ORQUÍDEA
AUGUST 2009
Phragmipedium caudatum (Lindl.) Rolfe 1896
If we measure the full
size of the flower
including its long
cauda, P. caudatum is
with no doubt the
biggest flower of all
orchids, sometimes
reaching over a meter
long.
But the rest of the
flower is also pretty big
and if it wasn’t
enough, this attractive
species presents
varieties that make it
even more interesting
because it presents a
wide range of shades
and tones.
It is a species
commonly used for
hybridization.
Although it was also
registered, as is the
case of P. bessae, in
the Appendix I of the
CITES Agreement for
the protection of
natural species, is very
common in our
country.
