<strong>STUDENT</strong> <strong>ACTIVITIES</strong><br />

THE ALEXINE (Yearbook) <strong>Nazareth</strong> makes history and the Alexine records it. Pulling the year<br />

together and focusing on the important events are some goals the staff sets out to accomplish.<br />

Whether through copy or photos, those events in <strong>Nazareth</strong>'s history are recorded in a way to<br />

help students recall special moments, whether it be next year or ten years from now. Work<br />

sessions are held after school. Staff positions are open to anyone willing to write, copy, caption<br />

or take photos. Moderator: Ms. Biga K 204<br />

THE ANNOUNCER (Newspaper) <strong>Nazareth</strong>’s student news publication, The Announcer is<br />

published on-line four times per year. News, in and around <strong>Nazareth</strong> will be posted for<br />

students, parents, and alumni to read. Anyone interested in newspaper reporting (journalism,<br />

photography, or newspaper editing) may join the staff. Meetings take place twice a month for<br />

the planning and layout of each issue. Moderator: Ms. Radogno K211<br />

ART CLUB <strong>Nazareth</strong>’s Art Club is a dynamic, creative and super-fun organization. Students<br />

will have the chance to experience art in many forms by attending one of the field trips<br />

organized for members throughout the school year. This is a wonderful opportunity for<br />

students to meet others interested in art. This club is open to all <strong>Nazareth</strong> students.<br />

ASTRONOMY CLUB One of <strong>Nazareth</strong>’s newest clubs, members of the Astronomy Club meet<br />

to share their interests and ideas about simple astronomy ideas. This club is not intended to be<br />

a rigorous scientific study. The club will meet once a month. Moderator: Ms. Bell K206<br />

CLASS BOARDS With the goal of making the year unique for their classmates, board<br />

members plan special events, dances and charity events throughout the year. Members are the<br />

leaders in the school and the voice of their class. Interested students can run for executive<br />

positions or class representative. Class Boards meet after school on Tuesdays.<br />

Freshman/Sophomore Board work together to make these two years exciting and memorable<br />

for their classmates by planning several events. Students will take part in fundraising,<br />

coordinating community service projects and planning the Freshman-Sophomore class event.<br />

Junior Board plans several special events throughout the year. The Board works hard to make<br />

Junior Ring Night and Prom successful and memorable. Moderator: Ms. Paliatka K 210<br />

Senior Board helps to organize many events throughout the year. Some of these activities are<br />

Powder Puff Football, Dodgeball, the annual Car Wash, and Prom. Moderator: Ms. Augustyn<br />

CHESS CLUB This organization allows students to play the game while<br />

teaching good sportsmanship and emphasizing thinking skills. Members of<br />

the club may travel to other schools to teach and/or play the game with other<br />

students. The Chess Club meets on Fridays after school.<br />

DRAMA Each year the <strong>Nazareth</strong> Drama Department celebrates the gifts of<br />

theatre through a fall production and a spring musical. There are several<br />

ways to share your talents on and off the stage. Try out dates and sign up<br />

times are announced throughout the year. Rehearsals are held three to four<br />

evenings a week. All <strong>Nazareth</strong> students are invited to join. Director: Mrs.<br />

ENVIRONMENTAL ADVOCATES This organization devotes their time to<br />

raising environmental awareness in the <strong>Nazareth</strong> community. Their efforts<br />

center around recycling paper and plastics as well as determining where<br />

and how <strong>Nazareth</strong> might be a “greener” community. Activities and events<br />

are planned to promote education and awareness of our planet earth.<br />

The club meets after school twice a month.<br />

F.I.S.H. Friends In Service & Hospitality FISH is a program designed to give <strong>Nazareth</strong> students<br />

an opportunity to engage with developmentally disabled adults and teens in their community.<br />

Together, the <strong>Nazareth</strong> students and the disable participants work on creative service projects<br />

for the betterment of their community and beyond.<br />

HEALTH CAREERS CLUB The Health Careers club is a student-led group designed to bring<br />

students together who are interested in pursuing future health care careers such as medicine,<br />

nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, lab technology, physical/occupational therapy, radiology<br />

and others. The students will choose activities, speakers, filed trips, hands-on training in order<br />

to explore various health professions. Moderator: Mrs. Emmett K304<br />

HODGKINS TUTORING <strong>Nazareth</strong> students travel via van to Hodgkins School in Hodgkins to<br />

assist students with their homework. Tutoring is held on Tuesdays from 3:15 - 4:15 p.m.<br />

Students may be needed anywhere from once a month to every week depending on student<br />

interest. Moderator: Mrs. Caragher - Campus Ministry<br />

JUST US is <strong>Nazareth</strong>’s student Peace and Justice organization. Inspired by the Congregation<br />

of St. Joseph’s commitment to creating a global neighborhood, an interdependent society where<br />

love and compassion form the basis of relationships and action, this group explores social<br />

issues such as the death penalty, immigration, poverty, and the environment. All <strong>Nazareth</strong><br />

students are welcome to join. Co-moderators: Sr. Mary Jo Curtsinger M305 and Mrs.<br />

DePasquale K306<br />

MATH CLUB Members of the Math Club participate in various math contests<br />

throughout the year and work at becoming better problem solvers and creative<br />

thinkers. Math Club meets on Thursdays before and after school twice a<br />

MODEL UN Student members of Model UN step into the shoes of ambassadors from UN<br />

member states to debate current issues. Students make speeches, prepare draft resolutions,<br />

negotiate with allies and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and much more. This club fosters<br />

interest in mobilizing “international cooperation” to resolve problems that affect countries all<br />

over the world. All <strong>Nazareth</strong> students are invited to join. Moderator: Mr. Jurasas M205<br />

NATIONAL ENGLISH HONOR SOCIETY The goals of NEHS include recognition of students<br />

who excel in their English classes, encouraging students to further develop their interest in the<br />

study of English and to encourage members to use their talents in service of others.<br />

<strong>Nazareth</strong>’s NEHS hosts an annual poetry slam! Students are invited to join during their<br />

sophomore year. Moderator: Ms. Garcia K208<br />

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Members of NHS serve as role models for underclassmen in<br />

the areas of scholarship, service, leadership and character. Once inducted into NHS members<br />

become actively involved in the school's tutoring program, the Blood Drive and various service<br />

endeavors throughout the year. Moderator: Mrs. Martin M307<br />

NAZARETH OPERATION SNOWBALL Snowball is a program run by students for students.<br />

Snowball is a two-day conference that gives you an overnight away with friends and a chance<br />

to learn about ways to be healthier and make better choices. It is founded on the belief that if<br />

you give students accurate information and tools to manage their lives, they will make good<br />

decisions. There are small and large group presentations, small group discussions,<br />

opportunities to just hang-out and a chance to relax and get away. Moderator: Mrs. Kokontis<br />

PEACEBUILDERS OUTREACH Peacebuilders is an organization that is dedicated to serving<br />

the community. Peacebuilder members volunteer for service projects throughout the year.<br />

Peacebuilders allows students to interact with many people and volunteer in their<br />

homes. Moderator: Mrs. Caragher - Campus Ministry<br />

ROADRUNNER CLUB Members of the Roadrunner Club serve as<br />

ambassadors of the school by representing the Christian values of <strong>Nazareth</strong> at<br />

various functions such as recruiting events and other programs where students are placed in a<br />

visible role. Interested juniors and seniors may apply at the beginning of the school year.<br />

Moderator: Mrs. Kaps - Guidance Office<br />

SCIENCE & ENGINEERING CLUB One of <strong>Nazareth</strong>’s newest and most exciting clubs, NSEC<br />

reaches out to students who have a passion for science. Club members will vote on projects to<br />

create and will spend time after school completing them. All <strong>Nazareth</strong> students are invited to<br />

join. Moderator: Mr. Kesic K305<br />

SMILE SMILE strives to create an atmosphere of friendship and unity between the<br />

communities of <strong>Nazareth</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>, the Sisters of St. Joseph and the residents of Bethlehem<br />

Woods. Events are held every month and service projects are incorporated throughout the year.<br />

All <strong>Nazareth</strong> students are welcome to join. Moderator: Mrs. Montgomery K203<br />

SPANISH CLUB provides another place outside of the classroom to<br />

practice using the Spanish language. As a member of the club<br />

students will participate in hands on activities, crafts and games.<br />

Spanish Club meets on Thursdays after school twice a month.<br />

<strong>STUDENT</strong> COUNCIL Student participation extends beyond each class level when a student<br />

becomes a member of the Student Council. Members experience the joy of working together on<br />

community projects and dances. Student Council’s main objective is to make <strong>Nazareth</strong><br />

<strong>Academy</strong> a better working and caring community. Interested students can begin as a<br />

representative and work their way into an executive position. Meetings are held after school on<br />

Tuesdays. Moderator: Mrs. Gurney – Guidance Office<br />

YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS Formerly known as Economics Club, the Young Entrepreneurs<br />

organization will work with members of the <strong>Nazareth</strong> community to help market, fundraise and<br />

advertise upcoming events. It is a business preparatory club that will introduce students to<br />

resume writing, interview skills, networking and proper business practice.<br />

YOUTH INITIATIVE The Youth Initiative aims to make school a better place for students. Youth<br />

Initiative also provides many opportunities to try new experiences that will be useful in the<br />

future. The school team, consisting of students and staff, meet to discuss concerns and work<br />

together to improve <strong>Nazareth</strong>. Students that are part of Youth Initiative conduct Focus Groups<br />

and are responsible for: Freshman Orientation, Red Ribbon Week, Snowball and other activities<br />

throughout the <strong>Nazareth</strong> community. The school team meets once a month and additional<br />

meetings are scheduled for planning and implementing the activities.<br />
