The 2013 version of the Fiat Club
Waikato Tarmac Series Autocross
attracted 48 competitors to the
Hampton Downs Skid pan.
While the formalities of documentation and scrutineering
were going on, a diabolical course was being set up to
give all sorts of vehicles an advantage at some part of
the course.
Overnight rain had left the surface slick so everyone
had an opportunity to get their eye in during practice -
unfortunately almost a quarter of the field omitted to go
the correct way so their eye calibration was a little off.
Added to that there appeared to be one of the entered
cars missing, no one had seen the Stevens Porsche 944.
More of that later.
Run 1 took place on a drying track, with still sufficient
water around to make handling tricky to say the least.
It appeared as if low power was again going to be
the winner. But the sun had appeared and was intent
on staying around. During the progress of Run 1 the
Porsche turned up, the Stevens boys had been back to
Hamilton to get the steering wheel. True story! I really like
that my steering wheel has a nut between it and this nut.
As the day wore on the track dried completely and from
runs in the 50 second range a number of drivers dipped
into the 30s towards the end of the day.
As for the autocross, Christo Strydom in his smokey
Toyota MR2 took the day with a best of 35.80 seconds,
wrapping up Class B as well. His son JJ in the same car
was first Junior, ad second overall.
David Middlemiss won Class A, and despite what the
result sheet says, he borrowed Mum’s Mini to do this,
finishing 9th.
Class C was taken out by Heath Simone in his Peugeot
205GTI, with Heath finishing fourth overall.
