Program<br />
• ANSC places <strong>Alaska</strong><br />
<strong>Native</strong> college students in<br />
areas of science and<br />
research.<br />
• Interns work with <strong>Native</strong><br />
organizations and<br />
researchers in a variety<br />
of projects such as<br />
contaminants, biology,<br />
subsistence, cultural and<br />
social issues, and<br />
education.
Traditional Food Safety Program<br />
• This program<br />
establishes<br />
collaboration among<br />
state, federal, <strong>Native</strong>,<br />
and Tribal entities, to<br />
address issues of<br />
environmental<br />
contaminants and<br />
effects on traditional<br />
food and human<br />
health.
Mini-Grant Program<br />
• This program enables<br />
tribes in <strong>Alaska</strong> to identify<br />
and address their<br />
environmental concerns<br />
through communitybased/driven<br />
research.<br />
• Issues being addressed<br />
include fish, animal and<br />
plant testing (contaminant<br />
& pathology), burn<br />
barrels, traditional<br />
knowledge, sanitation,<br />
beaver, site testing.
<strong>Alaska</strong> Traditional Diet Project<br />
• In partnership with<br />
<strong>Alaska</strong> <strong>Native</strong> Health<br />
Board, a food survey<br />
was conducted in 14<br />
communities.<br />
• ANSC is coordinating<br />
food sampling and<br />
testing for 2 villages<br />
and training of local<br />
samplers.
