What is <strong>HHW</strong>?<br />

• Listed <strong>Waste</strong>s<br />

• Characteristic <strong>Waste</strong>s<br />

• Universal <strong>Waste</strong>s<br />

• Mixed <strong>Waste</strong>s


Listed <strong>Waste</strong>s<br />

• <strong>Waste</strong>s that EPA has determined are<br />

hazardous. <strong>The</strong> lists include the F-list<br />

(wastes from common manufacturing and<br />

industrial processes), K-list (wastes from<br />

specific industries), and P- and U-lists<br />

(wastes from commercial chemical<br />

products).


Examples of Listed <strong>Waste</strong>s<br />

• F-Listed <strong>Waste</strong>s<br />

– Solvents used for<br />

degreasing<br />

– Metal treatment<br />

– WWTP<br />

• K-Listed <strong>Waste</strong>s<br />

– Wood preservation<br />

– Iron and steel<br />

production<br />

• P-Listed <strong>Waste</strong>s<br />

– Aldrin<br />

– Calcium<br />

– Cyanide<br />

• U-Listed <strong>Waste</strong>s<br />

– Acetone<br />

– Benzene<br />

– Lead acetate


Characteristic <strong>Waste</strong>s<br />

• <strong>Waste</strong>s that do not meet any of the listed<br />

wastes criteria, but that exhibit ignitability,<br />

corrosivity, reactivity, or toxicity.<br />

• Examples:<br />

• Laquer thiner<br />

• Mineral spirits<br />

• Oil based paint


Universal <strong>Waste</strong>s<br />

• Batteries, pesticides, mercury-containing<br />

equipment (e.g., thermostats) and lamps<br />

(e.g., fluorescent bulbs).


Mixed <strong>Waste</strong>s<br />

• <strong>Waste</strong> that contains both radioactive and<br />

hazardous waste components.<br />

• Examples:<br />

– Organic compounds<br />

– Mercury contaminated with radioactive<br />

materials
