteen. Good healthier choices too. The kids seem to
love this, although I find the tickets and the lining up at the end for cheap prizes a bit of a pain. Really love the gift basket idea....glad it's being repeated.
I love this idea!
this is my son's first year so I have not participated in the past but may this year
Love it.
It is becoming hard to encourage older students to be involved.....most of the games are geared to the younger kids.
MABEL'S LABELS
Answer
Respondent
Just wondering.....is this fundraiser published at the induction evening for kindergarten parents??? Perhaps it is....if not it should be....target new parents who are
getting school stuff ready for September. Perhaps even a little flier in their induction package.
My children are too old for this.
if i need labels...not guaranteed
I write with permanent marker
not sure if I need more labels
SCHOOL SUPPLY KITS
Answer
Respondent
I did support this the first year it was done at CV....and it was an easy option for busy parents. Just didn't do it this year as I have a daughter who loves to shop
and gets great pleasure in checking things off her list and choosing what colour her pencils etc will be.
I did it the first year and found the products not the best quality.
I participated the first year but found the costs the second year to be too high.
The kits have become more expensive, therefore making a trip to Staples more worthwhile.
Pretty expensive for what you get.
Unsure. Have used it in the past, but find it expensive.
undecided to participate again
more expensive than buying on my own
I participated in the first year but didn't last year as I fpound it more expensive last year. I shopped for cheaper last year
missed deadline for this school year... would be interested for this coming year ( sept) tho we do not have a credit card.
Policies are changing and I do not think that parents can be expected to contribute the number of supplies that they have been in the past. Many of these
supplies were neve even used.
Not sure yet.
I found the supplies expensive.
Did last year and still had things left over. Too much. Had to pick up a few specifics but didn't want all the extras.
I participated one year prior, still had leftovers this year. No need to have a bag in this kit. Most likely will participate every other year
rip-off...they buy cheap stuff!
Too expensive
Would rather do this myself
didn't seem like a very good deal and I often have supplies left over from previous year so don't need everything on the list.
Kids enjoy the school shopping experience; tried it the first year but kids complained that the quality wasn't great - not sure if it improved this past year.
MEET THE TEACHER NIGHT
Answer
Respondent
20
This was appreciated...it's good to meet the teachers early in the school year, rather than waiting for the first parents night. Especially important in a school like
CV where children are bussed in and parent contact can be more limited.
this is a very important event
Will participate next year.
Like meeting teachers. Didn't purchase food.
From a meet the teacher night perspective, I find this event a waste of time. No time to actually meet the teacher or have a valuable dialogue
We usually participate, however this year we were unable to attend.
I like this start of the year opportunity
Great chance to socialize but hard to actually meet the teachers.
I will be participating next year - 1st time I have anyone in grade 1!
I find that there are usually a handful of parents that take all the "teacher time" and we never actually get the meet the teacher anyway.
MONETARY DONATION
Answer
Respondent
I like the idea of picking and choosing which fundraiser we wish to support. It does become quite challenging at times trying to ask people for $ especially when
you have more than one child at that school.
This is a NO for me - there is more to fundraisng events, rather than profit. Fundraisers help contribute to the whole ethos of the school, bring parents into the
building & are fun! Donations are always nice & I appreciate that they are a convenient option but I'd hate to see them taking over from the fundraising totally as
the benefits & fun from our events would be missed. Fundraising gives us a sense of the fact that it is "our" school/"our" community & we're working for a
common goal.
Not sure about this, I like the fundraising initiatives.
leaving this ater this year
If you decide to do this type fundraising, please stagger the donation - ie: October and February
I just fpoiund that this past year was money, money, money. I know it was an exeptional year for fundraising (2 play structures). But the requests for money was
none stop right from the first day of school. I felt overwhelmed for the first 4 months of school.
no money to spend on fundraisers.. hard enough to get money put aside meals and milk program are about it
n/a
Sorry, don't recall this fundraiser.
Parents should absolutely not be asked to contribue money. Not every family at this school is wealthy and I think this is a huge misconception.
I will support fundraising or I would do a monetary donation if the committee preferred to go this route.
I would agree to this plan.
I feel there is enough fundraising events that I will not be giving extra monies above and beyond what is already asked of us.
We donated money to the school instead of participating in the "product" fundraisers, and will likely do this in the future. We try to keep our consumerism to a
minimum, and so many of the "buy something" fundraisers do not work for us. We also find that many of these fundraisers work on "peer pressure" for our child
to participate - we object to that but do recognize that fundraising is important - thus the monetary donation.
21
May want to check board policy..pretty sure this is NOT acceptable!
I donate a lot of my *time* :)
if there is a specific aim for the donation and not a general fund.
What types of fundraisers or events would you like to see at Castor Valley in the future? All new ideas are welcome! - Responses
Answer
Respondent
I would love to see an art card fundraiser. Not sure which company it is but every year we get christmas cards from friends in the UK & they have been printed
with their child's drawing on the front. They're done quickly & easily in class, sent off to be printed, & parents buy a whole pack of their cards that have been
designed by their child.
I have no suggestion. I think CVES covers lots of activity throughout the year.
art show where the children sell large paintings -maybe even try an auction
I would like to see a group organization for the Ottawa Race Weekend. It would support the ciriculum of fitness within the school community. The Greely school
did it this year.
support for school supplies in particular schools in third-world countries
Dances
Halloween Dance for all ages on a Friday Night.
Popcorn, kids receive an order form on friday/Monday return with money by Wednesday and get their personal size bags on Friday afternoon.
It would be great to have something leading up to the Christmas Holidays... perhaps a mini-talent show with a winter-theme.
n/a
I would like to see a better communicated fundraising plan and articulate what the goals are. There is WAY TOO MUCH PRESSURE on the kids for this
fundraising. My kids were so worried about this all the time, and as a busy parent, I don't have the time to track everything!
I have offered to do a Tupperware fundraiser where your school will get 40% from flyer sales and 10% from catalogue sales, but was told it would be too much
paper work. I offered to do it for them and no luck. This would bring in a ton of extra cash for the school Maybe you should consider this for next year???
Chocolate bar sales and/or popcorn.
I think that the council should take into consideration families with multiple children. Perhaps one form could be sent per family rather then per child.
CVES clothing, hats, water bottles and knap sacks
raffle of a large item (ie a trip or something like this)
I think you are at your limit for fund raising events. If any more events are added, I feel it is really going to turn people off.
My daughter is finishing grade 8 and will not return next year.
Winter activity day
Plant sale
family garage sale
Bake sales, auctions - silent or live
This is our last year at Castor Valley and wish Council mcuh luck in all your future fundraisers.
22
- selling citrus fruit
- children's concert
Bulb or seed order
WEEKLY hot lunch programme....(Lunch Lady)
Plant bulbs;
Dances for kids.
crates of oranges
What initiatives would you like CVES school council to support next year? - Responses
Answer
Respondent
During Education wk, more activities-some public speakers for the kids by educating them on, respect, bullying, cultural and religious differences, treating
everyone the same, Education about food allergies(epipens-symptoms-keeping their friends safe), ensuring everyone's treated equally.
- not always the same kids in the portables-taking turns
Keep the same ones they have for sure!
A new sound system for the gym
music system for Gym
I think it would be nice if the council could donate some funds to the Grade 8 graduation. I found it quite dissappinting that after 10 years of my child being at this
school no money was put towards the graduation or the end of the yesr trip for the grade 8. Our children , I have 4 will never play on the structure that we have
contributed towards
Team building initiatives, motivational speaker, playground enhancement, music program and arts program
It was our first year at Castor Valley. I was very impressed with what the school council does already. :)Thanks for all your hard work!
art programs - I think that some of the opportunities that were offered to the kids interested in art were great. I think that the free the children program is great and
builds on the character program that you have at the school.
Field trip for all grades at year end
I was happy to hear about the support for Japan this year. Any ad-hoc support for community/global events is appreciated.
New sound system.
Focus on education for boys. Preferably split classes based on gender.
Terry fox, jump rope or heart
lights for stage productions/christmas show
Supplying our sports teams with black shorts so that they look like a team. It's an amazing moral booster.
More enjoyable field trips. Kids are quite tired of museums and would appreciate other (perhaps further than the city limits) places to visit.
enhance music and sports equipment
