What is HHW?
• Listed Wastes
• Characteristic Wastes
• Universal Wastes
• Mixed Wastes
Listed Wastes
• Wastes that EPA has determined are
hazardous. The lists include the F-list
(wastes from common manufacturing and
industrial processes), K-list (wastes from
specific industries), and P- and U-lists
(wastes from commercial chemical
products).
Examples of Listed Wastes
• F-Listed Wastes
– Solvents used for
degreasing
– Metal treatment
– WWTP
• K-Listed Wastes
– Wood preservation
– Iron and steel
production
• P-Listed Wastes
– Aldrin
– Calcium
– Cyanide
• U-Listed Wastes
– Acetone
– Benzene
– Lead acetate
Characteristic Wastes
• Wastes that do not meet any of the listed
wastes criteria, but that exhibit ignitability,
corrosivity, reactivity, or toxicity.
• Examples:
• Laquer thiner
• Mineral spirits
• Oil based paint
Universal Wastes
• Batteries, pesticides, mercury-containing
equipment (e.g., thermostats) and lamps
(e.g., fluorescent bulbs).
Mixed Wastes
• Waste that contains both radioactive and
hazardous waste components.
• Examples:
– Organic compounds
– Mercury contaminated with radioactive
materials
