or working out.
oVAL sPORt & FItnEss GuIDE | FALL 2011 13

The Power of sport
Give your Child the Best Chance to succeed
While I was growing up I loved to play
outdoors with my sisters. We couldn' t get
enough. We would stay outside playing
road hockey or riding our bikes until the only light
left was the moon and the street lamps. It probably
drove my mom nuts having to come outside 15 or
20 times and yell at me to `get in the house' before
I would finally make the trek back inside. then
there were the days that if we were REALLY lucky
my mom would take us to the park and we would
swing, climb and terrorize the playground.
Do kids still do that? Will they have memories of
swings, playgrounds and road hockey games? As I
drove home the other day, those thoughts crossed
my mind and my curiosity took over. I took a route
home that passes by a park with a playground. It
was empty. On a beautiful sunny saturday. Where
were all the kids?
studies have shown that most kids spend an
average of 6 hours after school doing non-active
things like watching tV or playing computers and
video games. I'm not going to start pointing the
finger at television , ipads or internet for the desertion
of the playgrounds but what else could have
changed in the last 20 years that has caused such
a drastic abandonment of activity?
As much as we are told that being active is beneficial for
children, how many parents set an example for their kids
and truly realize the benefits? Many parents sign their
kids up for programs. However, they often fail to recognize
the connection that what they model, through their
actions and attitudes towards exercise, impacts their
children more than anything else. Parents have to be involved
and the best way to get children to be active and
inspire a love of sport is by starting within the family.
As the number of children in organized sport continues
to fall and the rate of obesity continues to climb, parents
need to instill a love of sport in their child at an early
age. Developing a child' s love for sport gives them more
than just something to do. sport encourages a healthy
lifestyle, promotes positive body image and countless
skills and values they cannot learn anywhere else.
Give Your Child A Head start
Children that get involved in sport earlier in life are more
likely to continue being active throughout life. According
to research, children at age 10 that are physically active
on a consistent basis for an hour a day are 75% less
likely to become overweight as adults. Fostering a love
of sport at a young age is obviously beneficial to living a
healthy life. However, there are many other assets that
sport can provide that are often overlooked.
14 richmondoval.ca | 778.296.1400

In addition to teaching kids physical literacy, children
who play sports and are active:
•Exhibit higher self esteem, self confidence, a
more positive body image and a greater sense of
belonging.
•Learn how to work with and get along with peers
and how to have positive interactions with coaches
and other adults
•Learn how to deal with conflict by providing an
environment where they can learn how to handle
disappointment, competition, frustration and anger
in a respectful manner.
•Are more likely to experience academic success
and graduate from high school
•Experience less stress and more sleep
•Are less likely to end up doing drugs during high
school and university
•Are more likely to be disciplined, determined and
driven
•Learn how to think strategically and read non
verbal clues
these skills are generally carried on through childhood
into university and eventually into the workplace.
Although academics are important, even Ivy League
universities understand the impact of sport. the result,
athletes have a greater chance of being admitted
into an Ivy League university than non-athletes. the
advantages don' t stop at university. In a recent study,
athletes were found to be hired more often because
they possessed the `soft skills' that their competition
lacked. soft skills are the cluster of personality traits,
social graces, communication, language, personal
habits, friendliness, and optimism that characterize
relationships with other people. Athletes were also
found to make more money and secure higher ranking
positions in the workplace. It should be clarified that
the term athlete is used for people who participate in
sports regardless of the level.
Although the health benefits alone should be enough
to convince any parent to invest in their child, sport
really can give your child the best chance at success
later in life. From the initial development of a child' s
emotional and cognitive maturity to the lifelong
lessons learned to success in the workplace, I truly
believe that a parent can give their child no greater
gift than a passion for sports.
Melanie Jue was a rare mult-sport Division 1 athlete
at Cornell University where she trained for four years
under Cornell' s varsity strength and conditioning
programs. She is currently coaching and instructing
young athletes.
