Hi again and welcome to <strong>July</strong>.<br />
Some of you may have noticed that the <strong>Hamilton</strong><br />
<strong>Car</strong> <strong>Club</strong> website is under renovation. This is<br />
thanks to Brent Shaw who is using his skills to<br />
create the makeover. Brent is also looking for some<br />
high quality photos of club member’s cars in action,<br />
so if you would like to put your photos forward then<br />
please contact Brent at brent@kiwimotoring.com.<br />
While the club has not run any events in the last<br />
month, a lot of members have been busy competing<br />
in events that are part of our club points run by<br />
other clubs. The next club run event is the Dual<br />
Sprints on the 18th August at Hampton Downs.<br />
This event is being run with the MBOP car club so<br />
should make for great competition.<br />

It is interesting to read the problems that car clubs are having with various district councils regarding road<br />
closures and roading damage bills. With some councils considering a blanket ban on all motorsport road<br />
closures, and others having road closure seasons and allowing preference toward other clubs. This makes me<br />
wonder how safe the futures of events run on public roads really are.<br />
This will not just affect rallying but events such as hillclimbs and sprint events as well. What may happen is<br />
that all events will need to be held on private property, and with forestry being less available this will push more<br />
events to be held at race tracks or purpose built motorsport parks. This will also have an impact on the cost of<br />
running events as parks will seek a return on their investment.<br />
I consider myself fortunate to have had the last 34 years competing in what could be the best years of<br />
motorsport events in this country.<br />

Hampton Downs Dual Sprints<br />
<strong>Hamilton</strong> <strong>Car</strong> <strong>Club</strong> and Motorsport Bay of Plenty are planning to run a round of dual sprints at Hampton Downs<br />
on Sunday the 18th of August <strong>2013</strong>.<br />
I need 4 flag marshals and one assistant Clerk of the Course. It has been suggested that we have two people on<br />
each flag point so if you and a mate are keen to come up to Hampton Downs for the day and watch some great<br />
racing, please let me know by emailing sandi@raglan.co.nz.<br />

Fire extinguisher mounting<br />
Please note that an important amendent to<br />
the motorsport manual has taken place from<br />
January <strong>2013</strong>:<br />
Mounting / Location: Extinguishers shall be installed<br />
in accordance with the following:<br />
(a) For hand-held extinguishers, a metal retaining<br />
system incorporating a quick release metal strap/s<br />
shall be fitted (a minimum of two(2) metal straps<br />
shall be required from 1 January <strong>2013</strong>), secured to<br />
the structure of the vehicle by a minimum of two(2)<br />
self locking threaded metal fasteners (bolts) with<br />
panel washers. All hand-held extinguishers shall be<br />
positioned within easy reach of the occupant/s while<br />
in their normally seated position.<br />
(b) For mounted (plumbed in) systems, each storage<br />
cylinder shall be installed with a minimum of two(2)<br />
metal straps and four(4) self locking ISO 8.8 M6<br />
bolts with panel washers or in accordance with the<br />
manufacturers mounting instructions.<br />
The occupant(s) shall be able to trigger the<br />
extinguisher system while in their normally seated<br />
position. For closed vehicles, an external triggering<br />
device located at the base of the windscreen may<br />
also be fitted, and<br />
(c) Extinguishers shall be mounted so the gauge is<br />
visible at all times.<br />

The Fiat <strong>Club</strong> Waikato Tarmac Series is on again for<br />
<strong>2013</strong>, with 2 out of 5 rounds completed already.<br />
The next event is the Sainsbury Road Hillclimb on<br />
Sunday the 11th of August, with an entry fee of just<br />
$80.<br />

Day Licenses<br />
If you need a day license at an event you must<br />
remember that there is now a set of questions that<br />
you need to answer. There are 10 questions and<br />
you need to get at least 8 of them correct. The<br />
Drivers Guide booklet that came out with this year’s<br />
motorsport manual has the answers.<br />

New website<br />
Hi guys, I’m in the process of building our new website, which I started just a few days ago. There have been<br />
some significant modifications, including a change to our hosting and email accounts, as well as new pages,<br />
content and a fresh new look. I’m about 50% of the way through now, and I aim to have the majority of it finished<br />
up over the next week.<br />
This website makeover should make it easier for our existing club members (and potential new ones) to keep<br />
up to date with news, upcoming events and results, etc. It will also be a lot more user-friendly for our committee<br />
members, so they can easily update the website on a regular basis.<br />
The new website is already live and functioning for the most part, although I will be refining things further so it<br />
might change a bit yet. I’ve included a screenshot of the home page as it appears currently as I am putting this<br />
month’s <strong>Bulletin</strong> together (see below).<br />
Your feedback is welcome, and please let me know if you spot any bugs or issues with the site so I can do my<br />
best to eliminate them.<br />

CHAMPIONSHIP ASPIRATIONS ON TRACK – LAWRENCE RULES PUKEKOHE<br />
Last weekend saw the third round of the Winger Suzuki Swift Sport Cup take place at Pukekohe Park Raceway,<br />
and for <strong>Hamilton</strong> racer Shaun Lawrence, it was a prime opportunity to cement his position at the head of the<br />
Championship points table.<br />
Qualifying in second spot for the “mini enduro” race one, just one-tenth of a second off the time set by Josh<br />
Drysdale, Lawrence’s weekend was off to a perfect start as he jetted away and was soon leading from the front.<br />
The field were required to make a compulsory pit stop, Lawrence exiting the pit behind Andrew Vincent who’s<br />
team did an amazingly fast tyre change. With the weather and light rapidly declining, event Stewards made the<br />
call to cancel the race early, putting a premature end to Lawrence’s challenge for first place.<br />
“Initially I was obviously gutted as I felt we had the fastest car out there. Second was still a fantastic result and is<br />
great for our points. The car set up is perfect and I really just want to get stuck in to the two races on Sunday”<br />
said Lawrence post-race.<br />
As always, the Suzuki’s returned to the track for the reverse grid second race which had Lawrence starting from<br />
the back row. By his own admission, Lawrence made a “demon start” leaping four positions before the first turn!<br />
Unfortunately the race was halted before the completion of the first lap thanks to a spectacular rollover by<br />
rookie driver Campbell Christie.<br />
With a full race restart, Lawrence once again made rapid progress through the field before the race was stopped<br />
for a second time, this time with Grant Ryan coming unstuck. The race got away once again and it was going to<br />
be an all out fight for the podium positions. On the final lap Lawrence found himself drafting race one winner<br />
Vincent over the hill, and his desperate lunge for the line was rewarded with a fine third position.<br />
The final race of the weekend had the Liquorland Racing Suzuki starting off the front row once again, second on<br />
aggregate points over the first two races. After taking the race lead through turn one, Lawrence consolidated his<br />
lead with a bold outside line through the new section of the track, and from there he simply drove away from<br />
the field to take a comfortable race victory.<br />
“I watched the V8 Supercars take that line when they were here recently. I figured if they can do it then I can<br />
pull it off in the Swift!” said a smiling Lawrence. “I’m really getting a feel for the new Hankook tyres now, they’re<br />
awesome and the whole weekend has just been fantastic. I’m absolutely stoked” he added.<br />
Lawrence’s outstanding results saw him claim the overall round win, the teams second in the first three rounds.<br />
More importantly however, his goal to increase his overall points lead was also achieved and it’s a confident<br />
Liquorland Racing team that will head into the second half of the series after a mid-winter break.<br />
The final three rounds are all at circuits Lawrence already has proven results on, being Taupo, Hampton Downs,<br />
and a return to Pukekohe. All things considered, this could well be Lawrence’s year….. Watch this space!<br />

The <strong>2013</strong> version of the Fiat <strong>Club</strong><br />
Waikato Tarmac Series Autocross<br />
attracted 48 competitors to the<br />
Hampton Downs Skid pan.<br />
While the formalities of documentation and scrutineering<br />
were going on, a diabolical course was being set up to<br />
give all sorts of vehicles an advantage at some part of<br />
the course.<br />
Overnight rain had left the surface slick so everyone<br />
had an opportunity to get their eye in during practice -<br />
unfortunately almost a quarter of the field omitted to go<br />
the correct way so their eye calibration was a little off.<br />
Added to that there appeared to be one of the entered<br />
cars missing, no one had seen the Stevens Porsche 944.<br />
More of that later.<br />
Run 1 took place on a drying track, with still sufficient<br />
water around to make handling tricky to say the least.<br />
It appeared as if low power was again going to be<br />
the winner. But the sun had appeared and was intent<br />
on staying around. During the progress of Run 1 the<br />
Porsche turned up, the Stevens boys had been back to<br />
<strong>Hamilton</strong> to get the steering wheel. True story! I really like<br />
that my steering wheel has a nut between it and this nut.<br />
As the day wore on the track dried completely and from<br />
runs in the 50 second range a number of drivers dipped<br />
into the 30s towards the end of the day.<br />
As for the autocross, Christo Strydom in his smokey<br />
Toyota MR2 took the day with a best of 35.80 seconds,<br />
wrapping up Class B as well. His son JJ in the same car<br />
was first Junior, ad second overall.<br />
David Middlemiss won Class A, and despite what the<br />
result sheet says, he borrowed Mum’s Mini to do this,<br />
finishing 9th.<br />
Class C was taken out by Heath Simone in his Peugeot<br />
205GTI, with Heath finishing fourth overall.<br />

Class D for large engines was won by Scott McIntosh in<br />
his Fiat 128 Turbo, 12th overall but with a rattly bottom<br />
end unfortunately. This car is a great example of what<br />
Kiwis do, a Fiat Uno Turbo engine transplanted into a car<br />
that was never designed to have it. It really is a beauty<br />
Scott.<br />
We were treated to a number of interesting vehicles with<br />
a Ford Fairmont station wagon being manhandled around<br />
all day, Ross Webster was back playing in his bright<br />
yellow Renault Dauphine that rivalled the MR2 for smoke,<br />
but was way more spectacular lifting the inside front<br />
wheel into the air on demand.<br />
We had two competitors running in one of the more<br />
interesting sounding RX7s that you will hear, the 3.8 litre<br />
Holden V6 is as distinctly different from a rotary as you<br />
can get I think.<br />

pursue claims against and (severally) to hold harmless, indemnify and keep indemnified MotorSport New Zealand Inc, its members,<br />
associated or affiliated clubs and entities, <strong>Club</strong>Sport and/or event organisers and promoters, the inviting club and entity (or entities), race<br />
circuit owners, providers and operators, owners and tenants of private property (including land, buildings and/or fixtures, fittings and<br />
chattels) traversed, or proximate to events, officials, fellow competitors, and the directors, officers, servants, representatives and agents of<br />
those entities (all together “the Indemnified Parties”) in relation to all losses, actions, expenses, costs, liabilities, claims and demands in<br />
respect of death, injury, loss or damage to persons or property of myself, and/or my team (including drivers, co-drivers, passengers,<br />
management and/or mechanics) whatsoever, caused or arising out of or in connection with this entry or taking part in the events to which<br />
this entry relates, notwithstanding that such death, injury, loss or damage may have been contributed to or caused by the negligence of any<br />
of the Indemnified Parties and/or by any other person. This provision confers a benefit on, and is intended to be enforceable by, each of the<br />
Indemnified Parties (in accordance with the Contracts (Privity) Act 1982).<br />
